Today, I'm tasting two iconic brands of champagne: Moët & Chandon and Taittinger. These two houses have a long and rich history, they are both known for producing high-quality, elegant champagnes, Taittinger is supposedly a little finer, but which one is actually best, which one should you buy?

08:20 - Is Taittinger the Best Champagne?

Moët & Chandon and Taittinger are both extremely iconic and popular champagnes. In fact, they are 2 of the three OLDEST of all Champagne houses, so the most established brands. Moët & Chandon is the 3d oldest brand, founded in 1743 by Jean-Baptiste Moët, while Taittinger is the 2d oldest, founded in 1734 by Pierre Taittinger. Which is the oldest Champagne house you may be wondering, well it’s Ruinart and I tasted it here if you want to learn more about it.
Moët, and yes that’s how you pronounce it, not MOEH is the largest champagne house in the world, believed to be producing somewhere around 200 million bottles of champagne each year. It’s the staple name everyone knows, and a bit of a reference point when it comes to quality and taste, not always the best Champagne or the best value, MORE ON THAT IN A MOMENT, but VERY solid and extremely consistent.
Taittinger on the other hand is renowned for its elegant and refined style of Champagne, characterized by a high proportion of Chardonnay grapes. This emphasis on Chardonnay contributes to the house's signature lightness, finesse, and freshness. Their champagnes often exhibit crisp and clean palate with a distinctive minerality, that’s on paper. In practice, let’s see how they compare in terms of style and taste. Taittinger is one of the very few top Champagnes that is not owned by LVMH or Louis Vuitton enormous luxury group, but more of a large family-owned operation. Oh and fun fact, Moet has often been the sponsor for the US and French Tennis Open, also the ATP World Tour, so it seems to go better with Tennis and Golf, while Taittinger is associated with the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix...
