Welcome to Sandwiches of History. Today, from the new banana of 1931,
we're going to be making the Banana and Liverwurst Sandwich. Now, a bunch of you sent me this post.
It was shared over on 70s Dinner Party account, specifically Instagram, and yeah. But here's the
deal. In 1931, the Gros Michel banana would have been the dominant banana. That got wiped out just
about entirely as a cash crop in the late 50s, early 60s, and replaced with the Cavendish that
we have now. Now, I did a series a while back on Gros Michel, because you can still buy them
online from Miami Fruit, and they are a bit more banana-y, a little bit more concentrated,
but I figured, you know what? I am not going to spend that kind of money for a Banana and
Liverwurst Sandwich. Let's get into it. All right. So, to Liverwurst, we're to add half a banana
and ketchup and mash that together. Yes, that's what it says to do. And lastly, salt to taste.
Then we put that appetizing concoction onto buttered bread. Yay. Okay, so before we get
into this, as you know, I recently tasted Liverwurst for the first time as part of the
Leave it to Beaver Sandwich, and found it to be not bad tasting, especially with a bunch of other
stuff in it. This one, I'm a little scared of. All right, let's give this Banana and Liverwurst
Sandwich a go. Okay, so here's the thing. Yeah, no. No, thank you. Do not want, will not eat.
Here's the thing. Liverwurst has kind of a strong flavor, and I don't want to say it's like a hot
dog, but it's got seasonings in it, right? And on the other sandwich, it was mixed with a thick
slice of tomato, mustard, and cheese, and it actually worked pretty well. Here, it's just
texturally a nightmare, because it's all mush, especially with the banana. And even if we had
used the Gros Michel banana, which is a little sweeter and more banana-y, I think that would
have been worse. I'm going to give the original Liverwurst and Banana Sandwich a 0.5, because
again, it's got nutrition, and if you had to eat something, you'd eat it. But, oh, no thank you.
Pass. Going to find something else for lunch. All right, see you tomorrow.
