Struggle to turn with driver? Tight hips or a senior golf swing that just won’t rotate? In this video I’ll show you the easiest driver swing you’ve never been taught – by dropping the lead foot back, presetting hip depth and spine tilt, and using a simple lever-system wrist move to create effortless speed. You’ll learn how to hit high draws, swing from the inside, and hit up on the ball without needing a big turn or extra flexibility.
Perfect for senior golfers, players with stiff hips or back issues, and anyone whose driver feels nothing like their irons.
You have never seen this lesson before in your life, but it is going to transform the way you
hit your driver. Now this video is geared towards golfers who have tight hips or especially golfers
who are more senior golfers who can't rotate as much as they used to. Now the industry gets you
hitting driver like this, especially if you're more of a senior golfer. They'll get you to set
up to the golf ball, drop your trail foot back. Now here's the thing, let's run with this. The feet
when I do this now point to the right. The knees and the hips now point to the right. Now the
reason they get you to do this is because they say, right, this will help you get more hand depth
in the backswing. And here's the thing, that is 100% correct. It will give you more hand depth in
the backswing. But is golf about how much hand depth you can generate or is it about the moment
you strike the ball, which is impact? It's the latter. So the issue with this method is now as
you come down, you are going to be in a situation to where you've just made rotation harder for
yourself. Right now your hips are already preset closed, meaning that you have to now turn way
more on the way down to just get into a decent impact position. Otherwise it'll look like this
and you'll just use your arms and buckle up like that. And that is not a way to be a consistent
golfer. So I understand what that method is trying to do, but it's flawed because it neglects the
position that actually matters in the golf swing, which is impact. So here's what I'm going to get
you to do instead. Get set up to the golf ball normally, take your left foot and drop it back.
Now, the more you drop that left foot back, two things are happening. Number one, the more my left
hip goes deeper, we get hip depth or hip depth is therefore the key component of rotation. So it
precepts us with more rotation at set up. Now my arms have space to actually move. So if I just
pitch one away here, again, this is just the driver, but if I just pitch one away, you can see
at least now I can start to rotate my arms around my body and I didn't even turn there. So now I
have space to release the club to start to generate maximum speed, but also maximum consistency. So
let's say as a really good reference point, you go from the middle of your trail foot. You're
going to put your left toe roughly in line with that, your left big toe. The second thing you're
then going to do is you're then going to flare that foot out a little bit more again, just to
promote a little bit of rotation. Anything we can get, let's try and maximize that out. The most
common issue I see once I see golfers do that is their weight goes onto their back foot. We still
want to keep our hips forwards so we can have spine tilt. So I actually want you, and again,
this goes against what the industry says, I want you to feel like you're about 60% of your weight,
even 70% of your weight on your left leg. I know it goes against the industry, but bear with me.
From here you can see feet, knees, hips are all positioned left. This is where we have to create
separation. Now most tour pros do this in the downswing, but they do movements like that which
are just completely unrealistic. So the way that we're going to create that separation that's set
up for you is we're going to take your shoulders, keeping your feet and lower body here, and we are
going to point them to the right of your target. So to the right. Now if I use the hotel in the
distance there from the downwind view, there's two big spikes. I'm going to point my feet left
of the hotel and I'm going to point my shoulders at that spike on the right. Now you can see when
I do that here, where are my shoulders pointing? To the right. But where are my arms? My right arm
is lower than my left. Now what does this preset? The lower body presets rotation for me to be able
to move into to release the club. Holders control swing direction and also they're going to help us
angle of attack. So the more I move my swing direction to the right, the more I'm going to
be able to hit up on the ball. You get everything for free and you still have the ability to rotate
because you've got everything in a great spot right here. Let me hit you a shot and then I'm
going to show you a little cheat code to get into this good position that looks like this.
So you can see there I felt like I hardly turned my body, but I still hit up on the ball. That ball
still probably gone 250 yards and I didn't even feel like I put any effort into it. So now let's
talk about how we can get a cheat code to get our arms and shoulders in the correct position.
So if I set my lower body first, get that in a good spot and then from here I go left arm out
with the palm pointing down to the ground, right palm pointing up to the sky. Notice what this does.
If I keep my hips forwards it gives me tilt, so that's going to help me hit up, but it pulls the
left shoulder forwards and it pulls the right shoulder back, creating maybe a hair stronger
grip which will help you grip it in the fingers and get the heel pad on top, but it'll get the
shoulders pointing more to the right. The key thing you've just got to make sure you don't do
is pull those hips back, keep those hips forwards. So now I can just return the club back to this
position and then just let it go all the way through and I'm going to hit high draws from this
point. So let's now state the obvious. Obviously with this change our swing is going to get shorter
because again when I open my hips up at setup I am creating an inhibitor for the backswing. Is that
the end of the world? No, because that's going to allow us to do our golden rule which is have more
control over impact. So what's the factor we can use to add that oomph into your swing? Add that
speed. It's about using the most powerful speed source we have in the swing which is our lever
system. So the lever system is the arms, the wrists and the club. Now look at all great golfers, they
control their lever system amazingly. It's how they control the face, it's how they generate speed
and the key principle we have to remember here is we are not trying to move the body fast. The only
thing that needs to move fast in our swing and the only thing that matters if it moves fast in our
swing is the club head. If I was to set up here with my lever system this would be what it looks
like. With my arms in this position I'm naturally going to be gripping the club well and I'm
naturally going to have my shoulders and forearms in the correct spot. If I learn to create a little
bit of hinge in the backswing and then I learn to unleash that hinge that's your speed source. So in
simple terms is I create some hinge here and then I throw that hinge out. Now I have three keys for
my lever system. Key number one is you have to have relaxed wrists. If you want to get speed into the
club head you have to have your wrists relaxed. This is how we can get it setting and unleashing.
If you have your wrist super tight it's just going to stiffen everything up. So you need to relax it
down. Now like I said because we've got this grip in the right spot that'll be able to help us relax
everything down. However if you need an exercise to help you do it do the less so drill. Hold the club
up in front of you and just do small circles, only small circles. The thing with this is this will
teach you how to grip it light enough to have the ability to do these small circles. It's really
tough to do them if your arms are stiff you feel like your whole body's moving. So just move your
wrists get small circles in there and it also teaches you how to grip it tight enough to have
control over the club. Now I can start to generate some speed and you can see there that is some real
flash speed that I can create. Now key number two and key number three are how we move the left wrist
and the right wrist. So to me the left wrist is the power the right wrist is the club face. If I
was to get set up from this angle and then just stand up with my left wrist that's kind of my
starting position right there, a tiny bit of set. In the backswing all I'm going to do is bring my
thumb towards me or thumb to the sky and in the downswing I'm going to throw it away. That motion
when you couple in the fact that we're tilted and we're moving that's what creates a huge amount
of speed. Now the trail wrist it does it slightly differently. It starts in this position it sets
back on itself and it releases it out. So if I do that here it sets back and it releases. So you can
see it still generates speed, not as much, but it helps us control the club face. So the key that I want
you to have for the backswing is I want you to think thumb up, wrist back. Do that here with a little
bit of chest turn, thumb up, wrist back, club sets up on plane, we control the face. We want to go good
grip, thumb up, right wrist back. Good grip, thumb up, right wrist back. Now notice how I'm letting that
left knee come across. That's absolutely fine, that'll give you a little bit extra turn. I'm not trying to
keep it solid there, I'm just going thumb up, right wrist back. So now if I do that here, but watch this.
You can see I can generate huge amounts of speed and I felt like it was so easy to get back to this
impact position. So because we are using the levers, our wrists are relaxed, we can create that angle
and then we can release it. So get rid of the golf ball, just place the tee in the ground, get your
set up right. Set up's the most important bit and then you're going to go thumb up, thumb down and hit
the tee and with the trail hand you're going to go right wrist back, hit the tee. So you feel like
you're throwing your angles out. Again, this throwing of the angles out gets the speed to the club head
which is the only thing that matters. So if I show you what this looks like now, I'm going to focus on
hitting the tee. I go here, I've got my good set up, my shoulders are closed, my feet are open, my hips are
open at set up. I'm going to go thumb up, wrist back, release it out. Now let me hit this shot and I'm
going to give you a bonus drill. So obviously the key thing we have to accept here is we need to try
and optimize our impact out to get the most accuracy and the most distance and our setup position is
going to help us do that. But here's a drill to ensure we hit from the inside so we can get every
single yard out of your club head speed. So what I want you to do is grab a limo stick and I want you
to place it in line with the golf ball just like so. So you can see I've just laid it on the ground.
Now pull that end up here so it's about a foot above the golf ball and then you're going to place
this alignment stick in the ground just like so. So what this does is it creates a channel for me to
hit from the inside. It's going to force you to feel like you return your shoulders back to the
same position it started in and then from there you can release your wrists out, get all
the energy into the club head, hit from the inside. Now I already know what your question is going to be
I'm hitting in mats, I'm hitting indoors, how do I use this drill because I can't stick it in the
ground? Well you can do two things. Number one you can use a basket to hold it in place or if you want
to invest a little bit of money there is I think it's about 80 pounds, 80 dollars, something like that.
There's a training aid called the swing plate it's just a metal plate with a mechanical arm.
You can buy one of those and it will hold the alignment stick in place for you. So if I do this here
I'm going to close the shoulders off. So look feet and hips are pointing left, my hips are forwards, my
shoulders are closed, left thumb up, right wrist back, release it, avoid the alignment stick, swing all the
way through. Now if you want to learn more about how you can build an impact based goal swing, which
