Chateau-sur-Mer, a name meaning "castle by the sea,"was a landmark that
ushered in the Gilded Age of Newport, Rhode Island. It was built in 1852 for
William Shepard Wetmore, a wealthy merchant from the China trade, as an
Italianate villa. The lavish home became famous for its grand parties, including one in 1857 attended by over 3,000 guests.
