According to his sons, JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH played the violin “purely and penetratingly” into his old age. His work as concertmaster in Weimar (1714-1717) and his acquaintance with virtuoso violinists such as the Dresden concertmaster Pisendel and Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar awakened his interest in violin literature, to which he contributed far more works than have survived to this day. The most important of these are undoubtedly the Sei solo a violino senza Baßo accompagnato – the original title of the three sonatas and partitas for solo violin, BWV 1001-1006. Even a famous violinist of the time said that “he had seen nothing more perfect for becoming a good violinist and could recommend nothing better to those eager to learn than the above-mentioned violin solos without bass.” Bach brought them to their final form in Köthen around 1720. The polyphonic playing skills required in these works have their roots in the specifically German violin art of masters such as Biber, Westhoff, and Pisendel. Their pieces, the richly ornamented adagios of Corelli, and his own keyboard fugues were Bach's models. It is said that he later played his solo sonatas regularly on the harpsichord. An arrangement for organ of the G minor fugue has even survived.
