Now on the verge of his 100th birthday did bend has been
spreading joy for longer than most of us can remember why
look so awfully tragic.
Dancing and fat falling his way into our hearts.
From his breakthrough role on Broadway in bye bye birdie to
the last year's Coldplay video, the iconic entertainer is still
going strong.
Well hello Sir, my man.
Haha good to see you were a couple of survivors tell me
about it and now he's letting us in on some of his secrets
for living to 100 what's the one question that people ask
you the most as you're approaching, you know this this
centennial mark why you're still walking around and is one.
The answer never stop singing singing is the best thing you
can do for yourself. Usually I wake up with a an old tune
going through my head, they call her frivolous out a
peculiar sort of a gal a wild sort of devil. Dead on the
level with my old pal.
The big band I should bring in his unique brand of physical
comedy into America's living.
How did that come about in one rehearsal. I came in and just
fell over it for fun and Carl liked it and left it in.
But it was a call from Walt Disney that landed Van Dyke the
role that would make him unforgettable 2 generations of
kids and adults alike Bert in Mary Poppins.
Singing with Julie Andrews even partner with animated penguins.
I had to have the animators next to me all the time so
make where they were
so we're shooting over and over and over again so I got it just
right then another kid's classic chitty chitty bank.
What was difficult with the opening of the city.
The old bamboo.
Oh my God, you know at the end everybody has to jump over that
bamboo
every day one kid would miss the take you see is take 26.
Wow and out of that
doing that movie.
Is it true you could have almost become James Bond.
I almost did his performance in Chitty led the film's producer
to think of him as a possible successor to Sean Connery.
We brought it came to me is it would you like to be bombed.
And I said have you heard my baby sex and
it says he still regrets turning down the chance to be
double 0, 7, but not much else.
The the the at 91 he and I were dancing in his backyard.
Today, he's still making sweet harmonies with his a cappella
group, the Fantastics and with his beloved wife, Arlene she
gives me. But we saying you know we dance and she just
gives me a teenager. How has he changed your life. Oh my God.
He's totally changed.
I'm always on the verge of tears because he's just like
the greatest human being ever and
you just change the way look at life.
And guess what he may not be done yet.
You don't stop you're not going to retire are you I don't want
to I mean it's my hobby is my life, I love it.
I'm looking for work right now.
What haven't you done that you'd like to do what role I
want to be screwed.
Always want to play screwed and I could do it, it's just
November, I still got time.
What a character he would he would although he's somebody
who is about as the opposite of my possible. I got to say I
think that's the appeal because he's tried a number of
different a little more serious and people just in light of
they were great great performances, but people love
Dick and I love that he wakes up in the morning with the song
in his head and by the way still goes to the gym 3 times
a week, I can tell you that whole like Fred Astaire thing
yeah, he was amazing and what he wrote the book because we'd
like to know what his rules are I know that probably get a
smucker's jar. We're going to have more of our conversation
ahead in the 3rd hour by the way 100 rules for living to
100 is out today, I read it, it's a terrific was a great
sit down with that.
