This week on OSRL. This is a very exciting time. Well bad news y'all. You're supposed to get a
little mud on your bum? Mud bum? I think it's gonna look really cool when it's done. Now let's get to
cobbin. How's it going y'all? Welcome back to the channel. Now this is a very exciting time. We
should be bringing someone out here with a large excavator soon to dig out these trenches for the
earth tube. Very excited. I cannot wait for that to go down. Meanwhile I got some time on my hands
so I'm going to do some work to solidify a couple of these posts. I have a couple of these posts
just sitting on blocks which I'm not crazy about. So I'm actually going to make larger blocks.
I'm going to set these in some concrete that will cover the concrete base as well as the lower
portion of the post. Then we're going to build a wall going around those. Definitely a lot of work.
I want to get to it. Meanwhile that excavator should be here in a day or two and I cannot wait
to move on with the earth tube project. Well there are so many birds out here. It's a bird
stravaganza. I already cut up some boards for this project. Fortunately I have to put everything
together in place. I'm actually going to bring this form all the way up past this metal strap
so that this whole thing will be encased in concrete. I'm going to put in some of this extra
remesh that we have to add some strength to the concrete. All right I got the concrete poured for
the first post. I'm gonna start building the forms for the second and we'll get the concrete poured
there. Then we'll wait for that to set. Man those winds are getting crazy. I could have sworn I
checked the winds earlier today and it wasn't supposed to be this bad but here we are. Those
winds are pretty intense. I'm glad I got the cementing done. That's one thing I could check
off my list. I was hoping to get some cob done today but I don't know if I'll be able to quite
do that. It might be a little too windy for that but I can start getting ready for that. I'm going
to get some rocks ready because I'm going to need a lot of rocks and then maybe once the wind comes
down I could get started on the cob. I don't have to go that far myself.
Whoa anyone's interested in a garden tour let us know down in the comments.
Good morning. Well I got the post cemented in. I got things prepped for the cob wall.
Now let's get to cobbing. I gotta fill my cart full of some dirt and then let's get to it.
Let's get it done. All right so that was just one cart full of dirt. Maybe just a couple of
carts and I might have this section of wall done right before the entrance of the root cellar.
Very cool. As you can see again the water's taking a little bit of time. I'm trying to drain the rest
of this water out of this IBC tote and there's not much left. Then I'll be moving on to the
Hacienda totes. I've also been mixing in some of this some of the gravel and do the sifting.
Might as well pick the rocks up from out here and make it easier to dig as well.
What percentage of our house do you think will be rocks? 90 percent.
Think that's enough rocks? Really loaded it up.
All right dog walking time.
I'm really enjoying these little walks. Sometimes we've been taking
UVA for a little walk in the afternoon and we take crew after after that and
it's just kind of nice to get out and enjoy the sunny day enjoy the property.
It's a really good time to connect. So as we were walking I was just just remarking just on an
observation that I had done just noticing that the grass kind of has a permanent bend on it
in the direction of the prevailing winds which you then went on to say.
That's a very good observation. I like to I just like to put that out there.
I know sometimes you can tell that with trees trees will bend in the direction of the prevailing
wind but I never thought of looking at the grass. Yeah the grass is actually very obvious once you
start looking at it all the grass has just this permanent bend toward the southwest. Yeah and
around here we have more grass than trees. For now but I've been noticing a lot more
mesquite trees around here which I do want to talk to you about another observation that I've made.
Kind of cool how the spines almost kind of reflect the color of the flowers.
Cool rock. Yeah they're all cool just like you. Well bad news y'all I called up our excavator
the other day and it turns out he's not going to be able to make it as expected. He's got
tied up with another project he's not going to be able to make it over here but he said that you
know he is going to be in the area he is working in the area and he'll let us know when he's done
with that project and it becomes available so not going to be now but hopefully hopefully soon.
Yeah I was looking forward to that uh yeah hopefully he can get out here soon.
Yeah I was really hoping uh that he would have been able to get on this project but you know
I was fortunate that he was even talking about coming out so soon but I am eager to get on with
this project so as soon as he gets here we can move forward with the earth tubes but until then
obviously I've been I've still been pretty busy so I'm just going to keep working on that wall.
All right well I was hoping to get this part of the wall done just yesterday but
I ended up kind of having to finish that off in the morning but that's okay it's done and it's
looking pretty nice. Now I believe this wall will eventually be a little higher maybe a little
thicker but that's good for right now and then I'm just going to kind of keep on moving down
eventually it's going to cover up this path in front of the dome twist around cover up that
other post and head right over to the root cellar kind of one long stretch but let's call Jess over
and see what she thinks about all this. Hey uh hey Jess tell me what you think about this so far.
There they are. Oh wow you made a lot of progress on that. Yeah a decent amount in a little over a
day. That's looking good. You want to sit on it? It's about perfect sitting height. Um looks a little
moist. You opposed to getting a little mud on your bum? Yeah. Mud bum?
All right the wall's coming along. Time to get back to mudding though.
You gonna do some mudding? Gonna do some mudding?
All right well I'm really excited about the progress I've made on this wall.
I probably got about six feet of it done. I feel really good about how much I got done in such a
short amount of time but uh I'm just gonna keep plugging away. It honestly feels really good to
be playing with the dirt again. I mean I've had a lot of fun with the framing but uh just getting
in there mixing cob again slapping that down moving the rocks feels really good and it's just
fun sort of getting to craft and mold this wall. So I'm really excited. Of course now it's going to
kind of twist and turn around the front of the entrance of the dome. I think it's going to look
really nice and it's probably a little safer than having that steep drop off right in front of the
dome. I think it's going to look really cool when it's done. Hey oh there she is.
All right well man I am I'm getting tired. Bear with us. It's another windy day. Just been
battling those winds but it's it's like that every spring. Uh and I'm a little sore. Uh man a lot of
work trying to get that uh as much of that wall done as I could. I got to ease up a little bit
but I want to keep going and I really want to get this wall knocked out sooner rather than later.
I really like the stability that uh you know you've been putting the cement around those
two posts and now putting that cob wall down. Those are probably like the strongest posts now.
They were the weakest posts now they're the strongest posts. But uh there's actually going
to be more going around this whole thing so very exciting. And I think I think it's just going to
be a lot safer with all that little wall there right outside the dome so no one just like stumbles
out and falls in right into the root cellar. Well I always get nervous when crew walks around this
area because he's not real stable on his feet anymore so that'll make me feel a little bit
better about that. Yeah I think it's going to look a lot different too once that wall is in.
I mean just uh I got about six feet of that wall done right now and it already looks
transformative doesn't it? Yeah it does. It doesn't just look like a Snickers bar it looks like
something. But yeah so uh you know I'm a little disappointed obviously that the excavator couldn't
be out here digging those trenches so we're gonna have to wait a little bit on that project but
that's okay it happens. I'm just glad he can come out I'm just glad he's going to be able to come
out here as soon as he is. So hopefully this week maybe this weekend we'll see. He's a busy man
sometimes it's tough to get really good quality help out here and I'm willing to wait for the
best. Yeah but it's been uh trying I mean I've lost a little bit of time on this project due to
uh the winds a little bit. The winds have been tough uh I had an allergy setback and uh one of
those days that really incapacitated me and allergies have been bothering you lately haven't
they? Yeah I think so and I'm not usually I'm more of the like uh fall hay fever kind of thing but
uh yeah I don't know what's going on with the the allergies this year. Well yeah there's a like
forest growing out over the by the dirt over there so I don't know if we're having some kind
of weird allergens this year but um but you've been doing a lot of research on that right?
Yeah. You've been kind of focused this past week on sort of reading and taking notes that's kind
of what you've been doing right? I'm making it my mission to see what I can do to what we can do
like naturally to improve our allergies yeah because I hate taking allergy medication.
I mean that's part of the reason what incapacitated me earlier was just not only the
allergies but taking something for the allergies which made me incredibly tired. Yeah. So that's
what's been going on here. I'm really excited about the progress and I can't wait to keep
moving that cob wall all the way around here. Very exciting and hopefully we'll get those
trenches dug soon so we can move forward with the earth tubes but things are coming along and you
know if one project gets delayed there's always something else that can be done around here.
All right y'all don't forget to give this video a big thumbs up for cob walls
and we'll catch on the next video everyone. Bye!
