Down by the Banks of the Ohio – Country Rose (Traditional Melody, New Lyrics)

I ask my love to take a stroll, to take a stroll Slow, soft and pure, by the edge of a silver stream Down by the banks, where the waters gleam Just promise me, you'll always stay And love no other, come what may Down beside, where the falling stream Down by the banks, where the waters gleam I drew a blank against her heart She leaned in close, not, don't take my life Not yet ready, for this night Just promise me, you'll always stay Down beside, where the falling stream Down by the banks, where the waters gleam I took her by, her pale soft hand And led her to, the river strand I lifted her, and cast her down And watched her drifting, from the town Just promise me, you'll always stay And love no other Down beside, where the falling stream Down by the banks, where the waters gleam In the dead of night, between the dark In the first pale light I lost the woman, I held dear Because she would not, be my bride Just promise me, you'll always stay And love no other Down beside, where the falling stream Down by the banks, where the waters gleam
