Kirk Wolf
Drake,
Drake,
Kirk
Doc?
Doc Dale
Doc
我是Kirk Wolf
Kirk
Doc Dale
Doc
Kirk
Kirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Rose
Rose
Rose
So we're shopping for a house
at a shipping container yard
Who does that?
You've got quite an array
of pricing on them
Alright
Kirk has talked about
using shipping containers
for homes
for as long as I've known him
It's just something
he's always been interested in
How tall are these?
These are 9'6 high
I need shipping containers
20ft long
8ft wide
8.5ft tall
These are our 40ft containers
If you like yellow
we've got your color
So John
these are your 20ft then
Yes sir
The upper end of used containers
Oh, I like that
20ft long
8'6 high
7ft 8in wide on the inside
Master
I like it
It looks good
What do you think?
I can picture it
Well, I need 3 similar containers
What do those run?
Well, one like this is $2,100
Sounds good
I'll take 3 of them
Alright, sounds good
Thanks sir
With Doc's dirt work now complete
the build site is leveled
and ready for a home
Here they come, any second
I can hear them coming out
The containers are arriving
and we can hear them
coming up the mountain
Look, look, look
On a remote ridgetop
in the Oklahoma Ozarks
Kirk Wolf is dropping
3 shipping containers
onto his 2 1⁄2 acre build site
Here they come, any second
I can hear them coming out
Look at them
The moment they crested
around that corner
it's very surreal, very like
this is happening
Morning, John
Got your house
The build site's right over here
about 250ft off the road
Let's stir up some dust
Let's do it
With the containers delivered
the next step is getting them
positioned on the build site
Touchdown
Alright, we're going to
go get number 2
Better work
You bet, that's good
Hey, that'll work
That's awesome, man
I gotta give you a hug
There's your house
right there, buddy
Well, we got it on the ground
Didn't you?
Y'all did a great job
Alright, I think your fun
just began
Yeah, well, now comes
the hard part
Right
The next mission
is arranging them
into a U-shape
I think we can go ahead
and push it
OK
One of the biggest challenges
is get them connected
to one another
and welded
then get the whole thing
as a whole leveled
What do you think of that?
Why are we pitched so bad?
You gotta raise it
and level it about 4 inches
We're having to dig
and push and pull
and I gotta kind of
move one side
Well, when you move one side
it kicks out the other side
and they weigh 5000 pounds apiece
It's going to take
a little bit of finesse
We ought to be alright there
I think this is about it
Bring it together
and weld the heck out of it
To be able to see
the containers on my property
is an amazing feeling
Now I've just gotta
make them look pretty
What an adventure
It's week 3
and Kirk is busy
removing the doors
welding the containers together
and leveling them
on railroad ties
We welded 5-inch plate steel
connecting each container
to the other
Now it's all one unit
Very unconventional
hiring a welder
to come in and
weld your house together
Next, Kirk must use
a plasma torch
to cut through
the 14-gauge metal walls
to connect the inside
of his off-grid home
Plasma torch gets so hot
that it'll cut through
metal like butter
Molten metal
literally just flying everywhere
It's a very efficient machine
With the containers
set and connected
now Kirk is ready
to begin the conversion
Good job, baby
We're gonna have
a lean-to style roof on it
By adding a roof
and cutting in windows and doors
Purpose of the roof
is not necessarily
for structural support
It's more for aesthetics
All right, now we're
cooking with gas
I chose to go with a tin roof
Tin roof's longevity
It sheds water
and it really looks cool
in the middle of the night
We're having generator issues
and we're having some problems
with our generator
One of the outlets
isn't working
and it keeps kicking out
Obviously it would be easier
if we were on grid
Damn
We're not as far
as I wanted to be today
I wanted to get
the full roof on
We're obviously
running out of daylight
Get up a little
extra early tomorrow
Dang generator
Deep in the Oklahoma Ozarks
Kirk Wolf forges ahead
on his off-grid
shipping container house
He's already cut openings
connecting the 3 containers
and welded them together
His next task is the roof
but progress is hampered
by a faulty generator
Generator was shot
I bought a carburetor
installed it this morning
and this is what we've got
With the generator fixed
Kirk finishes
installing the tin roof
So we got all of it on
Awesome progress today
Well
Well, what do you think
I think we're going to
buy some windows and doors
Intending to use
as much reclaimed material
in their home as possible
Kirk and Rose head to
a building salvage yard
to scout for lucky finds
I'm excited to have Rose here
She tends to reign me in
a little bit
I know what you're looking at now
As much as I hate to admit it
I need that
Wouldn't need to
I'll approve that one
No, no, no
Here's a bunch of windows
That one's not bad actually
I like that one actually
I want to show you some doors
All right
So I like these doors
All right
At the end of the master
the doors are going to open up
Right
We have a little deck there
Right
Who's going to install it
Well, I'll install it
All right, if you say so
Yeah, we can make that work
All right, we'll take that door
All right
It's a keeper
With the reclaimed windows and doors
now on site
the next step is installation
I'll have to use my plasma torch
to cut out windows, cut out doors
It's a two-person job
but help has been hard to find
People that told me
that we're going to show up
haven't showed up
I hear something
What do we got
Oh, Craig's here
Fortunately, Kirk won't have to
work alone today after all
His friend Craig
shows up to lend a hand
Morning
Hey, hey
I got a little head start
So it's better to install
doors, windows first
Let's do it
OK
Let's get it done
Get on to something else
All right, let's do that
But even with Craig on the scene
they have a mountain of work to do
They'll work over the next week
to install nearly 20 windows and doors
This right here
This is going to be my front door
It's a time-consuming process
for two people
that puts Kirk behind schedule
And with winter approaching
the stakes are high
I've got to get dried in
before the winter hits
The Ozarks are known
for their ice storms
If we have water intrusion
it's going to set me
a month behind
I'm done
Everything's taking
10 times longer
than what I anticipate it to be
Today we're going to be
putting on siding, sealing up the roof
If I get one of those achieved today
I guess that'll be a good day
I think that's it
Because that's what happens
every two minutes
Kirk and Craig move on
to the next step
in the cabin conversion
by adding the exterior siding
15 and a quarter
It came down 9 inches
Let's cut this out
Made a little progress today
Got that one going on right now
That one going on right there
This side is complete
Here Drake, Isabella
Man!
That door lasted 4 days
So apparently
Drake decided to throw rocks
You can't play like that
Throwing rocks at windows
That's what happens, okay?
I know
Let me give you some of my
Let me give you my $5
I don't want your money
It'll be all right
Go, go play, have fun
Kirk and Rose decide
it's time for a day off
and hit the open road
to explore the Ozarks on 2 wheels
Going into this project
I knew it was going to be
difficult at times
But right now
I'm hurting pretty bad
I need a little relief
I'm falling behind schedule
So being able to
just forget about
things for a while
that allows me to
recharge my batteries
There's just something
very freeing about
being on 2 wheels
and feeling the wind
in your face
Stop here and look a while
Got a little warm out too
Tell you what, it's nice
being out though
Boy, that's nice
That's pretty
Where are you going to
get a view like that?
Being able to live out
in the Ozarks, for me
it's a dream come true
One of the biggest things
I enjoy, you're allowed
a little bit more freedom
to do what you want
You have privacy
The point of this
was to get away
It allows me
to organize my thoughts
So I'm thinking about
the next challenge
that's coming along
Now I'm able to
concentrate on it
a little bit better
And I'm thinking about
what do I want
What's my dream
Nobody's going to
hand you your dream
You've got to work for it
This is my dream
and I'm going to
make it happen
In the Ozark mountains
of Oklahoma
fall is turning into winter
Winter is coming
Kirk Wolf and his 3 kids
are building an off-grid home
made from metal
shipping containers
Look at all the windows
With the exterior roofing
and siding complete
and temperatures dropping
they turn their focus
to the interior
by roughing in the walls
Halfway through the project
Craig has been Kirk's
only consistent source of help
so far
It looks better
without broken glass
Yeah, listen to that dude again
Crazy hair day
Every day is crazy hair day
But today the priority
is installing the off-grid systems
We've got the solar panels
to be installed
They told me they were
going to be having it
all wired up today
I don't know
how complex it is
but we'll see
what the day brings
Morning
Kirk, how are you?
Doing good, how are y'all?
Good, you've made
some progress
since we were here last
It looks great
Hopefully we can make
some more progress today
We'll get right on it
OK
Man!
All right, what do you think?
These things look awesome
Good
So there's 6 panels
6 panels, they're each 280 watts
They have a tempered glass
over the top
How many amps
are these putting out?
Almost up to 1700 watts
and about 23 amps per panel
That's going to run
whatever I want it to run then
Yeah
Man, that's awesome
So this is running then
13.8 volts, look at that
We're going to plug that in
and we're going to see
if we have power off the solar
You ready?
Go!
Woohoo!
Oh man!
There's no generator
That's solar
I'm so happy about that
It's happening
It is happening
So last couple of hours
have been pretty interesting
Here's the state
that the property is in right now
This is our new
heating and air conditioning system
So I got 400 foot of pipe
and exit there
and we run that line
and it goes out and around
to the inlet there
Kirk's geothermal system
is a renewable form
of heating and cooling
that utilizes a loop
of 400 feet of pipe
buried 6 feet underground
Hot air is drawn from the house
circulated through the pipe
where the temperature
is a constant 55 degrees
and returned to the home
as cooler air
Let's try it
I love it
With a blower attached
Kirk is able to test the system
Here you go
Geothermal is alive and well
That's an Ozark Christmas
right there
That's great progress
Installation's in
I've got the boxes going in
for the electrical
light switches
Kirk has already installed
foam board installation
and completed his electrical wiring
We've got 90% of the house
50% done
We're really unsure
about how we're going to
design that bathroom
No, we're pretty sure
Toilet goes here
You can't have nails in it
I have racked my brain
This is going to be the sink
Redesigning that bathroom
probably 7 or 8 different times
Toilet is going to go here
Or you face this direction
Take a shower
I want a full-size shower
This wall will be a mirror
I want a full-size bathroom
in a smaller home
And I need a vent fan
Living room, bedroom
Let's go ahead and start
on the ceiling in here
But to have the truest sense
of their options
with the limited space
They decide to focus
on drywall
Asked a professional drywall
hanger to help me out
Ain't no show
Oh, you know what,
I got to do it myself
Craig's been helping me
which is fantastic
That's our first piece
of drywall
Outside of Craig being out here
and helping me
I've had no other
contractors come out
They just blow me off
because it's not easy
It's a non-traditional build
They have to actually think
outside the box
to be able to work on
So that was all getting to me
But a bigger concern emerges
as Kirk wraps up work
on the first room
When the drywall starts going up
It really starts
making it a home
I was expecting it
to be a good feeling
Hey baby
How's it going?
It was just kind of mundane
I don't know
I mean, this is my living room
This is our living room
Do you think it's going to work?
It's going to be small
Especially when we're all
in here together
But it's going to work
You're kind of at
a turning point here
So here before long
It's going to look a lot different
You don't think so?
I had to take a step back
Maybe it was a culmination
of all the negativity
and all the no's
that I've been getting from everyone
I just hit a wall
This was your dream right here
To be perfectly honest
These shipping containers
It seemed like a neat idea
I'm just over it
Maybe this isn't such a good idea
Maybe shipping containers
don't make good homes
Off-grid home builder
Kirk Wolf is in deep
His shipping container conversion
has been more DIY than he expected
The difficult work
is taking a heavy toll on him
And as the living space
begins to take shape
He's increasingly aware
of his limited options
This is our living room
Do you think it's going to work?
To be perfectly honest
I don't like it
I mean, it's just flat
It doesn't look like a home
You can do something to it
Maybe throw a front porch on
or something
That's actually not a bad idea
Yeah, that'll look good
front porch
You got this
Come on, let's go
You can look online
You can see all of these
cool shipping container concepts
For an average person
like myself
I've never done this before
I have a budget
I have a timeline
I have only so many hours in a day
We're at 105 1⁄2
See if we're the same
on the other side
105 1⁄2
Oh, sweet
Let's cut one of them up
With his trusty cohort Craig
Kirk immediately embarks
on modifying
the front of the containers
Figure it out like that
I was a little worried
that the 36-foot line
looked a little bit trailerish
You good, Craig?
Go
But Rose's idea
to put the front porch
to kind of break up
the monotony, the straight lines
I think it's going to help
How are you?
A lot of the designs of cabins
and smaller homes
that family room
is really centered
around the wood stove
Let's build this thing
Now we'll just
shove that through
I absolutely love
the idea of a wood stove
Man, that dresses it up
kind of nicely
It sure does
And to finally see that go in
I feel very excited about that
Let's start a fire
There you go
There, now
We lit a fire off of it
to feel the warmth off of that
even just for a little bit
It was enough
to give me goosebumps
Come here, you see it?
See the smoke?
Yeah
That's going to keep us
warm in the winter
Well, it's day whatever
on the project
There's so many
different little projects
on this thing
that are not complete
that it is starting
to jumble up in my mind
as far as what to do next
It's taking its toll
I was supposed to have
a plumber show up today
And guess what?
Oh, he didn't show
It's 60 miles
from where they normally work
They weren't going to
drive this far
I have just come to the
conclusion that
for what I don't know how to do
I'm just going to learn
All right, so I can hear
Craig in there
And he's doing a great job
I need to get to work
The next step is
custom framing the interior
Unable to use
over-the-counter products
due to size limitations
Kirk and Craig are forced
to custom build everything
We have to utilize
every square inch possible
Craig has spearheaded
designing the kitchen
and the cabinets
He's a woodworker
This is the leg for the table
We've had to make everything
And it has allowed me
to freely express myself
And Kirk does it too
Where we have to make
our own tools at times
I'll cut this down to size
We've made it out of
a lot of recycled materials
that you wouldn't normally use
in a new build
That appealed to me
This is the kitchen table
And there's 2 of them
Both of them actually came from scrap
These are floor joists
out of a build across town
And they threw them away
And right there's
how it used to be
And that's what
we ended up with
90% of the materials
that I've used out of here
were meant for the dump
Do-it-yourself solutions
for everything
Right there
It's kind of a rough drawing
but here's what we're gonna do
Hey, what do you guys
think of this?
This is your bedroom
So they're gonna have
3 custom bunk beds
Okay, so this is the way
it's gonna work
So when you walk
in your bedroom
there'll be a bed right here
Allowing storage
under those beds
And then up a level
will be this bed
And then up a level
will be this bed over here
Does that work?
Yeah
We are dealing with
square inches
Square footage
We better get working
on that then
So Kirk wanted to put
something other than
just wallboard up
And at the end of the day
a custom use of scrap wood
has helped transform
the boxy living room
We got an excess amount
of barn lumber
So what we're doing
is just making a mosaic
I think it'll look good
It'll look rustic
But despite valuable progress
Kirk's gratification
is short-lived
I'm going to shut it down
for today
Go back into town
for supplies for tomorrow
I did have some
very good news today
My mom called me
and told me that
they found a mass in her lawn
It's tough to deal with
I'm gonna finish building
and everything's gonna be alright
I just gotta finish the build
Having luckily avoided
an icy winter
Spring is around the corner
And Kirk Wolf needs to get
his cabin in the Ozark woods
finished
All right, here we go
He's completed the addition
of a front porch
Rose's idea to come in
and put the front porch
It made it look more like a home
And added a 200-square foot
back deck
But he's running out of time
Gotta get this thing done
in the next three weeks
So we can get moved in
And I've gotta get
back to work
It's crunch time
I'll lick it, now you lick it
Oh, no!
The final hurdle for Kirk
is to finish the interior
and small details
All right, we're not
quite finished yet
We're getting there
I need to put it down
in texture
That looks really good
Rose is in there painting
I've gotta finish
soffit and fascia
I've gotta finish up
the bathroom
The plumber showed up today
which was fantastic
Let's see if we got water
Awesome.
Trim.
This place needs trim
like there's no tomorrow.
I need trim pieces
to fill in all the little gaps.
I would not have been able
to complete this project
without Craig.
His wife showed up today,
which is great.
Okay, let's put the bed together.
Him and I have become buds.
I mean, we are tight.
I've gotta finish up the bedrooms.
I've gotta build
the custom beds for him yet.
With a short time left
on this project,
we have got a lot to do
with sore bodies.
The pressure is on.
The tension is high.
It has been emotionally draining
and physically draining.
There's your bed, Dick.
And I wouldn't change a thing.
That's awesome.
It's a friendship for life.
It's a bromance.
Let's just be honest.
I'm okay with that.
I think that's about right.
Hand me that level.
Here you go.
Thanks, sir.
Installing the sign,
that's what made this property official.
Right there is level.
Rose and the kids and I
sat down one night
and we settled on Wolflahoma Lodge.
We have officially named the property.
Giving the name to the place
is like giving it its own spirit.
That's a powerful thing,
to have a name.
Man, that looks great.
I think it's a winner.
Wolflahoma Lodge.
With friends due to arrive soon
for a housewarming party,
Kirk is scrambling to tie up loose ends.
You know, today's the day.
Today's the big reveal.
I've invited some folks over.
I'm a little nervous about that.
I don't know what to expect.
I think it looks pretty,
but let's see what others think.
So I took two old kerosene lanterns,
wired them for a light bulb.
Now they're my front porch lights
with a flick of a switch.
Industrial country
is what we're going to call it.
I'm thinking it's a manly looking look.
You know, of course, Rose comes back
and kind of softens that,
and that's what she does.
We're running around
trying to finish up
these last little touches,
and here comes Rose.
Hey, before everybody gets here,
I have a little surprise for you.
Okay.
So why don't you go sit on the couch
and close your eyes
and I'll be right back.
All right.
I'll hang out.
I'll be back.
All right.
I'm like, what are you talking about?
I've got people coming.
I don't have time to sit on the couch
and close my eyes for a second.
Okay, Kirk, you can come out, please.
One, two, three.
Look to your left.
It was a hell of a surprise.
The hat surprised me.
It's been nearly five months
since Kirk Wolf broke ground
in the Oklahoma Ozarks
on his off-grid shipping container house.
And despite countless surprises
and setbacks, he's finally done.
But before the celebration begins,
Rose has a very special surprise
for Kirk.
One, two, three.
Look to your left.
Surprise!
And there stands my mom.
It's so good to see you.
My mom's been dealing
with some health issues.
She probably shouldn't
have been traveling,
but it's a great milestone
in my life to be able to
Oh, baby.
Welcome to my place.
Thank you.
That was a hell of a surprise.
The hat surprised me.
Come on and check it out.
Oh, this is beautiful, Kirk.
These were three shipping containers.
You cannot tell.
I was expecting something
like the box cart.
It's so much bigger
than I thought it was gonna be.
It's beautiful.
It's gorgeous.
It's just gorgeous.
So Rose actually is the one
who decorated it all.
Did a good job.
This is 100% off-grid.
All this power
were completely 100% off-grid.
I'm impressed.
This is the kids' room here.
This is impressive.
This is cute.
All off-grid.
This here, Craig came up with,
which folds down to create space.
Cool.
This pops down like that,
and it folds down just like that.
And then if you want it up,
voila.
Craig also made the toolbox.
And he accented it out,
and it now has a cutlery in it.
Oh, silverware.
Yeah.
I will never look at another toolbox
the same way again.
Yeah, he did a good job.
The kitchen, again,
this was Craig's brainchild.
He custom-built this whole thing.
This was all scrap.
This was all meant to be burned.
This is the geothermal.
Flip that switch on, sweetheart.
Sucks in air up there,
shoves it down into the ground,
and comes out over here
by the fireplace.
Cool.
I mean, we've got
a fully-functioning refrigerator,
microwave, stove, with an oven.
That's it.
Impressive.
And...
You have water.
We have water.
And that's good pressure,
and it's coming from the cistern.
From the cistern.
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean, it's so cool.
Those are my words,
cool and impressive.
And then we designed the bathroom
with Rose in mind.
It's cute.
I like it.
I love the galvanized.
Even though we have a tiny home,
I didn't want her to have
a tiny bathroom.
Goes all the way around
to a sink over here.
It's a 3-foot by 3-foot shower.
Turn on the cold water,
the one on the right.
Just flip it up.
Yep.
You have a rain shower.
Yeah, we have a rain shower.
Another cool thing,
it's our closet,
and it rolls out.
Is it on tracks or...?
No, no, it's on wheels.
No, it's on casters.
Yeah.
The master bedroom.
It has a queen bed in it.
It's simple,
but we don't need much.
This is beautiful.
You've done a good job.
I can't even tell
that it's a container.
Right?
I'll show you the deck.
Okay.
So what I really wanted to show you
was this outdoor deck here
because this is what makes
living in a smaller home plausible.
Look at the view.
It's beautiful.
We've got to go up there yet.
Okay.
You are tall.
These are not short steps.
This is so neat.
This gives you that.
This is so nice.
This place is epic.
This is beautiful.
It's nice to show your friends your house.
In the end, the biggest challenge
to building your own home
is to just keep going.
But once you've done it,
that feeling of accomplishment
is indescribable.
It was a great journey, man.
I have touched every board in this place.
I've put in every screw, every nail.
I know everything there is to know
about this house,
and you can't have a better connection
to your home than that.
All right, let's go.
Hey, you guys dry off
before you hit that couch.
Life out here is precious.
The kids love it.
You ready to have your party?
Now we get to experience life.
We're not just surviving life.
Set them out here like this.
There is no better balance
to a stressful life
than coming home
to an off-grid lifestyle.
Everything just melts away,
and I am at peace.
Finally, I feel home,
and we're happy here.
Now make a wish, make a wish,
and blow it out.
Good job, bud.
This is my home,
and I did it myself.
