Hey guys, welcome back to TikTok Radio IRL. Today we're here with a changed man.
You know him, you love him. It's Charlie Puth.
That was good.
Thank you. I rehearsed it.
Yeah, no, I like that.
And since we're on TikTok Radio, we should refer to you actually as Professor Puth.
I had no idea that that would catch on.
It's catching on and you're teaching us all.
You're educating us all on the art of music, how it actually works.
It's amazing, which we'll get into.
It's good to see you again.
How is New York treating you? You've had a busy day.
New York is overwhelming, as usual.
What's the point of driving anywhere?
The roads are like this thick.
I've never seen anyone park their car on a road in New York.
The cars are already there.
And you got to be careful with the bikes now, too.
There's people jumping.
Someone threw a hat on top of our car the other day and took a picture of it.
Get the hat off the car.
Yeah, like a Yankees cap.
And the guy threw a fit and he was like, I wanted a picture.
Like, what, man?
There's bicycles flying everywhere.
It's like papaya dog, which is good, but I don't know.
So if I'm breathing heavy, New York is overwhelming me.
It's the grit. It's the grind.
Yeah, but I'm calmed down now because you are here.
Oh, Charlie, stop it.
You're going to make me blush.
First of all, congratulations.
Thank you.
Your wife Brooke is pregnant.
You guys are having a baby.
You know the gender, but you're not saying the gender.
So we're going to hope and pray right now that you keep your mouth shut, right?
Yes.
I'm so afraid of tripping over my words and accidentally revealing it.
I know.
You're hoping that your child is a fan of music, right?
Yeah, but they don't have to.
They don't have to be.
But they can be whatever they want to be.
But obviously music, that would be nice.
It would be nice, yeah.
And you're doing the headphone thing.
You're making sure that baby is getting fed music.
Yes, that, that.
What is baby hearing as of right now?
What's on baby playlist?
Baby playlist, well, whether baby likes it or not is dad's album.
And Brooke is also always listening to it, whether she likes it or not.
Because the house that we're in, we converted a living room into a studio.
And I'm just checking the mix constantly.
And she was like, it's good.
Can you please play something else?
Or maybe silence?
She's heard changes probably a thousand times.
I know that she likes calm music, your calm music.
What you are trying to figure out what that exactly means.
I don't know what that means.
She likes silence and she likes it when I sing softly.
And I thought I did sing softly.
You do, you do.
Your new single Changes is out now.
It's soft.
There's an 80s flair to it.
I love the music video so much.
Thank you.
The Canadian tuxedo, which you have going on right now.
Do you know what's so great about this getup is that I just,
I don't have to think about what I'm wearing.
I can just, I wanted to dress like the teacher every day.
And I just throw on a tie.
This is Uniqlo.
I love it.
Uniforms are underrated.
You know, you wake up, you put it on, you're out the door.
It's done.
JW Anderson, Uniqlo.
Let's not forget.
Let us not forget that this is a collab item you're wearing.
This is like a limited edition piece you got going on.
And I love it.
Your fourth studio album, Whatever's Clever is set to release March 6th.
So exciting.
Your baby's also due in March as well.
So it's going to be a lot, lots of changes, lots of things happening in March.
Lots of changes.
But you know, it's so funny.
And I was telling someone this earlier that changes, the song changes.
It's not, sure, it could be perceived to be about fatherhood.
And yes, Brooke's in the video as well.
But the song didn't start out like that.
The song is about like a friendship breakup.
And there's been some changes in our life.
I can feel the distance.
Space and time has made everything different.
Every day and night, everything's changing.
I don't know why.
But deep down, you do know why.
It's sometimes people move on.
Sometimes people meet new people.
And move, maybe this person moves here.
You move there.
You don't see each other as much.
And it's, you know, less contact is inevitable.
But, you know, it's sad, but it's not like that sad.
I love the quote that's, friends are in your reason for a season, a reason, a season or a lifetime.
Ooh, I've never, I like that.
Oh, really?
Basically, it's like, you know, people are in your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime,
which I think is really clear and honest and true.
And everything evolves over time.
And it doesn't mean you hate the person or that you have bad blood.
Absolutely.
You change.
That's, I wish I knew that quote earlier, because that would have been so great to bring up.
But now I'm going to save it in my memory box.
Are you going to make a song about it?
Well, I already did.
It's Changes.
Yes, exactly.
All right.
So I, this is kind of a throwback.
But Elton John came up to you in 2019 and said, your music's not good.
He said, it's not authentic.
And he said, you're better than this.
And you felt like it was kind of like a gut punch to you because you felt deep down that
he was sort of right.
Well, yeah, only because I knew he was right.
Yeah, you knew he was right.
And from there, or just in general, you have really strived to remain authentic in your
music.
And I can feel that now with Changes.
And I know that's going to be with your new album.
We're going to hear that as well.
Do you feel like authenticity is an important value to you, not just in your music, but
also in all aspects of your life?
Absolutely.
It's important in all aspects of my life.
It makes me more relaxed not having to put on a suit every time I come to Sirius.
It makes me happy that I can have a conversation with you.
And I've always had authentic conversations with you.
But I don't have to put on any front.
Like, I don't care.
I'm just me.
And I'm just the most comfortable I've ever been.
And I think I've made songs in the past when I was the most comfortable I had ever been
at that time.
This whole notion that I had to be surrounded by chaos to make good art is actually something
that I used to think.
I think that was just a part of growing up.
It was like a really immature thought.
You know, I grew up.
I'm currently in improv school right now.
Where?
At UCB.
Great.
It's like the one that Amy Poehler starred in everything.
Oh, they must love you there.
Having you on the radio here.
Do people freak out when they listen to this?
See you at the school, too?
Sometimes.
Yeah.
You have fans.
Don't be shy.
No, but I've been so much more authentic ever since I've been in that.
And it's probably so fun.
It's inspiring me to really, truly be myself.
So I love that you're doing that as well.
I love that you found that.
And how you've been in that for three years.
No, I'm not.
I mean, this is not.
I just yesterday was session eight.
So week eight.
Oh, my God.
New fresh.
And then I'm graduating to improv 201 next.
Oh, my God.
How high does it go?
It goes to four.
Okay.
Well, you'll get to four in no time.
We can pray if I pass.
I'm very happy for you.
That's awesome.
Thank you.
So you've been making educational videos on TikTok, Professor Puth.
And I've actually learned so much about it.
I learned about interpolation.
You're getting out the whiteboard and everything.
And I'm such a big fun fact guy.
I'm always throwing out fun facts about everything.
My dad always says knowledge is power.
It's better to know more about a lot of things than one singular thing.
So for you, I want to ask you.
If you can't come up with anything, it's all good.
But do you have a music fun fact for me to share today?
It could be small.
It could be big.
Just a fun fact that most people wouldn't know.
Yeah, it's kind of dorky.
And I think it may have.
I'm sorry if I've said this before.
But do you know what an 808 is?
You ever hear Will.i.am say 808 drum?
Or Britney.
I think she sings in like a 808.
When she says 808, it's referring to a Roland 808 drum machine.
And the Roland 808 drum machine, you know records that have it.
Do you know Big Papa by Notorious B.I.G?
Yes, yes.
Or Yeah by Usher?
Of course.
You know the clap?
That's from an 808, a TR-808 drum machine.
808 drum makes you put your hands up.
Yeah, absolutely.
And has been doing that since the early 80s.
But when it first came out, it was a really not successful thing.
Because everybody was like, why do I need a drum machine?
I'll just hire a drummer.
And it wasn't until a little bit later, like years later, it caught on.
And Run-D.M.C. used it in songs.
And people still, I still think it's like the most used other than the Lindrum.
Which is like the Sabrina Carpenter uses the Lindrum a lot.
It's like those big fat snares that like Jack Antonoff uses.
I use them.
Like everybody uses them.
They're just wonderful.
But that was a success.
More of a success than the 808.
And then the 909, which is like, you know, Vogue, Madonna.
Yes And, which is kind of by Ariana.
Which is kind of like an elbow nudge to that song as well.
That has 909s in it.
Yeah, it's just, I love talking about this stuff.
Because like, you know Yes And by Ariana.
But you probably never thought about like, oh, what the hi-hat was.
But I feel like people are interested to know how to make their favorite recipes.
Like if you love chocolate chip cookies, don't you want to learn how to like make your own?
So you don't have to spend $13 at Levain.
Exactly.
Well, I love that you are sharing that.
I think it's also inspiring people that want to do music and learn how to do it.
I also too, like the better headphones I have, you can really, if you listen closely,
the more you understand songs, you really hear the production, hear what's in the background.
Yeah, there's like little elements that are like, you know, hiding in there that the producer
took time to, or the artist took time to throw in there.
And, you know, a song is not meant to be listened to once and only once.
It grows over time.
You're like, oh, I didn't even know that was here.
That was there.
Okay, so we are on TikTok radio.
Are you familiar with brain rot words?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, you know them all?
Not all of them.
I was just with Jimmy Falun the other night, we did a sketch full of brain rot words,
which I think is on TikTok right now.
They uploaded to TikTok and there were a couple of like, I didn't know what,
I didn't know what 6-7 is.
6-7, yeah.
But now I guess it's like an either or thing, like 6-7.
Or it's like, you know, somebody did something really great or like,
it's like really tall or like big, like something mighty.
It's like 6-7.
You would yell that.
So it's like pushing, when Gunna said pushing pee, it's like,
and he wouldn't tell us what pee was.
It's just positivity.
Pushing.
Yeah.
What's your For You page looking like right now?
Oh my god.
It's a mess.
It's a bunch of sorrow videos of kittens,
like oversized kittens running through the house and wrecking everything.
Wonderful.
It's people that you wouldn't expect who know how to sing in the Philippines,
like singing better than Whitney Houston.
A lot of music stuff.
And I try not to look at it too much.
I try and I do everything I can.
I make my screen bright red so I can sleep better.
I have the locks, the app lock.
It's not now.
Oh yeah, you ignore it.
You just ignore it every time.
I just tell myself just an hour.
Just an hour.
That's it.
Remind me in 15 minutes.
But do you know about the hack of making your screen?
It's TikTok radio and we're going over ways to not watch as much TikTok.
But like the hack is to make your screen completely red
and it makes it less addicting to look at.
Okay, I need to do that.
Especially at nighttime.
Yes.
Mama likes scroll.
Yeah, mama likes to scroll too.
We need to control mama.
Yeah, mama's out of control.
What's your opinion on the La Boo Boo?
You like the La Boo Boo?
I like the La Boo Boo.
It reminds me of when Beanie Babies were at pharmacies and just everywhere.
My friend's little daughter loves La Boo Boo.
And she also loves Demon Hunters and is born in Toluca Lake
and can now speak full Korean, which is crazy.
Damn, that's impressive.
You should do something with the Demon Hunters.
Get a song on there with them.
I'm fascinated by that because...
Blew up.
It blew up and I was around for Spice Girls.
I was around for Backstreet, NSYNC, Bieber Fever, etc, etc.
This is the first one that I missed.
Demon Hunters and everyone...
I see Kate.
Her name's Kate.
She's speaking full Korean and I'm like, what the hell?
How did you learn to speak Korean?
She was like, Demon Hunters.
And I'm like, what's Demon Hunters?
Oh my god, I'm officially getting kind of old.
Unk.
Is that a brain rot word?
I don't know.
Somebody, like little middle schoolers that I was interviewing the other day,
they called me unk, which means like old.
And I said, am I unk?
But you're not old.
I know.
I just think it's like if you don't know something, they're like unk.
And it's hard to keep up.
Yikes.
Well, god, we'll see them in 10 years and all.
Right.
They're laughing now.
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, Charlie, thank you so much for coming back.
We're ending on, **** these kids.
I know, exactly.
You guys, listen to Changes now.
Yes, listen to Changes.
Yes.
And whatever's clever coming out March 6th.
March 6th.
And it's going to be a good time.
Can't wait.
Spicy season.
Spicy Pisces.
And hopefully another three years doesn't go by where we don't talk to each other.
I know.
I missed you.
And I'm glad that's working out for you.
That like the improvisation.
It's great to express yourself.
Thank you.
I want to do more of it.
I want to keep going.
It's like therapeutic.
It really is.
I would be so bad at it.
You would kill it.
No.
All it is is yes and.
That's all it is.
Just like Ariana Grande did.
That's so fun.
I picture you in like a ballroom with like a lot of people.
And it like gets sweaty.
And you're just like expressing yourself.
Yesterday I did a scene.
We're finishing right now.
But I did a scene yesterday where I played a sous chef in a kitchen.
That's fun.
I went ham with the rest of my class going staff, staff, staff, staff.
And they all had to line up.
And then I really ripped them a new one.
It was good.
It was really fun.
And the teacher was like, wow, that was really good.
Wow.
Well, you are very good.
Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
All right, Charlie.
Thank you for coming back on TikTok radio.
I'll see you next time.
See you in three years.
Yeah.
