In this special edition of Today Rewind, we’re looking back to the year 2012, when global superstar Taylor Swift took over the show, performing her biggest hits live for a massive crowd of screaming Swifties.
Taylor Swift is on the way folks.
He's off his moustache at this point.
Yeah, it's magnificent.
Ladies from right around the country
like Gemma and her mum Jenny
who've come up from Ballarat.
Now she's not sure what she actually
wrote in her entry in 25 words
or less because she entered so many times
she's not sure which one actually won but
she is a big fan and as you can see
lots of young girls with an average age
of about 13 years.
Hundreds of young ladies queued up here
at Channel 9 this morning including
Nikita and her mum who've even made up
their own Taylor Swift t-shirts
and they've brought one for Carl as well.
That's going to look hot on you Carl.
Let's have a look at the weather and see what's up.
We like a low v-neck on you Carl.
Coming in at number one on the most clicked
it's Taylor Swift day. We're getting very excited
so we thought we'd start most clicked
with some very adorable clips of Taylor
and her cat Meredith.
So like we got nominated for
Entertainer of the Year which is
huge and
wonderful
and the thing about
the ACMs is that it's
fan voted.
This is a weird position
I'm just going to tell you.
It's not lady like. It's not even
cat like.
She's comfortable isn't she?
What happened to that cat's ears?
She's a very cute cat.
I think they're in braids.
Just put them back.
Who are at the front of the line
for Taylor Swift girls. Tell us how
long have you been here? Since 10pm.
Since 10pm last night. So you actually
slept here? Yeah we slept right here.
Right here on the sidewalk. Tell us
what it was like? They were like
uncomfortable. There were like bugs in our hair
and like all over our faces
and yeah it was just gross.
So why do you love Taylor Swift so much?
She's the best.
So what did you do for food?
That.
A nice healthy
dinner down there Carl and Lisa.
These girls are very keen.
They've been here right throughout the night.
They're pretty happy. There's a group of 6 of them
all up but one of the girls is supposed to be at work today
so she won't appear on camera.
We'll get these girls back at the head of the line
and we'll get you into the studio in around about
half an hours
time to get in there. You getting excited?
Taylor Swift coming up.
Number one fan.
That looked like a very nutritional
dinner to me.
Number of food groups involved there.
The kettle chip sea salt edition.
You've got your salt food group and you've got your potato
starchy food group. There's two
right there. Puts some fire in the belly doesn't it?
Good morning again. Well it's the
day we've been waiting for as we prepare
to welcome one of the world's biggest stars
here into our studio. But before
Taylor Swift steps on stage
let's take a look back at the spectacular
career of Miss Taylor Swift.
She's the country cutie who took on the
world at the age of 15.
The success of her debut album
launching her as a major
country music star.
Our song making her the youngest
person ever to write and record
a number one country hit.
But that was just the start of it.
When the follow up Fearless
was released the love story with
the world was in full bloom.
And when it came
to explaining her popularity
she had all the right answers.
There's a lot of talk about this whole
crossover thing from country to pop.
I like to use the word spillover
because crossover
to me just seems like you're leaving one place
and going to another and
I just don't think that that's what I'm doing.
I have no intention of
leaving country to go over to pop.
Everybody get mad.
You know it's really more about
me singing country music
and pop radio stations
being nice enough to play it.
Fearless was the biggest
selling album of 2009
and the awards followed.
Taylor Swift became the youngest
ever person to win the Grammy
for album of the year.
I just feel like I'm standing here
accepting an impossible dream right now
and I just thank you so much for that.
She was accepting awards everywhere
occasionally under
somewhat bizarre circumstances.
But Beyonce had one of the best
videos of all time.
What a moment that was.
Then came Speak Now.
A million units sold
in the first week and the next
year spent touring the world.
She's also an actress of course.
CSI. Valentine's Day.
The Lorax.
But it's the music that's made her a superstar.
She's sung for presidents.
Performed with legends.
She's Billboard's
Woman of the Year.
The reigning artist of the year.
And now Taylor's back
with her fourth album Red.
Again a number one
smash.
And it all just keeps
getting bigger as Taylor
travels the world promoting the album
and picking up another
batch of awards.
Taylor Swift is built to success
on catchy songs.
Melodies that just won't
leave your head and lyrics that
touch the heart and echo
the emotions of her fans.
In fact it's been said her words
could have been ripped from a
suburban girl's diary.
Oh what a catchy song
that is. Taylor Swift performing here
on the Today Show very very soon.
It is a great morning. We're very excited.
We've got some excited people outside who are
going to be joining us here in the studio soon.
And don't forget Taylor's new album Red
is out now. And she'll also be
performing at the ARIA Awards on Thursday
night. There are some tickets still available
and of course you can watch the ARIAs on
go from 7.30pm.
So there we are. We're in full Taylor Swift
mode. We are good to go aren't we?
Red hot. Good stuff Dickie. When does she get up on
stage Dickie? She gets on
in the next little bit. The next little bit. Stay tuned.
Not too soon. The stage looks pretty good
as well doesn't it? Yeah the stage looks great.
All good. Thank you Dickie. Good morning
to you Carlos. We're outside the studio at Channel 9
with some very exciting
1, 2, 3
Big trouble coming to the studio.
We've got 300 people in the car park
of Canon. Some of them have been
sleeping here since 10 o'clock last
night. We've finally made our way
into the studio. I've been in charge
of security this morning. Not doing a great job
but ladies and gentlemen let's slowly make
our way towards the studio door.
Have a look at the excitement on these
girls faces. They really
are keen to get right inside
this door and see Taylor
Swift. That'll be happening in just a moment.
It is time. Look at the faces.
Look at the screams. These young
girls have been here since 10 o'clock
camped out. They'll be the first inside
the studio to see Taylor
Swift. Are we ready? Good luck
Carl and Lisa. Here they come.
No pushing. Take it easy
Slowly everyone. Walking easy.
Take it easy.
Alright.
We are in. It's like the DJ's
Boxing Day sales.
Even more frantic.
Smart kids. Smart boy there.
Smart young man.
Alright next up some more entertainment
with Richard Wilkins. Very exciting.
Very exciting Carl. We're seeing red today
of course up next. We're going to set the
scene and chart the rise and rise
of Taylor Swift.
We are in control
of this crowd. Everything
They're just
holding on. There's always one.
They're just holding on aren't they Stevie?
That was me squealing.
Very excited. This is the
mosh pit for Taylor Swift. Now Taylor
she's just on the other side
of that wall in there in the dressing room. She's
probably watching the monitor right now. So
Becky what would you like to say to Taylor right down the lens
of the camera? Hi Taylor. You're really
amazing and your songs are
beautiful so thank you so much for them. We
love you lots. Oh there we go.
We are front
and centre and the exciting news
Taylor Swift's on her way.
What Stevie's
trying to do there is steal our thunder.
That's our line.
Taylor Swift is on the way folks.
There she comes.
Thank you. It's amazing to
be back in Sydney. This is incredible.
Take your eyes off his moustache at this
point. It's
magnificent.
I really wanted to shave it
off but this Movember thing we've got to go through
with this. And you painted it red. I painted it red for your
album. It's a match. In honour.
In honour of your wonderful album.
Congratulations on the success of the
album. Thank you so much.
Last time we spoke to you on the show it was
just coming out. You were kind of apprehensive
I hope it goes well. Bang
through the roof. That must be
crazy, exciting, a relief.
All sorts of things. Absolutely.
It's all because of the fans. They're the ones who went
out and bought all those copies.
I'm really hit a note though with the song
Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together.
For any girl who's ever been in a rebound
relationship and for those who never have
they're keeping it in their back pocket because
it really is an anthem now. Thank you.
It's crazy.
It's just kind of, I think that
people can just remember the
chorus and it kind of gets stuck in your head.
If you've ever been in one of those
on and off relationships, it's kind of something
that you can scream at the top of your lungs.
I do
scream it out too. It's not just for the girls.
Don't you reckon?
It's all part of
what you do so beautifully well
and that is articulate
for the generation that follow you
but not just that generation but a whole bunch of generations.
How do you write such a catchy tune
and connect with that audience
like that? Thank you for saying that.
I guess
for me I just
I don't know. I've just been writing about my life
since I was 12. I started
writing songs because when I'd have
a difficult day at school or I'd be going
through a hard time, I'd just tell myself
it's okay, you can write a song about this later
and so I think I trained my brain to
be like, pain? Write a
song about it. Intense feeling?
Write a song about it and I've just been living
like that ever since. So do you find
yourself jotting down lines,
planes, cars, anywhere you are? All the time.
Mid-conversation.
My friends are all used to
me zoning out for a second in conversation
and just getting up and walking
to the other side of the room and singing into my phone
and they're like, oh she's doing it again.
I love you!
I love you too!
What comes with it?
Are you sure she was
talking to you?
I think she was talking to myself.
It's got a life of its own.
What comes with that though
is you are a huge role model now
for young girls and
do you feel that responsibility heavily?
I feel like it's a
part of my life that I shouldn't ignore
and it's interesting because
I'm 22 and at that point in your life
people are like, you're 22!
Go make mistakes! Learn your lessons
the hard way! But in my life
if I make my own
mistakes and learn hard lessons,
that's a news headline.
So you kind of are living halfway
going, okay I have a huge responsibility
to do the right thing and then
the other part of you is like, let's be spontaneous
and live an exciting life. So you just kind of
try to balance the two.
You're a beautiful and very talented woman.
Is it difficult to have a...
Thank you!
Is it difficult to go outside
I don't particularly care to ask you
about your personal situation
but just in general, is it hard
to find a guy to go out with where you have that
privacy in your life?
I don't know, I mean
I don't really focus too much on that
part of it. It's tough when it's like
you have to worry about like
cameras and paparazzi and all that but I mean
I don't know, I just kind of
fall in love with who I fall in love with.
And do you reckon that bloke when he breaks up with you knows that he's going to
cop it in the next album?
It's a good single coming!
It's not like a secret, you know?
It's not like I was really hiding it from everybody
that I write songs about my life.
It's sort of like the main part of my personality
and like who I am so
I guess it's kind of like signing a consent form
really.
What that means for all of the rest of us is
we want you to be happy but in a way
we really don't want you to be happy.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's an interesting one isn't it?
Because like you write most of your songs about
really complex relationships
and people are all like
what happens if you end up in like a simple
relationship where you're just really happy?
Well the best songs come from
tough times, right?
Exactly, they do and that's I think when I need music
the most and then I write songs about going through a tough
time and I think that's kind of when people
need to listen to music the most
so it kind of works out.
Your career is littered with highest ever
first ever, best ever, biggest ever
evers.
Superlatives.
Youngest person ever to win a
Grammy for album of the year, all that stuff.
Of what are you most proud?
I think that's
a huge one
what you just said because that sounds
crazy when you say it.
But I think what I'm most proud of is
the relationship I have with my fans where I feel
like they really understand me
I feel like you guys get
about me and I really love
that. It's like part of
what gets me through when I'm having a really tough
day is I feel like there are a huge amount
of people who get where I'm coming from.
And in terms of your song
Writing, going from
starting at such a young age and now transitioning
as you are through into young
adulthood, does the writing
change and does who you
pitch a song at change as you
get older? I think that as an artist
you try to change just to evolve
for the sake of keeping
things exciting for your fans, keeping things
exciting for you.
So with this album what I wanted to do was challenge
myself by getting in the studio with
people that I love like Ed Sheeran
and Snow Patrol.
That naturally evolves what you do
and kind of blends it with what someone else does
and it essentially just causes this
evolution of sound and I was really proud of
that on the record. As well as huge
album sales, you are
huge on social media. Tell us
about your cat Meredith.
I saw that
this morning and I was so excited
because every time the cat is on TV
I'm just so stoked about it. I don't know why
she has no idea
she's a cat.
She's so
awesome. She just always looks at me like I'm
doing something weird. She's always just
like
judging me all the time.
But she's so great.
She's such a good traveler. I couldn't
bring her to Australia but I bring her basically
everywhere. I know, it's sad.
Quarantine laws.
That's boring.
I'll see her when I go back
to the US but it's crazy how many
hits the videos of her have gotten.
I didn't see that coming at all. You guys
are hilarious for doing that.
We had some of our viewers come in
with some questions. Leanne
Marie Brazier asks, what's the best piece of advice
you've ever been given?
I think that
the people who say really live in
the moment, really appreciate what's happening
to you while it's happening. I think that's
really good advice. And take pictures of
everything. I take a lot of pictures.
You Instagram a lot of stuff. I do.
I was Instagramming from the dressing room
because you guys had this giant bowl of candy
in my dressing room.
It's just amazing.
We wanted you to be impressed.
I was so impressed.
I was like, these people get me.
This is from Melissa,
one of our viewers. She says, your fans know
that you love to bake. So what is your favorite
thing to bake? Right now
it's like fall
winter time in the US.
So I've been baking
a lot of things with cinnamon and nutmeg
and gingerbread stuff
and pumpkin spice stuff.
Have you ever made a lamington?
No, what is that?
What's a lamington?
Has Taylor got a treat?
It's like sponge cake cut in half
with cream in the middle and then chocolate
on the outside and rolled in coconut.
Oh my god. It's incredible. We've got to get you
some lamingtons. That sounds so hard to make.
Can I just get one? No, it's really simple.
We'll get you a good recipe and we'll get you
a finished product as well.
There's one in the Channel 9 Bistro downstairs.
Would someone mind running down and getting a lamington
from the Channel 9 Bistro?
I personally wouldn't eat anything from the Channel 9
Bistro.
What about Tim Tams and
pavlova and all that stuff? Tim Tams, yeah.
We love those.
You guys are killing it with the Tim Tams.
Good response.
Now, when you come back here,
what is it like when you
come back? Do you ever see a relationship
evolving with your fans as they go from
a younger age through to
an older age? There's some
older looking gentlemen.
There's more boys now. It's crazy.
There's a lot of guys whenever
I look out into the audience.
No, it's because you guys
are hot and they know where you're going to be.
Got it all
covered.
Someone else here,
Michael, who's a boy, asks
who's your biggest influence
musically in terms of your vocal sound?
Do you aim for anything
or are you just doing your own thing?
I don't think vocally I have
a vocal role model, but I remember
growing up thinking it was so cool what
Faith Hill, Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks
were doing.
For me, the Dixie Chicks were always
having so much fun and writing their
own songs and playing their own instruments.
That was what I wanted to follow.
Sheryl Crow and people
like that. We loved it when you sang with
Stevie Nicks too. Thank you.
That must have been a buzz.
It was nerve wracking. I was terrified.
She probably said the same about
singing with you. That's sweet.
Do you want to sing a song for us this morning?
Yes! That's an
absolute yes. We're going to take a quick break.
We'll be back with Taylor Swift live on stage.
Showtime as we prepare
to welcome our very special guest
live on stage.
Performing the first single from her
fabulous album Red.
Please give it up for Taylor Swift.
This time
I'm telling Lord screaming that I'm right
and you would hide away and find your peace
of mind with some indie record
that's much cooler than mine.
You called
me up yet tonight
but this time
I'm telling you, I'm telling you we
used to think that we
were forever ever
and I used to say
never say
never
so he calls me up
and he's like I still love you and I'm like
I'm just, I mean this is
exhausting you know like we are never getting
back together
like ever.
You are
watching the Today Show live around
Australia with our very special guest
performing in the studio
with the title track from
her current album which is definitely
the color of the day.
Here's Taylor Swift with Red.
Come on.
Forgetting him was like
trying to know somebody
you never met
Touching him
was like realizing all you
ever wanted was right there
in front of you
Memorizing him was as
easy as knowing all the words
to your old favorite
songs
Fighting with him was like
trying to solve a crossword
Realizing there's no right
answer
But I wish that you never
found out love could be
there
In this dark grey
all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to
know somebody you never
met
Then him come flashbacks
and echoes
Tell myself it's time now
And I still see it all
in my head
In this dark grey
all met to it's burning
street
So we hope you're having a wonderful time
we sure are with Taylor Swift
and her fans. And Dickies
Moe. If there's any kids watching that are a bit
spooked it's okay. It's just painted it
red in honor of Taylor Swift.
What about her band too? Taylor's Band?
Yes.
Taylor Swift band very good indeed. Listen
the album is red. Give generously to
Moe Vember too while we're on the subject. The album is
red. I think this song might have been inspired
by you Carl in some way.
It's called I Knew You Were Trouble.
Ladies and gentlemen here's Taylor
Swift.
You got me alone
I guess you didn't
care and I guess I like that
When I fell apart you took
a step back
Trouble when you walked in
It's a shame on
me now
Two places I've never been
Till you put me
down oh I knew you
were trouble when you walked in
It's a shame
on me now
Two places I've never been
Now I'm like
cold hard ground
Trouble, trouble, trouble
Trouble,
trouble, trouble
No apologies
He'll never see you cry
Pretends he doesn't know that he's
the reason why you try on me
You try on me
And I heard you
were always on the street
I knew nothing about it
Now I see
He was
Lonely
Two places I've never been
Till you put me down oh
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
It's a shame on me
Two places I've never been
Now I'm like
Trouble, trouble, trouble
Trouble,
trouble, trouble
Saddest fear
Comes creeping in
That you never loved me
Or her
Or anyone
Or anything
Two places I've never been
Trouble, trouble, trouble
Trouble,
trouble
Well hasn't it been a wonderful morning
Thank you so much from the bottom of our heart
to you and your magnificent band
for coming in so bright and early in the morning
It's been fantastic
You're late for school and late for work
But that's a good thing
Thank you so much for having me
It's been a pleasure, it's been an absolute pleasure.
What are you going to do while you're in the country?
I'm going to hang out with these people.
A few hugs as well.
Yes, absolutely, that's going to happen.
No, you go, no, no, no, you go, go on.
Hey, no, no, I can't now.
We just wanted to say thank you for being here, for coming to Australia.
Congratulations on all your success.
Thank you so much, it's amazing to be back.
When are you going to come back and tour?
Ooh, as soon as I can, definitely.
I mean, these are the best crowds.
Tomorrow on Today, the great Cash giveaway, don't miss it.
And meantime, look who's joined the show.
I Wake Up With Today.
