The 50's are one of the most well known periods in history for various reasons
and one of them is fashion.
And every time I hear people talk about the female fashion of the 50's
they always mention red, black, light blue or pink dresses
with white places and tights of the same color or some platforms
while it was not like that.
When I was little I used to get confused with this too
and it's because there's a lot of fiction that gives us that erroneous style
so if you want to know how it was really
keep watching this video
and let's start.
In the 50's we find a return to the old and femininity in fashion
something that we appreciate in the great transition of the style of the war years
to this new decade.
Despite this, we also find various novelties that allowed an early revolution
but first I will talk about the return to the old with the ideal body.
And what old thing do we find in the ideal body?
Well, you may not have seen in movies based on the Victorian era
female figures that look a lot like a sand clock
or you don't remember that sand clock that was so well known in the Edwardian era
about which I was talking to you in the video of the fashion of the beginning of the 20th century
well that figure came back.
They all wanted to have that kind of body
even having big breasts and high points became popular.
At that time everything was having voluptuous hips and tight waist
they didn't want to be skinny but have the sand clock.
We appreciate this ideal body in many icons of the time
and also in our well-known Barbie
which was released in March 1959
even in the Disney princesses of the 50's
Cinderella and Aurora
that we even appreciate the new look in their costumes
but later I will review the new look.
To achieve this ideal body
there was one that was all in one
including the pointed shape that they all wanted
or they could simply use the popular bras that gave them that figure in the breasts.
We even found many ads to lose or gain weight
so that they had that ideal body
and of course, not everything was the sand clock figure
but there was also a thin and square style
but it was the one that gave some garments of greater comfort.
In the 50's there was the makeup style that we know today.
So, women left their eyebrows thick
shadows of different pastel shades were applied
the popular cat eye eyeliner was made
that we love so much today
blushes of a very light red were applied
and red, coral or pink lips were painted.
The popular hair was again the short
and it was fixed in different ways
like the Italian cut, pixie, bouffant and others.
Even those who had the longest hair were made horse tails
something that was especially seen in teenagers and young adults.
The small hats were so fashionable
that they perfectly combined with short or curled hair
or also, depending on the occasion, they could use ribbons.
It was also common to wear gloves
but what you will see the most when you research about the fashion of the 50's
will be those huge skirts that are so famous.
Now, let's review my video about the fashion of the 40's.
So, there we find Christian Dior
the creator of the new look in 1947
with that return to femininity after the years of war
and who transformed Paris into the center of fashion
with the belt and that huge skirt.
Now that I mention Christian Dior, a French designer
I'm talking about the post-war world.
Then we come to the new look.
This name was attributed to the first collection of the fashion house of Christian Dior
in February 1947
and this was a great revolution.
It became a desired style.
He was the key to the fashion of the 50's
despite the comfort of the fashion of the 40's.
And obviously, seeing those wide skirts
after so much rationing by the war
they used a lot of fabric again.
And if we look closely at these skirts
there is a similarity with the styles of the 1840's, 1850's and 1860's.
Even if we go back
we also see the similarity with the 1830's
being each of these decades different in its size and shape, clearly.
But still, this is another example that it was a return to the old.
And we see that Dior was inspired by those times.
The new look began to be propagated and imitated by others
so that it was affordable for any woman of any age or social class.
It could be found in catalogs, in different stores of any country
in different colors, designs
and even with patterns of flowers, moons, squares, etc.
Despite the fact that the new look was a great sensation
really very few could buy it in real.
And one of them was the Argentine Eva Perón
who received a complete change of look by Christian.
And in fact, Dior stated that Eva Perón was the only queen she wore.
Now, do you find familiar the style of the costumes of the Disney princesses that I mentioned?
That although they are not historically accurate with the times they wanted to represent
they do go hand in hand with the 50's.
Another style that we find is that of the designer Coco Chanel
the woman who contributed enormously in the comfort of the fashion of the 20's.
Chanel did not like the new look practically for what I said before
from that to the past, then there was the discomfort
and finally, she created much more comfortable designs
elegant, practical and it was not necessary to have the waist of the wasp.
As well as the new look were imitated
and this style was also loved.
So now we find three styles
the new look with wide skirts and small waist
the Chanel look that gave the body a very elegant square style
and another that also molded the sandglass
but with the skirt being tight.
Several got bored of the huge skirts
so this last style was the favorite of many
as well as Marilyn Monroe's.
On the other hand, we find various styles of heels and shoes
and even saddle shoes
the favorites of the adolescents.
Small heels called kitten heel shoes also became popular.
In this decade there were also more casual styles with pants, capris
and even sometimes shorts.
This is the first time we see women wearing them with much more constancy
it was already becoming something normal.
As Paris became the capital of fashion again
it was the great inspiration in art
and this can be seen in several movies of the time
as in Funny Face being Audrey Hepburn the protagonist.
In fashion you can also see the great inspiration.
So we see that berets or French berets became popular
and we also find skirts with puddles or with the Eiffel Tower in the youngest
and although there are currently costumes that have skirts with puddles
many of those representations are historically incorrect.
Apart from everything I just mentioned
we also find another designer called Hubert de Givenchy
a French designer who created both high-cut lines and ready-to-wear.
His contribution to fashion is unforgettable
and his designs were so unique that he even created perfume lines that he associated with celebrities.
One of them was actress Audrey Hepburn
his muse and great friend
being the creator of several of the beautiful costumes that Audrey used in his films.
Although in the 50s everything was still based on the rules
we can see that teenagers began to reveal themselves and show their identity
something that started as late 40s.
Among them, already in the middle of the decade
there was the great popularity of rock and roll
with Elvis Presley being his biggest icon.
The girls followed the styles but in a more youthful way
when they went to school they wore their saddle shoes
some the wide skirt and others the tight skirt with a cardigan.
In fact, the 1978 film Brillantina
which was set in the 50s
shows us how they dressed.
They also wore wide blue jeans that bent below.
And let's say that among teenagers there were the normal
and the rebels
and the normal would follow the rules
but the groups of rebellious young people did the opposite.
In the 1955 film Rebels Without a Cause
starring James Dean
we see that teenage rebellion that marked a decade
even James Dean became an icon of juvenile rebellion
thanks to this film.
We also find the Teddy Boys and the Teddy Girls
These rebellious groups, no one wanted to mess with them
were inspired by the masculine style of the Edwardian era
giving it a more modern and revolutionary touch.
The Teddy Girls also dressed like this
but combining these outfits with a slightly more feminine style
and then we see how different styles emerge.
And who were the Big Nicks?
Well, first of all, Big Nick was a way to call the Beat generation
a group of writers who had their own anti-cultural,
anti-materialist, anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian philosophy
and similar ideas
and they had a life style different from the others
they used to meet in clubs or cafes
they were jazz fans and recited poems.
In the women we find another style that we also know
the French berets, the black pants and the long sleeve sweater
of the same color or stripes
as well as the main outfit of Audrey Hepburn
in the movie Funny Face
or if you want a more modern example
we also find a Big Nick in the Disney movie Goofy 2
The Big Nicks were a prelude to the Mods and Hippies of the 60s
Some of the beauty icons are the best known actresses of all time
but there were also other actresses and models who were super famous
so I will be mentioning several figures
First we have our beloved Marilyn Monroe
Audrey Hepburn, one of my favorite actresses
and the only one who inspired and was admired
not for her body but for her inner qualities
Elizabeth Taylor
Jane Mansfield
The actress Grace Kelly
Later the Princess of Monaco
Maria Felix, who was also an icon of the last decade
Debbie Reynolds, the protagonist of the movie Singin' in the Rain
and the mother of Carrie Fisher
the well-known Princess Leia
Sophia Loren
Dovima, one of the most famous models of the 50s
Jane Russell
Brigitte Bardot
The models Lisa Fonseriff, Jan Pachet, Dorian Lee, among others
Well, I hope you enjoyed this video
and see you in the 60s
a decade full of various revolutions and changes that you can't miss
Bye!
