Illegal Immigrant Charged After Ramming Federal Agents' Vehicles in Texas

Federal officials in Dallas on Thursday spoke in front of a minivan they said was damaged last month by an illegal immigrant who injured a federal immigration agent when he rammed their vehicle while evading capture.

Jerson Lopez-Sanchez, 28, a Honduran national, was indicted this week on three counts of assaulting federal immigration agents. He faces up to 20 years in prison on each count if convicted.

“Vehicles in the hands of individuals who intend to obstruct or evade law enforcement are deadly weapons,” U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs said.

The indictment says that federal immigration agents in three vehicles conducted a traffic stop on the suspect's truck in suburban Dallas on Dec. 1. After he pulled over, the man put his truck in reverse, ramming the federal agent’s SUV behind him. While attempting to flee, he rammed another minivan containing two agents.

Officials say the man then fled on foot, and three of the five occupants in his vehicle were detained.

Officials at the news conference declined to give details on the agent’s injuries.
