One summer and one secret, a childhood that never comes back.
Anthony and his mother Mary and his father Francis arrive on a remote island for summer vacation
in a rented cottage. The atmosphere is peaceful, warm days, lakeside views and a promise of freedom
from school and routines. They quickly discovers their neighbors are Genevieve and her daughter
Anna. Genevieve happens to be an old friend of Francis from his university days which create
a certain tension in the background. Anthony first notices Anna directly who is 17 years old
through small details that catches his attention. When he finally sees her, he watches from a
distance rather than approaching. This established Anthony's role has an observer, someone who
observes experience quietly rather than participating openly. When Anthony and Anna
speaks for the first time, Anna acknowledged that she has noticed him watching her.
Anthony offers no explanation. Anna reacts calmly even casually. It becomes clear that she is older
and more confident preparing to begin university soon. The difference is age and experience
shapers their interaction and places Anthony in a position of an emotional vulnerability.
And the two families spend time together including sharing meals. Anna appears polite,
confident and socially skilled. Anthony observes closely as his father shows a particular interest
in Genevieve, engaging her enthusiastically. Anthony's mother Maria notices this behavior
but does not openly respond. Anthony senses tension beneath the surface. This moment
quickly introduced him to the idea that the adults does not always act consistently with the role
they present. And one evening, Anthony tells his mother that Anna has invited him to watch
movie at her cabin. When he arrives, Genevieve is absent. Anna is with her two older teen boys.
Anthony stays but he remains mostly silent and observant. The other two teenagers behave
casually and freely, exposing Anthony to social behavior he does not fully understand.
Anna appears comfortable with them, treating Anthony as a present but not visible. Later,
the group goes to the lake. Anthony follows along, watching rather than engaging. He returns home
early the next morning. At home, his mother Maria reacts with concern and frustration over
his absence. His father responds more casually, treating the situation as a normal part of growing
up. Anthony does not explain what he experienced. Following this night, Anthony has a little
interaction with Anna for some days. The film shows Anthony engage in routine activities
such as studying and wandering the island. Anna later reappears during a loud argument
with her boyfriend near Anthony's cabin. Anthony watches from a distance.
Genevieve then asks Anthony's father to help her to raise a play for an audition. He agrees and
then spends time together privately. Though it appears ordinary, Anthony notices the increased
closeness. Then Anthony's parents agree to take Anna to town and his mother insists that Anthony
stay behind. Anthony watches his parents and Anna leave together for the day, and when they return,
they appear relaxed and familiar. Anthony notices this change but does not give an explanation.
The next day, Anthony sees Anna leaving her cabin dressed carefully. Curious,
he follows her quietly. Anna walks deep into the woods. Anthony briefly loses sight of her
but hears the voices. One voice is Anna's and the other belongs to his father.
From a hidden position, Anthony witnesses a secret, an inappropriate encounter between his father
and Anna. Although the details are not explicit, it is clear that boundaries have been crossed.
This moment becomes the defining turning point of the film. Anthony does not interrupt or reveal
himself. He simply watches, understanding that what he has seen can't be undone. After the
discovery, Anthony remains silent. He does not comfort his father or speak to his mother.
His behavior becomes more withdrawn. Soon after, both families share another meal.
During conversation, Anthony's mother Maria openly expresses her affection for her husband,
and his father reassures her. Anna reacts strongly and leaves the table.
Anthony follows shortly after. The adults are confused and unaware of the real reason behind
their reaction. Anthony's silence now carries weight. He possesses the knowledge that
fundamentally changes his view of his parents and adult world. Later, Anthony overhears his
father speaking privately with Anna, ending their secret involvement. Anna is clearly distressed.
That same night, Anna comforts Anthony's father at the cabin. The confrontation becomes loud
and tense. Anthony watches from a distance as the situation escalates. When Anthony's mother
arrives, the father manages to calm the situation and conceal the truth. As the father returns to
the house, he notices Anthony's watching. For a brief moment, his expression reveals fear over
concern. Later, the father speaks privately with Anthony, describing Anna as emotionally unstable
and implying that her behavior caused the conflicts. Anthony listens but does not reveal
what he knows. And that's all about this movie's review.
