In the last years before his death, Mozart turned increasingly to church music.

In the course of 1791, Mozart was commissioned by intermediaries acting on behalf of the eccentric Count Franz von Walsegg to compose a requiem and received half the payment in advance.

During the composition process, Mozart fell seriously ill. By the time of his death on 5 December 1791, he had only written the opening movement of the Introit (Requiem aeternam) with all the orchestral and vocal parts.

Mozart's widow, Constanze Mozart, was wanted to see the incomplete work finished. She commissioned other composers, mostly Mozart's pupils, to complete it.
