Welcome to booze on the rocks.
My name is David Edwards, and it's great to have you here today.
We're going to make an orange drop.
Now this is a variation of the classic lemon drop.
And I use that as the template to create this cocktail.
What it doesn't have is any lemon notes at all, but it does have bold orange
flavors that are going to be in your face.
So orange is not your preferred flavor of cocktail, especially things that
are going to be heavily orange.
This may not be for you, but it's worth testing and trying out.
And then modifying it to come up with a fantastic cocktail that you like.
So please leave a comment down below.
Tell me what you would do to modify this cocktail to suit your personal
taste, because I'd love to see the discussion happen in the comments.
Now, as I said, this is just basically orange and in your flavor.
So one of the things you're going to use for this is some fresh orange juice.
Always use fresh orange where possible.
I've got some nice, sad looking oranges here.
You're going to need a little bit of an orange liqueur.
Now I'm using a little bit of triple sec.
You could use a Cointreau if you wanted.
Um, if you use something like a dry curacao, you will get the orange
flavors, but you'll lose some of the sweetness.
So keep that in mind and let me know what you think.
You also need your favorite vodka.
Now I'm using a little bit of polar ice vodka from Alberta.
Um, any one of these ingredients are subject to change based
on your personal preferences.
Now we are going to prep our orange juice first, but before we do that, we
are going to cut our orange in half and then we'll cut a slice out of
the orange for the garnish.
We'll then squeeze that into another glass just to have that prepped and ready to go.
Once you've done this, put this off to the side and to make sure you keep that
last flattened section of orange, because what we're going to do is we're going
to use this to now rim the edge of the glass and we'll run the pulp along the
edge of the glass and then dip that into some sugar.
Now, the good thing about that technique and using the orange in that fashion is
you're not wasting another orange.
Plus what you get is a little bit of the orange favor on the room as well.
So you're going to put that off to the side and you're going to
grab your shaking glass.
I'm using a standard Boston glass, 16 ounces, and we're going to start with
throwing stuff on the edge there, but grab yourself your vodka, and we're
going to use two ounces or 60 milliliters.
Your second ingredient is going to be your triple sec.
Having said that, like I said, you could use a Cointreau or a dry Curacao or
something, just remember whatever you use, um, the alcohol volume in that
specific look here could throw off your flavor slightly.
So just something to think about.
Anyways, you're going to use a total of one ounce or 30 milliliters.
Your third ingredient is going to be your orange juice.
Now I use naval oranges here.
You could use any other type of oranges.
And I'm curious to know what you prefer for flavor and how
it would affect the cocktail.
So please leave that comment below.
But what I am going to do is I'm going to create a 50 50 ratio because what I have
here right now is three ounces of spirits and liqueurs for a total of three ounces
or 90 mils, but I'm going to use that same amount of orange juice.
So your next step is to grab a good scoop full of ice.
So you want to fill the glass about two thirds of the way with ice or all the way
because it's already in there now.
And you want to make sure you get a good seal, give it a flick and shake it
hard with a smile, of course, and you're going to shake that for anywhere between
eight to 10 seconds, but you're going to pop that off with the strength of a
thousand oranges, put that off to the side, and you're going to serve this in.
As I said, you're already dressed martini glass.
Now I am going to find strain this to keep some of the pulp out.
You don't have to totally up to you.
Now, one of the things to remember is that one of these martini glasses is
generally good five ounces, 150 mils.
So you're going to have a slight little bit left over for yourself.
Now we are going to garnish this with half of that orange wheel.
We'll just put it on like, so, and here you have an orange drop.
Absolutely.
Gorgeous.
Simple.
Take a look at that color.
That is a beautiful orange with a gorgeous little white room.
Of course, you've got the orange piece here.
Oh yeah.
That is really good.
You get the orange juice, you get the triple sec is just underpins it.
And you get a little bit of the vodka.
It's not overpowering in any way, but the flavor is fantastic.
So if you love orange cocktails, this is definitely your thing.
If you like lemon drop style cocktail, absolutely.
This is easily an eight and a half out of 10 for looks and an eight and a
half out of nine out of 10 for flavor.
And you know what, a recipe cards right here and more recipes
like that directly afterwards.
