Imagine an empire so vast it spanned three continents: Europe, Asia Minor, and North Africa. An empire with millions of inhabitants from all races, ethnicities, and cultures. Rome, a city that began as a small village, became a melting pot of civilizations, where the customs of the most diverse peoples blended together. But how did the Romans view the various races and ethnicities that made up their empire? How did they categorize the peoples of the conquered territories, from noble Greeks to the ‘barbarians’ of the north?

In this video, we’ll explore the Roman view of race and ethnicity, and how the Romans perceived the peoples that formed their great empire. In their time, the concept of ‘race’ was not based on skin color but something much more complex: culture, language, customs, and, of course, Romanization.

Join me as we discover how the Romans classified and perceived the peoples of the known world, and how, in many cases, their prejudices mixed with their fascination for the exotic.

In the Roman world, the concept of ‘race’ didn’t exist as we understand it today. For the Romans, distinction wasn’t based on skin color but on geographical origin, language, customs, and behavior. Imagine that an average Roman would ask you about your race. What they really wanted to know wasn’t the color of your skin, but which people you belonged to: Are you Greek, Carthaginian, Germanic, Egyptian, or perhaps Hispanic? Each of these ‘races’ came with a set of stereotypes that the Romans used to define the culture and abilities of those people.

In this video, we bring you an in-depth look at how Rome, through Romanization, unified vast lands, but also how their prejudices and perceptions of conquered peoples influenced their relationships with different groups. Was Rome an example of tolerance, or just an empire that leveraged its diversity to strengthen its power? Discover it with us!
