Learn Korean vowels step by step!✨
In this lesson, we’ll cover the 10 basic vowels of Hangul (Korean alphabet):
ㅡ[eu], ㅣ[i],ㅏ [a], ㅑ[ya],ㅓ[eo], ㅕ[yeo], ㅗ [o], ㅛ [yo], ㅜ[u], ㅠ[yu].
Korean contains the wisdom of King Sejong the Great.
The vowels are the combination of the dot, the line, and the vertical line.
The dot 아래야 represents the sky, the vertical line represents a human, and the line represents
the ground.
These three are the elements that form vowels.
There are a total of 21 vowels in the Korean alphabet.
It has a fixed order from 아 to 이.
Today we will learn about the 10 basic vowels.
We will start with the line that makes the ㅡ sound.
If you shape your lips like a straight line, you can produce ㅡ.
Think of your lips as a straight line to make it easier to remember.
The vertical line makes a ㅣ sound.
It looks like the English letter I.
Thinking of the I will make it easy to remember ㅣ.
The dot 아래야 has gradually changed in shape over time.
Originally 아래야 was a dot, but people wrote more quickly.
The 아래야 naturally changed into a short stork.
Now we are going to attach the dot 아래야 to vowels ㅡ and ㅣ.
The following content is not a linguistic explanation.
It's simply a storytelling tool and a memory aid.
When the sun rise above the ground, it becomes ㅗ.
When the sun and the moon rise together above the ground, the sky shouts ㅛ.
When the rain falls below the ground, it becomes ㅜ.
When the rain falls with thunder below the ground, it rumbles ㅛ.
When I receive a gift, I exclaim with delight ㅏ.
When I get two shining gifts, I cheer ㅑ.
When a ball comes from behind I, I jump and say ㅓ.
When two balls bounce from behind I at the same time, I cry out ㅕ.
Let's pronounce them one more time.
First, we learned ㅡ and ㅣ.
If you attach dots above ㅡ, it becomes ㅗ or ㅛ.
If you attach dots below ㅡ, it becomes ㅜ or ㅕ.
If you attach dots to the right of ㅣ, it becomes ㅏ or ㅑ.
If you attach dots to the left of ㅣ, it becomes ㅓ or ㅕ.
ㅡ, ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅕ, ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ
That's all for today.
We've learned all 10 basic vowels.
In the next lesson, we will learn compound vowels.
Bye-bye.
