Congratulations on the film. Amazing. We absolutely loved it. We saw it yesterday.
Nice to have you in our country and have you back in our country. Have you had fun since being back?
Yeah, a lot. And too many snacks. That's amazing.
Burger Rings? Is this the choice of snack?
Yes, this is the very first thing I wanted him to try in Australia.
Is that true?
I love Burger Rings. You don't?
No, no, sorry. I do.
I don't.
I told you. What's your chippy of choice?
I was about to say no.
Was Vegemite not on the list?
We had Vegemite at home. Did you ever try Vegemite there?
I have to try so many things and I only have 48 hours.
Diego, it would be weird if you were sitting here with a jar of Vegemite next to you.
Really?
I can't believe I didn't let you try Vegemite because you can get that in America.
We were working all day.
What would you get Margot to try from Mexico?
Mole, first of all. Mole and mezcal.
You know how we're both nodding like we know what mole is?
Mole is delicious.
What is it?
How do you describe it?
You need more than 100 pieces to make it and it has chocolate, chile, I don't know.
It's like something very, very from the old days.
It's kind of like a paste consistency and it's like this brown.
Like a curry.
But it's not like with a meat in it.
Is it the base for everything?
No, you just eat the mole and it's so delicious.
It's like a spoon.
You can do it with chicken or enchiladas but we literally do it just to enjoy the flavor.
It's so good.
When I went to Mexico City, Diego helped me with a couple of restaurant recommendations and bookings.
The food is amazing.
Talk to us about the film because I feel like that's what we need.
We could talk about food.
Do you mind if I ask the hard-hitting question?
Sure, it's a thing we all need.
Yes.
One of the opening scenes.
There is elephant poo galore and I needed to know when watching.
What do you do to make fake poo look like poo on screen?
Smell it.
You're not allowed to say it.
Smell it.
Yeah, yeah.
No, they put some kind of syrup with a lot of like dirt.
But believe it or not, it smells good and tastes good.
I mean, I was there like of course something will get into your mouth.
It tastes good.
What do you mean some kind of syrup?
What syrup?
Syrup.
I don't know.
Like a chocolate syrup?
Stop hiding the recipe.
You know, like maple syrup or something like that.
Yeah, let's say molasses.
That opening scene is quite hectic.
But the whole opening, I was going to say mini-movie before the titles because when the titles come up,
you feel like you've been already watching the movie for about an hour.
I know.
When I was watching it with my mom when she came to the L.A. premiere, by the time Babylon came up,
she goes, is that just the start?
And I was like, buckle up, mom.
There's a lot more that's going to happen.
She was like, whoa.
But it's so hectic.
Like it's such – have you ever in real life been to a party like that?
No.
Never.
Not like that.
No.
I've been to some good ones.
Just not quite Babylon.
I feel like you are asking the polite version of that question.
Which is what?
What's being impolite?
Diego, have you ever been urinated on at a party?
No.
Golden showers, is that a phrase you use in Mexico?
It's golden – does that translate?
I think it's golden shower all over.
It's like a worldwide concept.
I need to know because if I go to Mexico, I need to know what to ask for.
No, there's this Mexican dish.
No, no, no.
So obviously, though, the idea is it's next level.
But there'd be an element of truth to that's what happens in Hollywood.
Definitely back then.
Yes.
How much has it changed do you think?
I think it's definitely a lot more tame now for a number of reasons.
But back then, it was wild.
And there were just a ton of different drugs.
No one's drinking ether in their drinks at a party.
Heroin isn't just passed around at parties.
Honestly, when researching this, I was astounded at how many drugs they were doing.
And on set, too.
They would literally give actresses amphetamines to lose weight and to stay awake
and put everyone on amphetamines to keep working.
And then it would make people horny and then they'd all be having sex on set.
I mean, it was, like, crazy.
They would have uppers and downers and it was just completely unregulated and mayhem.
I think, to be honest, it shocks me that you're saying it doesn't happen now
because from afar, no, but seriously.
No way.
Kind of sometimes, given what's happened in the last few years
and everything feels like it's got a lot to itself anyway,
I would have thought maybe that still happened.
But not at your party.
No, no, no.
And like I said, since iPhones came in, I think everyone has to pull back on everything.
Is it hard drawing the line?
Because obviously acting is about being part of the world that you're trying to portray.
Is it hard making a movie that is about debauchery and then trying to do it professionally?
No, it's just exhausting is all.
It's like an extreme sport, in a way.
Yeah, it's honestly more exhausting than doing an action film
where you're so knackered at the end of every day.
You lose your voice all the time.
I lost my voice at the end of every single week, I reckon.
I would have no voice over the weekend.
I mean, you're wild.
Yes.
How many weeks did it take to do the opening bit?
I think we did the party in two weeks with exterior.
So exterior and interior we did probably in two weeks.
Your character is obviously bold from the beginning and says she's a star from the beginning
and she's just waiting for someone to discover her, really.
When you went over there, what was your feeling?
How did you feel about yourself when you went to Hollywood?
A similar way to Nellie, I think, in that she was like,
I need to make this happen.
I don't care what it takes.
I have to end up on a film set.
I think what is still true of Hollywood is everything is an opportunity.
Nellie goes to a party and someone sees her dancing.
The number of times that you get your break through some weird coincidence like that,
but it doesn't just come to you.
You have to put yourself out there.
You have to be out there banging on doors and hustling for luck to hit you.
Do you remember those moments for you?
Is there a defining moment when you got there and you were like,
actually, I think this is the turning point?
Or a party like that or an interview or a meeting or something where you were like?
I was pretty organised, honestly, but by the time I'd had my time.
It was more about when I got to Melbourne, to be honest.
That was when it was more of that kind of cold call people,
sleep on someone's couch, get a job from that job.
Parlay one thing into the next thing.
That was when I was more like that.
Then once I was on Neighbours, I could plan and strategise
how I'd make the jump over to America.
But then once I was in America, you do have to hustle.
I still feel like I have to hustle.
I feel like I hustled for this job.
I was like, Damien, give me the role, please.
I didn't know if it was a sure thing for me to get it.
It's a passion of mine.
It's ironic that the movie is about how fleeting fame can be
and you guys are doing this at the top of your game.
Do you ever worry about how quickly stars can diminish?
Yeah.
I didn't mean that to be so depressing.
Anyway, guys, enjoy while it lasts.
It'll be over soon.
I mean, kind of, yeah.
I go one month without working and I'm like,
maybe I'll never work again.
Friends are like, I think you're fine.
I think you're fine.
So much of my time and energy is spent on producing
and a production company that I'm so busy with that
that actually I don't...
Maybe that's good.
I don't have the fear of what if I don't get cast in another job
that I used to have.
I think you're going to make movies the rest of your life.
I'm definitely going to make movies the rest of my life.
Definitely.
In some capacity.
Even if I have to, you know, I'll do any...
I would do a Manny.
I would be like, I'll do any job you need
as long as I can keep up with it.
Perhaps production or whatever.
Any of it.
There's a scene I'm confused about because I read that
in a scene you improvised and kissed Brad Pitt,
even though it wasn't in the script,
which is exactly what you should have done.
But then we did see you kiss Brad Pitt.
Was that the scene or was it a bigger kiss that didn't get in there?
No, no, no.
That was it?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It wasn't a big...
I mean, I have this huge, very sensual kiss with Lily
like 10 minutes later and weirdly no-one's brought that kiss up.
Everyone's like completely overlooked.
No, we were down for that as well.
Everyone was like, oh.
I was like, I thought we were going to get up.
Lily and I were like, we did a really good kiss
and no-one was asking us about it.
Rude.
We've heard there's a scene where you had sex with Brad Pitt
and it just made the cut.
And what about the scene in the backyard that you shot,
that the director shot on his iPhone?
How did that happen?
I mean, Diego and Damien and Olivia pretty much filmed the entire film
on Damien's iPhone in his backyard.
And then I came in and we did our scenes
because it was a part of our chemistry reading.
So it was, yeah, it's kind of hilarious.
And I've seen some of the footage.
It's so weird to watch it.
I'm like, oh, my God, my hair's like short.
It was just...
Because it was locked out, was it?
It was, yeah.
It was COVID.
And so we couldn't do like everything the normal way.
So, yeah.
But it was great.
A lot of parts that made it to the movie,
that he changed the script during our chemistry reading.
That's so cool.
We were improvising during the chemistry reading
and then he'd go and rewrite the script to kind of incorporate
the vibe that we just found.
It was a really cool process with Damien.
We've just been wrapped up.
It's an amazing film.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Nice to see you again.
Glad we covered the important topics.
I told you.
I need to know what the ---- was.
Elephant ----.
Drugs.
Golden showers.
Yep.
