Welcome back to Urchinist. Today, we're exploring a unique architectural gem located in Koryo,
a town in Nara Prefecture, Japan. Designed by Akihiro Tai Architectural Design Office in Koyori,
this 42-square-meter annex stands as a testament to the beauty of simplicity,
light, and materiality in an increasingly digital world. Set within a bustling residential
neighborhood, this annex was conceived as a retreat, a space where communication and
connection take precedence over the distractions of daily life and technology.
Separate from the main house, it serves as a venue for hosting guests and creating meaningful
interactions. One of the most striking features of this annex is its open, airy interior,
designed to allow the beauty of natural light to fill the space.
The design eliminates beams and columns, creating an uninterrupted flow and sense of openness.
At the heart of the structure, a large skylight brings light into the space,
changing throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
The black Taniguchi paper finish, which wraps around the space,
gently diffuses the light, transforming as the seasons and weather change.
This creates a dynamic environment where the space feels different at every moment,
reflecting the natural world outside.
On the side of the annex, a small garden or Tsubanawa
is introduced, bringing a touch of nature into the space.
Slit openings are strategically placed along the floor level to channel natural light,
casting soft reflections across the walls.
This design choice enhances the connection between the interior and the natural surroundings.
In a world where much of our communication happens through screens,
this annex offers a welcome reprieve.
It's a space that encourages real, face-to-face connection,
providing a calm and private sanctuary in the midst of the busy residential area.
The design's emphasis on light, materials, and simplicity invites visitors to engage
with the space in a way that feels natural and enriching.
It's a perfect example of how architecture can foster connection
and create a retreat from the screen-centered distractions of modern life.
Whether it's a quiet moment alone or time spent with others,
this annex offers a space that encourages reflection,
communication, and a deeper connection to the world around us.
A truly exceptional design in the heart of Koryo, Japan.
