The Strong force governs the interactions of quarks and gluons - the particles that make up the protons and neutrons in atoms. The theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) described the Strong force in exquisite detail, yet there's a very strange feature of this description.
It turns out that QCD allows for violations of a certain kind of symmetry, but this behaviour has never been observed. In fact, observations suggest that this symmetry is respected in nature! So what's wrong with our otherwise exceptional theory, and how can we fix it?

Shots In The Quark is a physics channel run by me (cosmology PhD student Matt Davies). My aim is to explain some of the most advanced, cutting-edge ideas in theoretical physics and philosophy of physics in a way that's accessible to everyone.
Explore my channel @shotsinthequark to find more videos where I take a deep-dive into topics from Relativity and Cosmology to Quantum Mechanics and Particle Physics.
