Hillary and Chelsea Clinton are opening up about a time they felt gutsy with Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall. "I had to be quite gutsy as a little girl, and as a teenager and adolescent, because there were so many pressures and bright lights and cameras staring at me when I was growing up," she said. Her mom said she has had to be gutsy in her past too, personally, and politically. The duo was honored at the 2022 Variety's Power of Women event for their work on their "Gutsy" documentary series.
How are you?
I'm good, how are you?
Thank you so much.
I kind of gave up on the bottom of my heart.
Very, very conscientious.
Practicality is key at this party.
Good for you.
A woman after my own heart.
Thank you.
They also look very soft, which I appreciate.
They are very cozy.
They're birdies, if you're interested in placing your order.
I love birdies.
I am.
You know, well, it's also because I love a jumpsuit, and my daughter told me that basically
they're like a onesie, and I'm like, that is true.
She is spot on.
You are correct, and I am proud.
She gets it.
So congratulations.
You're being honored tonight.
Sharing women's stories.
Talk to me a little bit about how the project came together, and what's it mean to you to
be honored among such incredible women tonight?
First of all, it is an incredible experience to be honored at all, and especially among
the women who are here tonight.
And this came out of a book that Chelsea and I wrote called The Book of Gutsy Women, and
we had the opportunity, thanks to Apple TV+, to tell the stories of women who inspired
us, and we wanted to put those out in the world right now.
There's so much doom and gloom, so many people are discouraged, and we wanted to say, look,
it's not easy, but let us introduce you to women who, yeah, some of the names you know,
most of them you don't, who are doing things to try to make the world a better place.
In theory, it was really important to us that we not only have women who are gutsy
in so many different ways, whether helping to defend our planet, or defend human rights,
or who are gutsy as mothers, and also that it was important to us to have women of many
generations.
And so we have women who are older than my mom, and younger than me, women from all over
the country, and we're also really proud that all of our directors were women.
Our showrunner was a woman.
We had women in sound and lighting, and our chief grip was a woman, and we had women camera
people, and that all was also important to us, so it was both about the stories we were
telling, and how we were telling those stories.
I know, I've got to let you go.
So lastly, when have you felt most gutsy?
When you think about your life, when you think about the last year, we've been asking most
women, when have you felt most empowered, but I'm going to tailor this.
It's going to be on brand for the show, okay?
When have you felt most gutsy?
Yeah, I was just going to say, I think that I had to be quite gutsy as a little girl,
and as a teenager and adolescent, because there were so many pressures and bright lights
and cameras staring at me when I was growing up.
I think that right now, women in America have to be gutsy, because to be a woman in America
right now means that we are political, because politicians have decided that they know better
about our bodies than we do.
So we all have to find our gutsiness to push back on that forcefully.
Yep, absolutely.
No, it's absolutely true.
And I've said before, both in my personal life and my public and political life, there
have been a number of occasions where I feel that it took a big bit of gutsiness to make
a decision to keep going.
But right now, I think after being really downed by what the Supreme Court did and the
kind of craziness that some people are pushing in our country, I just had to get my gutsiness
back up to go back out there, because there's so much misogyny and sexism online.
And any woman, any woman in whatever area who puts her head up into the public arena
is going to be a target.
And obviously, Chelsea and I have had that experience.
But it's not going to stop us.
We are going to keep speaking up and speaking out, standing up for women's rights and human
rights and gay rights and just the kind of country and world that we want.
I get chills just hearing it.
It's exactly what we need.
Thank you both so much for stopping tonight.
Congratulations.
Take care.
