And success comes for Savalenka in game 10, her first break of the match as she
makes things even and back on serve at 5-all. And it's just amazing in point
that the ability for Savalenka to play one of the best points that she's played
in this match to get the break back is just exceptional. And again the
recognition mid-match to realize hey I don't have to go for acute angles I kept
Oh what a point from both players, fantastic stuff. Slicing and dicing back and forth.
Yeah we didn't know who was going to end that point. A lot of talent.
Alexandrava using that slice, it's nice to see. It's just nice to see them.
Audacious and perfectly weighted that time.
What a way to seal it. Saving the best till last arena Savalenka.
Oh great play Savalenka. This is turning into a fun set. Putting on the afterburners there,
the world number one. Looking for another hold. Number five gets the set over.
Oh it's just so much maturity and confidence and
everything that goes with being the number one player in the world.
Oh well played that time. Savalenka kept a call.
Well done. Each on their horse to try to outmaneuver the other and Savalenka gets the last word.
That was a great point from Savalenka. You barely see her hit a couple slices in one rally. She likes
to usually hit one and then step up on the next ball but love that she's thinking out there trying
to throw in the variety. Oh come on.
Fabulous tennis. Perfect example of what Colin was just talking about. Just throwing in the drop
shot right away from the return. Getting it out of the center of the court to to get Jess on the
because that's Savalenka's favorite shot but just felt like left so much open. It's a great job
Savalenka going behind her down the line. No. Oh just exquisite feel. She's enjoying the competition.
It's not always easy and she knows it. Anyway you were telling us about your the longest game and
yeah well talking about games but I also had a match that I lost at nine.
Stunner. It was not bad ground throw from Andreeva but they were just
a bit shorter than usual and you could really see Savalenka. One of the best points we've seen
from Savalenka for a while. She just needs to try and find a moment of inspiration. Just
needs to get something going. She's just really
not got anything. There's not been that concern. Oh she thought that was going out. The expression
as she stood and watched was one of what have I done here. Well you've hit a winner arena but
only just to save the break or to make sure she doesn't face a break point.
Towson couldn't quite believe that she was watching that draw back down onto the line.
Where did that come from? I don't think anyone expected that.
Punchy shot into the corner. Pinpoint from Savalenka. She now has the break point.
And so quick up to this short ball as well. Jessica Begula with more at 26 on the main turn.
Oh rips it back behind. I mean we were remarking yesterday Hipper about Paolini's ability to do
that. To hit behind her opponent. She got Goff off balance but this was superb from Savalenka in
that respect. You know now I'm jealous on arena. Because I used to play a lot of drop shots. My
game style was you know to build up and be creative and and she's taking my thunder.
Much better point. Oh especially last match you know she's hit one back in volley. Exact same
Better commitment to that coming forward.
First viable threat of this match comes to Elena Repakina with break point.
Closing out the match in style arena Savalenka. That was a tough test for the world number one.
What is going on out there? Crazy point but maybe a massive one. Yeah massive luck
to be able to hit that lead court that really gets Begula to have to.
Oh and then she finds an angle and that draws a smile from Savalenka. She is loving life right now.
What a start she's made here on the Manolo Santana stadium. Four games without response.
She's now in charge of this opening set. Blinka did well finding that angle. Savalenka was almost
in the side fence wasn't she from hitting that shot to then be able to find an angle back.
Setting the odds. It's typical response from Savalenka. Really hard. That's both players
really. Oh she caught down well there though. It's a brilliant return from putting Saber but
what wonderful athleticism. Savalenka won't want to join that particular club.
Not up yet. Brilliant volley at full stretch could have made her really making her work
but still Savalenka gets back to juice. An emphatic hold there from Arena Savalenka.
Certainly Savalenka beating Tomova right now. Not a lot the Bulgarian can do just
number one. Simplifying the sport coming from side to side. Three years ago. Nice.
Yeah she's giving her plenty of time to wind up that back that forehand down the line.
Just because. Open final she was actually carrying a back injury Collins. She was made to play the
volley at that time up in the net. There was no missing from Savalenka. She just stayed put in
that backhand corner. Savalenka able to get that good drive in. Yeah and that's you know we know
we know what's going to happen. If Savalenka plays the game she plays
and she doesn't have that many unforced errors. I mean she's going to overpower.
Cracking start for Arena Savalenka. Still not happy is she?
She has very high standards. That might be a harbinger of things to come.
And they're very close as you can see. You can see them in the background here.
Oh what a shot. That is one of her best shots at forehand cross court. Won't miss that. What a rally.
What a point. You saw how determined she was when she got the break back. She wasn't going to give
up a serve that easily this time. Full of tenacity to hang on in that point. This is exceptional really
from both players and especially when you're under pressure like Savalenka is right now on the service
game down below 40. Didn't see much of that but committed to the drop shot. Pulled it off nicely.
Well she did try the drop shot didn't she against Paolini on an
Nicely put away. Very challenging game and it could be a whole different story if
Savalenka manages to... I think we've seen it in patches haven't we? It's just
it's been a long time since it's been this consistent throughout the course of a match.
Savalenka is having to pull off some remarkable shots just to stay competitive here.
And that's sometimes what you have to do though when your opponent's playing this well.
You've just got to find a way to stick in. Sumptuous touch. Coach likes it. She does too.
Produced this kind of shot. A little unlucky here because that backhand down line could
have been a winner. But here what a reflex from Savalenka. Thank you doubles all these
years that I've played doubles with. Of course Elisa Mertens.
Great response though from Marina Savalenka. Great start here from the world number one.
That's some nifty racket work. Savalenka keeps it on serve. She needs two one. Some players like it.
Well that brand of aggression is wild and lethal. It's easy to see why she's always a title contender
with those kind of strikes. Oh you don't they are often. I know but I don't have a mic
and I can like comment. I love like the whisper position. That found the line. Trying to get that
lead. Savalenka. Oh well done from Savalenka. Alexandra almost into the crowd after that.
Running all over the place. Building up her point using all the court and using that finesse.
That drop shot. Did her best to get to it. Not quite. Again out of that corner comes a very
fine strike with backhand again. Working nicely for her. Using the slice there. Keeps it so low
Ridiculous volley from Savalenka. And I was thinking that this serve and volley also
kind of a trick which makes you.
Yeah just too much height there for Mertz. Not enough length that Savalenka able to
emphatically put that away. I was about to take it out of there but smart
to let it bounce just to give herself more time especially.
Too well disguised actually. I didn't think Svitolina was that far away from that ball but
again was expecting that.
I don't think Jasko done anything different here. She played an excellent well constructed point.
Great swing volley and very well controlled from Savalenka because it was a pretty deep lob.
Sensational finish. Love that move forward. Authoritative from the world number one.
Yeah I think when she's capable and allowed to go forward she should
even do even more offensive. Yeah it's too good.
The back-to-back defeats but against Merton she did have to retire with a sickness stomach issue.
That's six love down. Oh I thought she'd missed that one. Relief from the crowd moments. Hesitation
was the machine going to call out or not? It didn't. This is definitely better. Better than
she meant in terms of the angle. She was behind the ball but she played it up above her head and
just hooked that racket. So fast getting up to that again. Maybe just using the drop shot a little
bit too often now Andreeva. She may have had to wait a moment longer but she was fully engaged in
that first point. Growing in confidence now isn't she? Savalenka and it all started with the return
of serve which dipped at the feet of Mertens and this was... It wasn't the cleanest finish but it
bounced up way out of Paolini's reach. Try to avoid seconds as much as possible. Oh she could
have done better. Nastasia she knows it. She was in between a few decisions. Should I go down the line?
Oh she dealt with that so well. It's so difficult what she's doing on top of that
because she was not even close to getting to that ball. It was kind of like a shocker response.
Fortune off the net court. I like that play though. You can see von Dreyfus were so far
behind the baseline. I think that's maybe what Savalenka's got to do a little bit more. Add that
drop shot in for 15th winner of the match so far. I mean that's just glorious right?
142 kilometers per hour as it came off a racket and as it left the strings she was screaming.
It hadn't even crossed the net yet and Savalenka knew it struck true. It's just too good.
That has got to sting for Jessica Pagula. Well it might only be the second game in the match but
it feels a big one for Blinky but that's for sure. Well she grew into the contest and Arina
Savalenka finished the match like the world number one. Brushing aside the challenge
of the Mexican. A couple of struggles in the early stages but nothing to be concerned about
on the eve of the new year. Arina Savalenka gets her season off
to a great start. 6-4, 6-love in little more than an hour. Again too short with the serve and again
it's that backhand of Savalenka's and he's doing all the damage. Look at this. Teeing off
and with precision. It's another awesome set of tennis from the world number one.
Finishing in fine style. Four backhand runners to close out the set and the top seed is a set
away from reaching her 12th WTA 1000 final. Takes the opener 6-2 in 36 minutes. That is so well done.
She didn't have a lot of time off that serve to get around to hit the forehand but
was quick enough with the feet the direction of the forehand to set up the short ball. Exceptional.
Recovered well in that point Savalenka. I mean this is just electric tennis.
Savalenka looking to slam the door in straight sets. 11 less.
Two break points for the world number one.
Found it. What a beauty and that was timely because she's been struggling a little this game.
As for the second time in 2025 she holds Jasmine Paolini to just four games
and it's another straight sets win for Savalenka.
That makes it 10 sets on the trot for Savalenka against the number one player from Italy.
It was no match up early. A three love beginning to the contest
is a runaway train as Savalenka posts a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Oh that's too good from Savalenka. Great drop shot.
Good movement just to get to that ball in the corner and nicely dealt with.
I worried for a moment that she hit the approach shot straight to Bronzetti.
A well played volley. Big service game this one for Samsonova.
They're losing seven games in a row.
But even in that point you could just see the height that Savalenka was getting on the ball.
She was happy to retreat a little bit further behind the baseline and then
wait for that right opportunity. Oh she gets it.
And what a finish to that game from Savalenka.
Believe in herself. That's the big thing.
Well to some degree home court advantage for Savalenka who has thrived in Wuhan
and a little kiss off the top of the net cord goes her way.
Lovely little change up here for Savalenka. She can see her back.
Oh what clavity of mind to play that shot.
Oh right on the line. She can't believe it.
No mistake there.
