Newcastle Upon Tyne is a vibrant city in northeast England known for its industrial heritage, rich arts scene, and friendly locals. Throughout history, the city has continuously reinvented itself, transforming from a powerhouse of shipbuilding and coal into a thriving creative hub.

In this travel guide we’ll dive deep into what makes Newcastle so special, spending a weekend discovering the city’s top attractions, as well as its hidden gems. We’ll begin our time in Newcastle by heading to the iconic Angel of the North before embarking on a tour of the city, discovering gems such as the Lit & Phil, Grainger Market, the castle, and Newcastle Cathedral.

We’ll then head to the Discovery Museum, where we’ll learn about some of the most important people and inventions to have come from Newcastle. The following day we’ll head to Novocastrian, a foundry and metalworks creating furniture based on the industrial heritage of the north east.

Next we’ll head to Ouseburn, the creative heart of Newcastle and an area packed with street art, galleries and cafés. There we’ll meet local artist Jim Edwards, who recounts what it’s like to live and work in the city. We’ll end our time in Newcastle by heading to Tynemouth, a stunning coastal town known for the dramatic ruins of a priory and castle overlooking the sea.
