What SpaceX just Did with Starship after Booster 18 Incident will Blow Your Mind...
SpaceX began dismantling Booster 18 immediately after the incident, and early work on Booster 19 now appears to be underway. The rapid pace of activity is expected to continue, everyone. At the same time, upgrades to both launch pads are still moving forward with steady progress.
Meanwhile, SpaceX has completed its one hundred fiftieth Falcon 9 launch of the year, bringing the company closer than ever to its planned goals. In addition, NASA has reported new progress on the Artemis 2 spacecraft, marking another important step toward the mission.
Let us explore all of these developments in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

The recent Booster 18 incident has certainly slowed SpaceX’s momentum, although a slowdown does not mean a halt. In fact, the response from the team shows a determined push to recover and move forward with even greater focus. Once engineers assessed the condition of Booster 18, it became clear that the vehicle could no longer support future Starship operations. Its remaining value is the data it can provide, which will help guide improvements in the next generation of prototypes.
After confirming that the site was safe, SpaceX moved quickly. By the afternoon of November twenty first, a large crane arrived at the Massey facility. The crane was positioned to support teams working on the damaged booster beginning the morning of November twenty second. By that afternoon, the first major cutting operations were underway. The initial cut showed that SpaceX chose to separate the booster into two main sections, which were the liquid oxygen tank and the methane tank. This approach likely served two purposes. The first purpose was to simplify the analysis of each section. The second purpose was to account for the different levels of post incident damage. By the end of the day, both sections had been fully separated.

Once the booster was split, the dismantling continued with more precision. The methane tank was divided into three smaller pieces. Although the exact intent is unknown, one possibility is that the forward region near the hot staging hardware suffered the least damage. If that is correct, SpaceX may preserve that portion for reference during the construction of future prototypes, while removing the sections that were more heavily deformed. Time will reveal whether this assumption holds true.
The liquid oxygen tank showed more severe damage, yet interestingly it did not appear to be cut further. Instead, workers were seen welding on the tank dome on the morning of November twenty third. Many observers believe that temporary lifting points were being added. This would make sense because the original lifting hardware was located on the forward section of the booster. Once the methane tank was removed, the liquid oxygen section no longer had a proper lifting location. The added welds likely prepared the tank for safe transport and inspection.
