As we all know, SpaceX is in a huge rush to prepare for Starship Flight 12 early next year. It’s already late November, which means the launch is just about six weeks away. Right now, there’s been some exciting progress on the two vehicles set to fly Booster 18 and Ship 39, starting with Booster 18.
Just this morning, around 4 a.m. on November 21, Booster 18 was fueling during its cryo test. The test has three stages: fill, pressurize above flight levels, then vent. We don’t know which stage it was in, but suddenly… BOOM! A huge pressure explosion sent cryo fuel spewing everywhere, most likely during the pressurization stage.

Since this just happened, SpaceX and Elon Musk haven’t said anything yet. But if we dig a little deeper, the explosion seems to have originated from the booster’s alt section, probably linked to the quick disconnect connection. The other culprit could be the LOX tank down below.
One likely scenario is that the LOX tank cracked under the high pressure, tearing a hole at the bottom. With Block 3 being nearly 2 meters longer and having thinner tank walls in some areas, stress concentrates at the junction between the LOX tank and thrust section. At −183 °C, even a tiny crack can cause tons of LOX to gush out instantly, triggering the massive explosion we saw.

Before that. On November 18th, after months of quiet, SpaceX posted a road closure schedule, and as expected, it was for Booster 18. Sitting quietly in Megabay 1 for months, it finally made its first move: rolled out to Massey on the afternoon of November 19th.
From the moment it appeared, everyone noticed its massive, gleaming stainless-steel structure. No doubt, this brand-new booster will soon undergo cryo tests to check for leaks, tank pressure limits, and structural integrity. On X, SpaceX shared some stunning shots and wrote:
"Booster 18, the first Super Heavy v3, is beginning prelaunch testing. The first operations will test the booster's redesigned propellant systems and its structural strength."
This isn’t just exciting for the SpaceX community, it’s a sign that SpaceX is back in full swing, pushing toward some of the most epic launches on the planet.
However, with the Booster 18 explosion, SpaceX will likely have to roll it back to Megabay 2 for inspection and repairs, which could delay Flight 12.
