A tsunami warning was issued for 3 prefectures after a quake jolted a large part of Japan's north and east at 11:15 p.m. local time on Monday.

According to authorities, the epicenter of the quake was 50 miles off the coast of Aomori prefecture at a depth of 30 miles.

East Japan Railway suspended some services in the area.

No irregularities were reported at nuclear power plants in the region, which are run by Tohoku Electric Power and Hokkaido Electric Power.

However, Tohoku Electric Power Company did say that thousands were without power.

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, with a tremor occurring at least every five minutes.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said more details will be provided shortly.
