Castle Tioram was once the stronghold of the Macdonalds of Clanranald, built in the 14th century by Amy MacRuari – mother of Ranald, progenitor of Clanranald.

Clanranald were involved in the struggle between the Crown and the Lords of the Isles with various Scottish kings trying to usurp the power and influence of the Lordship of the isles.

The Clanranald motto “My hope is constant in thee” were words spoken by Robert the Bruce to Angus Og Macdonald on the battlefield of Bannockburn.

The Macdonalds of Clanranald fought through many political arenas, joining the Montrose cause in support of King Charles I against the Covenanter Marquess of Argyll. They joined Jacobite forces in 1715 where the 14th chief, Allan, died at the battle of Sheriffmuir - but not before ordering that Tioram be put to the torch to stop it being used by the enemy.

The castle has stood as a ruin ever since.

Castle Tioram appeared in the film Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, and the surrounding area appeared in the film Supergirl.
The castle overlooks the popular holiday island of Eilean Shona, owned by Vanessa Branson.
