Wei Ping Nie, childhood friend of Xi Jinping and a renowned Go player known as the "Wine Immortal," passed away yesterday in Beijing due to illness. Xinhua News Agency swiftly released the news today, granting him honors far exceeding those given to high-ranking officials who died under mysterious circumstances. According to the obituary released by his family, Nie suffered a cerebral infarction in March last year, fell into a coma for 12 days, regained consciousness, and actively underwent rehabilitation, but unfortunately suffered a sudden illness on Wednesday and died despite medical efforts. Born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province in northeastern China in 1952, Nie rose to fame in 1975 after winning the Chinese Go Championship, and was awarded the title of 9-dan Go master in 1982.In 1985, he defeated Kobayashi Koichi in the inaugural China-Japan Go Siegfried Match, shattering the myth of invincibility surrounding Japan's top-tier players. Nie Weiping achieved an astonishing 11-match winning streak in the China-Japan Go Siegfried Match, leading the Chinese team to victory three times and creating the "Siegfried legend." This made him the national spotlight of the time and sparked a nationwide Go boom in China. In 1988, he was awarded the title of "Go Sage" by the State Sports Commission of China, a distinction he remains the only recipient of to this day. He also served as head coach of China's national Go team and trained numerous world champions.After many years, Nie Weiping once again spoke about this honor: "Being 'the Sage of Go' is truly no easy task; this title has brought me pride for decades and also kept me uneasy for decades."
