3x 500cc Motocross World Champion Dave Thorpe invited us down to ride some Enduro dirt bikes with him at his facility in Devon. So I took my Adventure biking buddy - Dan - with me to find out who is better at Enduro, an MX rider or an Adventure Bike Rider! It turns out we were both pretty useless lol But we still had one of the most fun days you can have on two wheels!
What's up guys, I'm Matt, this is 999 Laser, and today we're in Devon, this is Dan by the way,
we're in Devon to go off-road riding, enduro riding with Dave Thorpe,
three-time 500cc world champion. As you guys know, I'm a dirt bike kid, this guy, he's an adventure
bike rider, and we're going to see today who can ride enduro better, motocross kid or an adventure
bike rider. What do you reckon Dan? I think you've won already. We're going to see anyway,
so the competition starts now.
What is your biking experience and then your motorcycle experience?
I've had my license to ride on the road for, I think, three years now.
2017 we did it. 2017 was it? Four years.
So four years, I had my on-road license. I haven't done a lot of on-road, I'm very good at
getting bikes and putting them in my shed and not using them. Off-road, I've done a lot with BMW
off-road skills, with Simon Pavey and Lou and those guys, so this is going to be very different.
I'm told that these bikes are pretty much like chalk and cheese. I ride mountain bikes,
I've ridden mountain bikes for about 10 years now. I've done a lot of that, rode all over the place
in the US and everywhere and the Alps, which I'm hoping is going to really help me today.
Max obviously knows what he's doing and I'm going to do my best. I'm not sure my best is
going to be good enough though. So yeah, it's worth mentioning, I said adventure bike rider,
but also mountain bike rider, so there's a little competition between motocross,
mountain bike and adventure bike. Why have you got to make everything a competition?
So the guys watching at home really enjoy the video. If it's just me, just you falling over,
they might enjoy that. There's a little sprinkling of competition in there. It's more enjoyable for
people watching at home. Okay, I'll do my best trying not to let you down. I'll try and uphold
the mountain biking kind of thing, whatever that is. If you're a mountain biker, you're team Dan,
you're motocross rider, team Max. And if you're a team old fart... If you're a team old fart with
a camera... You know what that is? The can of whoop-ass. You're going down boys. You are
literally going down, I'm sure. I reckon you're going down in about two minutes.
Oh, you all right dad? He's fallen off again. I haven't fallen off, I just stalled it.
Well the bike's on the floor though. Do you want some help picking that up?
You're going to hold my bike dad. All I can say is every time I stall it, my bike is not
on the floor. I bet that won't make the cut, will you Max?
How was that? Yeah, I just... He's stretching me, he's taking me far too seriously.
Phil, shall we see if they've got a lowering kit for you?
Ah, it's been a minute since I was on a four-stroke. I've stalled it twice.
Oh, this is awesome.
What's wrong boys? I don't know what... I don't know what happened. I don't know anything.
You all right? Yeah man.
Like it's just alien at the moment. Everything feels completely alien.
Which is the rough part?
I've just put... That one. Just stalled it, that's what I did.
So on a normal day, what we've just done is the bit that we evaluate people on. And then we come
back here and normally put everybody into groups. So if we was to grade them one, two and three...
What grade would Dan be?
I reckon he'd be two.
Would Max be level two as well, or would he be three?
He'd be one, wouldn't he?
Yeah, but... He would still be three?
He would be three, yeah.
Yes, I'm not... You know what? I've heard in life, average is good.
You have to give these brakes respect, don't you? Because they're very, very good.
Oh my god, don't you just?
The Honda front brake in particular is without doubt the best in the off-road world,
but you've just got to get used to it.
You lead this time, yeah?
What gear are you in, Max?
Second.
Second probably, I don't know.
Yeah. Oh, bloody hell.
I saved him! I saved the godchild of motorbikes! I saved him!
Oh no, I stalled it.
Oh, Max, you bastard! I've lost him!
Oh, I'm sorry, Dan. Sorry, Dan.
Oh, Jesus.
You've stalled it again, don't you jackass!
Ow.
Oh, that tree!
Oh, that was so close, that tree.
I'm stuck a little bit.
Oh man, I thought I was going straight for that tree.
Oh man.
You all right up there?
No, I'm all right, it's just that Max has stopped at the top because of Max
nearly hitting that tree, and now I'm struggling to get going a bit.
I don't know really what...
All right, I'll come up, hang on.
Dave's coming to save you.
It was your fault! It was like 100% your fault.
You all right?
Yeah, no, I'm fine. I thought Max was going to die there, so I've stopped here.
Okay.
And then losing my mojo a bit to roll.
Can you see that tree root there?
Yeah, yeah, that's the thing that's putting me off.
What you want to do is come from this side, so you don't touch it,
and then just roll but stay in the rut.
No engine, so you've only got your brakes, so...
So when you roll down, you don't touch that at all.
Yeah, that's what's good.
That's what would have got Max.
See, I can see, oh yeah, he was close, wasn't he?
He nearly hit that tree, and then he nearly hit that tree.
So from here, mountain bike style, clutch in and roll, no engine.
Okay.
And then as soon as you drop down, just pick up your brake gently.
I'm going to find it hard to go from here.
Yeah, you will, just roll. Here, go.
It'll just bottom out a little bit, but it'll be fine.
Okay.
Go on, just roll.
Keep going, no brakes, no brakes.
I'm literally locked up the whole way down there.
That was the most un-stylish thing.
Seriously, legs were off and everything.
That was awesome.
I had a bit of a moment, but it was Max's fault.
I'm going to put my official letter to go up into group one,
because I feel like I'm getting there.
Max, you're...
I nearly crashed into a tree big time.
Can I just ask you to tell the camera
about when you nearly fell off and I saved you?
That was the first drop, wasn't it?
Yeah, that was the first time you nearly fell off.
I don't think I had that.
What? No, you didn't.
I did have that.
I had to get the bike in position and go on the back wheel,
and then you stood up again.
Maybe that's what saved me then.
Maybe that's what saved me.
Why have you got bits of tree in your GoPro?
I have a quick score out of 10 for mountain bike versus motocross.
Let's go motocross first.
No, no, motocross was brave, and he almost collected a tree.
I can see the skids all the way up to it,
and mountain bike, he was a bit hesitant,
but once he did it, he was away.
I think Max probably scared him when he nearly hit the tree.
It's probably what...
Well, the first tree I was okay.
It was the second tree that scared me.
Yeah, no, no, no, they've done well.
They're both eight and a half out of 10, definitely.
Yes, I'll take that.
Get in, get in.
I've never ridden one of these in my life.
Seriously.
You can say he's never ridden one,
but he's been on 14 BMW GS adventure bikes in the last two weeks.
It's like the epitome of exaggeration.
I've been on four courses over the four years, one a year,
for two days riding once a year.
They are very different to the old GSs.
Keep pulling the clutch thinking it's the back brake.
What's that?
Your lack of ABS.
Oh, yeah, the ABS doesn't work.
My ABS is broken.
I need to talk to Dave about that.
So you're the mountain biker.
You've now got an engine.
So fitness-wise, you should be good all day.
How are you feeling?
Well, I don't think it's that simple.
No, it's not that simple, is it?
So are you tired?
I'm not tired.
I mean, cardiovascularly, I feel absolutely fine.
But obviously, it's a physical workout, isn't it?
And trying to do this helmet, I'm just like a krypton factor.
Are you having a fix, Dave?
I think he's calling you slow, mate.
Yep.
Oh, Danny's down.
He's lost.
How did you get that?
I'm absolutely fine.
But it was my GoPro got caught in the hedge.
I couldn't get my head out.
I'm so annoyed.
I'm doing all right.
I was loving it.
I was like, OK, I'm starting to understand this.
Do you know what it is?
I've just ridden mountain bikes for so long.
And so I can't get the...
There's loads of things to do with your hands.
I'm just used to holding on and one finger braking.
And all of a sudden, I've got to do this and clutch.
Can I just ask a question?
Were you behind, Dan?
Were you behind, Dan, Dave?
So we've actually got three cameras, Dan.
So we'll be the judge of what you did.
I was so excited when he was going,
yeah, boy, you're doing all right, Dan.
You're doing all right.
I was like, yeah, come on.
The joy in Max's voice when he's, yeah, Dan's down.
The thing was, though, my ability level was like this.
My confidence level was going like this.
And I was getting more confident, but wasn't getting more able.
So this piece of beautiful Devonshire wilderness
is one of the awesome locations
that Dave Thorpe's Honda Off-Road Centre has access to.
As you can see, there's almost endless trails to enjoy here
and sections to challenge any rider.
As you can tell from this video,
we're just a pair of plonkers messing about in the woods.
My only enduro experience was a mad couple of days
in Bulgaria a few years ago.
And by no means are we actually any good,
but it's all about the experience here.
And Dave is determined to get as many people as possible
on board and loving dirt bikes.
In case you were wondering
how we are talking to each other whilst on the go,
we are using the PakTorque comms system
from our friends at Cardo.
I've put a link in the description
if you want to check them out.
Swatted a fly, mate.
Say again?
Swatted a fly.
I was flying that and a fly actually bit me on my hand.
I was like flying.
I was like, oh!
That was a sexual shot, Dave.
Did you see the drone?
No.
It was quite close to you.
Was it?
Yeah, about two meters off your shoulder.
Was it?
Yeah.
Right, so halfway through the day now.
It's just rained a little bit,
but sun's back out.
About to head back out over to the other side of the valley,
I guess.
Dave, how are we doing so far?
No, we're going all right.
We're going all right.
I mean, this side is a little bit more tree covering in places
and the tree roots were quite slippery, weren't they, really?
This side, where we're going to go first part,
is a bit more open.
Vegetation is still going to be in.
There's going to be some ruts out there,
but there's not half as many tree roots.
Do we think that rain is going to cause us any problems out there
or a few more puddles for you to fall in, Dan?
Let's do it then.
There's a lake down there.
Oh, my God.
Sorry, Dan.
Oh, do you know what?
Why are you always in my way?
Oh, God.
I screwed the push on that one.
Wait there, Max.
I'm coming.
Actually, I'm not coming.
I don't know what to do with my bike.
Can I slow it down?
You might have to slow it down.
Let's get it in that rut so it's easier if he digs it on it.
It's bloody slippy.
It's so slippy.
Oh, I'm getting rained on.
Jesus Christ.
It was going so well until it wasn't.
Oh, are you going back down?
Not intentionally.
Take two.
Well done, Dan.
Careful, Dad.
I can't breathe.
I've never been so frustrated in my life.
There's no way we're getting up.
It gets harder there?
Gets harder up here?
Okay.
Dan, we'd best turn around, mate.
Dave said we wanted to get up that bit.
I'm getting out of the way, Dan.
I'm just coming down here.
Oh, I'm gutted.
I'm gutted.
I couldn't get out of it.
And Max is on the pike.
All right.
Oh, I want to do it again.
I'm so frustrated.
What you could have done with a little bit more momentum and
more weight to the back.
So you're just forcing it to drive.
Yeah.
With less roll.
The faster you go and the more speed you're carrying, the easier it is, isn't it?
Speed is your friend.
So that's a day riding Enduro with three-time 500cc world champion Dave Thorne.
We just about had time at the end of the day
for a couple more drone shots before rain put an early end to the play.
Stay tuned to find out who's taken victory.
Team Dirt Bike or Team Adventure Bike.
That's cool, that.
And it's showing the speed of it as well.
What are you filming him?
1080 down north.
That's cool.
That looks so quick.
It's proper rain that is now, isn't it?
Proper rain.
Right then.
So we just wrapped up the day.
Driven over to the workshop here.
Dave, give us each a score out of one to Billy Bolt.
Where abouts are we going after our day Enduro riding?
Well, I think...
We're probably 7 out of 10, both of you.
I think you've had a good go, both of you.
Difficult conditions, man.
It's been dry for a very long time and then last night's rain made it a bit touchy.
Yeah, especially this afternoon after that rain.
Yeah, but no, I think you've done well.
The whole place is about an experience and I think you've had that experience today.
Sampled a bit of Somerset soil.
In the face.
Do you think it's easier to teach a mountain biker to ride the riding style that you're
supposed to in that setting or a motocross rider?
We were talking about earlier, a motocross rider is a bit heavier on the throttle.
A mountain biker relies on gravity a bit more.
Who do you think it's...
What kind of guide do you think is easier to teach?
I think in both disciplines, motocross and mountain biking,
there is something that they bring to the table for the trail riding.
But it's the ability, I think, to listen and feel what's happening with the bike.
It's having a feel of the throttle because, you know, enduro is about finding traction,
finding grip and being able to think on your feet because you don't know what's coming up next.
So, whereas I know every inch of that venue, you guys, you turn and...
Oh, there's a tree.
Yeah, and then you've got to have that ability to carry the momentum and just find your way
through. But I think you did really well, to be fair.
And if you have to give us the most improved and best overall...
We need a conclusion for the video.
You've got the furthest up the hill.
But that's not fair, is it? Because the other hill that Dave rode Max's bike up, I rode up.
So, you know...
Yeah, yeah, there's winners and losers both ways there,
isn't there? So, I still think it's a draw, really. I think you both did really well.
All right, there we have it then.
Dave, thanks for having us down today, mate.
Dan, thanks for coming along and being some...
Oh, thanks for having me. It was awesome. Absolutely loved it.
Comic relief.
Guys, thanks for watching. Remember to like, share and subscribe if you enjoyed this video
and if you want to see more. Until next time, I'm Max, that's Dan and that's Dave.
We'll see you at the track.
