New Bill Seeks to Strip Citizenship for Serious Crimes
On Jan. 19, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) introduced a bill that would expand federal authority to strip citizenship from naturalized Americans convicted of serious crimes.
The legislation, known as the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation (SCAM) Act, follows widespread fraud allegations in Minnesota and a period of unrest in the state.
In a post on X announcing the legislation, Schmitt explicitly referenced Minnesota’s Somali community and said the White House-backed measure would apply to naturalized citizens accused of fraud or other major criminal offenses.
Eric Schmitt said the United States has long relied on denaturalization as a legal penalty, noting that Congress approved the practice more than 100 years ago.
