Minka Kelly sits down with Drew Barrymore to talk about her memoir, 'Tell Me Everything', her newest film 'Champagne Problems', what it was like filming in Paris, and so much more!
Please welcome the lovely, wonderful, beautiful Minka Kelly, everybody.
I have known each other for years.
We actually did a TV show together, then we're texting like crazy because your book came
out and I love the title, Tell Me Everything.
And I was wondering when the title came about, were you, how did you feel about it?
I love that question because the whole time writing the book, I didn't know what to call
it.
Really?
Yeah.
Literally until I wrote that last page.
And I was just having this spiritual conversation with her at the end of this and I just literally
wrote that down.
Like, what was it like for you?
Tell me everything.
And this is Minka's mom.
It is the reason that for me, and I think we can all relate to so many different things.
In our case, there was so much circumstances that were aligned.
Single moms, moms who worked.
Your mom worked, my mom worked at the Troubadour and the Comedy Store around just tons of partying
and hedonism and stuff.
Your mom worked at Crazy Horse.
Crazy Girls.
The Strip Club.
And the way that you set up the book with going to your mom's work and all the women
who worked there, I just really related to sort of what it feels like.
I mean, it's behind the scenes at these early ages.
The crazy father who's like in and out.
I mean, is there anything we didn't have in common growing up?
Once you've survived that, I think it creates such an amazing strength.
You can be a victim and you can use it as a weakness and you can blame others.
That is a choice.
You can also make it your empowerment.
I think the most important thing that I learned is that I have this deeper understanding of
like I had it wrong the whole time.
I didn't love myself.
I kept trying to love outward.
I kept trying to get love from other people.
And I didn't know that loving myself or trying to trust myself was this goal that I didn't
even know I was trying to reach because I didn't know it was the goal.
As soon as I stopped outsourcing my self-worth and my safety to everyone else around me,
things changed.
And it took a life coach to help me with that, literally.
I had so many therapists.
And that's great.
All of the therapies are wonderful, but it literally just took a friend who is just so
much smarter than me in all these ways, helping me do things differently and actually teaching
me how and what that means to love yourself and to stop outsourcing your safety to everyone
else.
I'm like, what does that mean?
Love yourself.
It sounds like such an abstract idea.
And reading your book, I got all of that.
And it is such a beautiful journey.
Okay.
Is it true that your gentleman who you are so lovely with and have been with now for
a few years, did he read your book before he spent time with you?
Yes?
We had been FaceTiming and talking and texting before we met because I was out of the country
working and a mutual friend was like, you guys should talk.
And I accidentally just said, what a crazy day today.
I just turned in my final pages, I wrote a book.
And he's like, I want to read it.
And so I was like, okay, well, here you go.
You'll either be terrified and run for the hills or you'll see, you know, you'll see
the beauty in all of it.
And he fortunately was the latter.
And it just made us, you know, closer.
I mean, God, if we had all been able to come with a dossier about our lives, how amazing
would that actually be?
It's scary.
It is scary.
But the scariest things are the most rewarding and the most healing I'm finding.
That said, books and bookstores was always totally where I thought I was going to meet
my man.
And your film, actually, literally, it's called Champagne Problems, everybody.
It is like the new hot film for the holiday.
It's a big one.
And I'm telling you, it is so much fun and it is so good.
And I do love that there is a bookstore romance.
It's one of my favorite parts about it.
Which is so romantic.
This film takes place in France.
What was it like to work there?
I mean, it was a dream come true.
It's my favorite city in the world.
And I love, like, rom-coms and then holiday rom-coms on top of it.
I just, I mean, 54 States is one of my favorites.
Well, and we were doing a story in the news about how Reese Witherspoon has said, with
a lack of rom-coms, we're sort of losing the art of being inspired by film and putting
ourselves out there more and talking to each other.
I saw this hot guy walking down the street the other day.
I was trying to eye meet him.
And he wouldn't look up from his phone.
He just walked right past me and I was like, I wanted to, like, smack it out of his hand
and be like, dude, if he had looked and not been interested, but I was like, we didn't
even get to look.
Didn't have the chance.
I know.
To reject me.
Nose down on the phone.
Yeah.
So, well, okay, France is the most romantic city.
Do you think we could gamify this segment and see if we could maybe send somewhere to
France?
I think that's a really good idea.
Did I say send somewhere?
Send somewhere.
Yes.
Should we toss to Ross?
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Send someone to France.
Hi, hi, hi.
Bonjour.
Hi, it's me, Ross.
Or as they say in France, Ross.
Okay, I am here with Brittany.
Everyone say hi, Brittany.
Hi, Brittany.
So, Brittany's from Baltimore.
Now, Brittany, have you ever been to France?
No, but it's on my bucket list.
Oh, it is?
So, here is the question.
Now, if you get this correct, in honor of Minka's movie, Champagne Problems, we're going
to send you on a week-long trip to France, seeing the Riviera and tours.
So, you want to go ahead and go to France?
Absolutely.
Okay.
So, here is the question.
The Eiffel Tower, made entirely of iron, grows how many inches in the summer heat?
This is true.
Is it A, four inches, B, six inches, or C, eight inches?
No.
You're going to get a little time to think about it, because we're going to go to break,
and when we come back, we're going to get your answer.
And maybe we'll cheat and help you out a little bit.
What do you think of it?
I think it's great.
