CAERLAVEROCK CASTLE | A FORTRESS Built to PROTECT the BORDERLANDS

Caerlaverock Castle, located near the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, is one of Scotland’s most distinctive medieval fortresses. Built in the late 13th century by the powerful Maxwell family, the castle is famed for its unique triangular design, complete with massive curtain walls, corner towers, and a wide water-filled moat.

Its strategic position close to the English border made it a key stronghold during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Caerlaverock is particularly renowned for the siege of 1300, when King Edward I of England led a large army against the castle, an event vividly recorded in a contemporary siege poem.

Despite its strong defences, the castle changed hands several times over the centuries and was later damaged during the conflicts of the 17th century.
