The government is presenting a new plan for returning to Syria
Syria has had a new government for a year now and the government wants to be able to deport convicted criminals back to Syria
and increase aid to Syria which has been affected by war for a longer period
We are major donors to Syria's humanitarian system and it's about everything from food on the table
Rent water roof over the head that kind of efforts
We are now also moving towards what is called the Nexus in the bison language
The thing that is between my long-term development stock and only humanitarian efforts
It can involve repairing water pipes for example
Just water is a sector that we on the Swedish side have identified and consider particularly prioritized
So we want to help the Syrian civilian population
We have also talked a lot with minorities the situation of minorities in Syria
We met several bishops and priests from the Christian group in Syria
What can we do to support these groups especially to become an included group in the new Syrian society
Sweden's migration minister Johan Forssell has joined forces with the minister for aid and foreign trade
Benjamin Dösa made the first Swedish ministerial visit to Syria since 2009
The event marks a new step in the contact between the countries and according to Forssell Syria is
It faces both huge challenges and cautious signs of recovery
There is a lot of uncertainty and perhaps the enthusiasm that existed a year ago has somewhat subsided
Men it is also a country that is actually finally in debt here under the terrifying Assad regime
It is a country where this Sednaya prison has been closed which was the home of
Thousands and thousands of political prisoners
We also see that it is a country that people actually choose to return to voluntarily
There are large groups several hundred thousand actually in the region who have chosen to voluntarily return
So there are also many bright spots and a lot of positive aspects
But I don't think anyone can say exactly where Syria will be in five years
The purpose of the visit was to discuss how Sweden and Syria can cooperate in the future
Among other things about the return and enforcement of deportations for individuals convicted of crimes in Sweden
We have been very clear in our calls with the Syrian government that we would like to cooperate
We are fully committed to facilitating a better situation in Syria across a wide range of areas
We also have our own interests
And another very important issue is that these 128 people who have been convicted of crimes in Sweden
To be able to carry out these deportations
And it is ultimately about giving these crime victims justice
It's about a rape victim not having to encounter their perpetrator on the street
But it's also about standing up for all the decent people from Syria
For it's the vast majority of people who don't commit crimes
They work they learn Swedish they do the right thing for themselves
Don't let them have to experience being combed through a fine-toothed comb
The government emphasizes that Swedish aid will not be given without conditions
The Syrian government is expected to act to protect minorities and respect human rights
Sweden and other European countries will watch how Syria handles these issues
We would see this type of violence spread and become even worse
So these types of sanctions will partly remain from the countries that still have them
They can be reintroduced from the European side
They have a very strong self-interest in actually meeting the expectations of the international community towards the Syrian government
