Anyone Can Paint These Birch Trees | Easy Watercolor Winter Scene

16 Video Views·Jan 22, 2026  #Arts #FineArts #watercolortutorial

In this watercolor tutorial, I’ll show you an easy and calm way to paint winter birch trees using a simple masking technique.
We start by masking the birch trunks, then paint a soft winter sky and background wet on wet. Once everything is dry, the tape is removed and the trunks are finished by painting along the edges, letting the paint create natural dark markings.
Finally, we add branches, small details, and gentle shadows in the snow.
This technique keeps the process relaxed and forgiving, and it works well for beginners as well as more experienced painters.

🎨 Materials used in this tutorial

Paper
Baohong Academy Watercolor Paper – 100% cotton, 300 gsm, cold pressed
(Small watercolor block – using a block helps prevent warping, so there’s no need to tape the paper down)

Paints
Cobalt Blue – Shinhan PWC
Prussian Blue – Shinhan PWC
Indigo – Schmincke Horadam
Neutral Tint – Daniel Smith

Brushes
Round brush, size 10 – for wetting the sky
Round brush, size 8 – for larger areas
Round brush, size 2 – for painting the birch trunk edges
Rigger brush, size 0 – for branches and fine details

Other supplies
Thin painter’s tape
Pencil (for a light horizon line)
Clean water
Paper towel or cloth
Heat tool (optional) – for speeding up drying between layers

💡 Tip:
If the paper starts to dry while painting wet on wet, let it dry completely, then re-wet it before continuing.
