Hello, everyone. 안녕하세요. Welcome back to Christine's Intermediate Korean Conversation.
Today's lesson is lesson 6, At the Restaurant.
I think you learned about this expression from the basic conversation Korean.
However, from this lesson, you're going to learn about more specified expressions and conversation.
So please pay your attention to this lesson and try to speak Korean slowly, alright?
Okay, let's see what we're going to learn today.
At the restaurant, the first expression is expressions of taste.
Maybe when you try to have a Korean food, you feel like, oh, it's so hot. It's spicy.
I know Korean food is really well known for spicy food.
So if you don't know how to say that, you can show your face like it's hot.
But if you speak Korean, it's going to be more happy, maybe.
Okay, so expressions of taste. Let's see.
And next is, next, what do you want to eat?
What do you want to eat?
So from the last lesson, maybe you're going to like, where do we have to go?
What should we eat? Right?
You learned that expression, but today I prepared a different one.
What do you want to eat?
So you're asking your friends that, what do you want to eat?
Okay, and the third expression is, can I get more side dishes?
Have you ever been in a Korean restaurant?
If you go there, there is a lot of, lots of side dishes with your main dish.
Main dish is rice and soup, and there are vegetables or boiled eggs and something like that.
And in Korea, side dishes are free, so you can ask the, excuse me,
you can ask waitress or waiters to have more side dishes for free.
So this expression for you.
And the last one, I am full. I am full. Right?
So after eating some food or something, you can say, oh, I am full.
So we're going to learn these four expressions.
Okay, let's take a look at the first one, expressions of taste.
Oh, excuse me, expressions of taste.
The first one, as I told you, Korean food is spicy.
So always when I try to have my American friends eat Korean food,
the first reaction from them is, wow, it's so spicy.
So here it is. Spicy. 매워요.
One more time. 매워요.
It's spicy, okay? Spicy. 매워요.
매워요. 매워요. 매워요.
One more time. 매워요.
Okay? And the next one, sweet. Sweet.
Usually Korean food is not that sweet, but you might have something sweet,
so just for instance, sweet. 달아요. 달아요.
Excuse me. 달아요. 달아요. 달아요.
So it's sweet. 달아요. 달아요.
Okay? And the next one, it's salty. 짜요. 짜요. 짜요. 짜요.
Okay? It's salty. 짜요.
And you know this expression, right? It's really delicious.
It's delicious. Delicious. 맛있어요. 맛있어요.
Oh, it's so delicious. 맛있어요. Right? 맛있어요.
How about this? Oh, it's bad. It's bad. 맛없어요. 맛없어요.
One more time. 맛없어요. 맛없어요.
Okay, from the beginning, let's look at spicy.
How can you stay spicy? 매워요. 매워요.
And sweet? 달아요. 달아요.
And salty? 짜요. 짜요.
Delicious? 맛있어요. 맛있어요.
And, oh, it's bad. 맛없어요. 맛없어요.
Okay? So these four expressions are important to express your emotions,
or express the taste of Korean food.
So please remember these five expressions, and let's take a look at the second one.
What do you want to eat? What do you want to eat?
So, when do you usually ask this question?
When someone feels hungry, or when it's lunch time, you know?
So, I am hungry. For instance, I prepared this expression.
I am hungry. 배고파요. 배고파요.
Oh, I am hungry. 배고파요. 배고파요.
One more time. 배고파요. Okay? 배고파요. 배고파요.
And, when your friends tell you, oh, I am hungry. 배고파요.
So, what's the next one you're going to ask?
Oh, really? What do you want to eat? Right?
Do you want to go for eating something? Right?
So, what do you want to eat?
What means 뭐. 뭐. You know this, right?
And want to eat. 먹고 싶어요. 먹고 싶어요.
One more time. 먹고 싶어요. A little faster. 먹고 싶어요.
So, what do you want to eat?
What. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요.
Okay? One more time. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요.
So, oh, I am hungry. 배고파요. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요.
Okay? Let's go eat something.
So, what do you want to eat? 뭐. 먹고 싶어요. Make sense?
Okay, let's see the conversation.
A. I am hungry. 배고파요. 배고파요. 배고파요.
So, I am hungry. B. What do you want to eat?
뭐. 먹고 싶어요. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요. Okay?
뭐. 먹고 싶어요. Am I fast? A little slow?
뭐. 먹고 싶어요. 뭐. 먹고 싶어요.
And A suggests, how about 불고기? How about 불고기?
불고기. You know, 불고기. How about. 어때요? 어때요?
Okay? How about. What about. 어때요? 어때요?
So, um, how about 불고기? 불고기 어때요? Make sense?
So, your friend A says, I am hungry. 배고파요.
And you ask this question, 뭐 먹고 싶어요?
And A suggests, how about 불고기? 불고기 어때요?
불고기 어때요? Okay?
Next, B says, and you said, you say, sounds good.
Sounds good. Oh, I like it. You agreed. Right?
좋아요. I like it. Sounds good. 좋아요. 좋아요. 좋아요. Okay? 좋아요.
And A and B finally went to the 불고기 restaurant.
And at the restaurant, there is a waitress asking, let me help you order.
So, can I help you? Let me help you order.
You know this expression, right? From the movie theater and what else.
From the shopping. Not shopping, maybe.
So, let me help you order. Let's see.
Order. 주문. 주문. Let me help. 도와드릴게요.
Remember this? 주문 도와드릴게요. Okay?
주문 도와드릴게요. Okay. Sounds good. I like it. 좋아요.
And let me help you order. 주문 도와드릴게요.
Then, what you have to do is to order.
Please give us two 불고기. It's easy.
You repeat it, speaking this expression all the time. Right?
So, please give us two 불고기. How can you say?
불고기, two. One, two. It's counting numbers.
두 개, please. 주세요. 불고기 두 개 주세요.
Make sense? Please give us two 불고기. 불고기 두 개 주세요.
And this waitress says, okay. 네. So far so good?
Okay. Then, A. Your friend is thirsty.
So, asking this question. Can we get some water?
Can we get some water? It's a new expression.
So, let's take a look at. Can you get some water?
Which means, please give us water. Please give us water.
So, what's please? That's right. 주세요. Right? 주세요.
What about water? What's water in Korean? 물.
So, please give us water. What's that in Korean? 물 주세요.
However, I add this expression. 좀.
Why? Because if you say 물 주세요 to the waitress, it's okay.
But, you know, Korean culture is really respectful.
And we really think respectation is important.
That's one of our really famous culture.
So, by adding 좀, this expression, you can be more respectful to the waitress.
Make sense? So, anyway, please give us water in Korean.
It can be 물 주세요.
However, if you add 좀 between two expressions, it can be more respectful and nice.
Okay? So, 물 좀 주세요.
But, you know what? Either way is working.
But to be more respectful, I add this expression.
Make sense? Okay. 물 좀 주세요.
물 좀 주세요. Okay? 물 좀 주세요.
Can you get some water? Please give us water.
Make sense? 물 좀 주세요. Okay.
And see, there are two possible response you could get from waitress.
The first one is please help yourself.
In Korean restaurant, most of Korean restaurant has a sign saying water itself.
I know it's not English. It might be Korean. It's Korean English.
However, it's Korean culture and mostly you have to stand up and go to the water fountain and take your water.
Okay? So, 물은 self입니다.
Please help yourself. How can you say in Korean?
물은 water, 물은 self, self입니다.
Okay? 물은 self입니다.
Self is not. It's self. Self.
It's Korean way to say. Say this one. 물은 self입니다.
Water itself. It's not English. I know it's funny.
Please help yourself in Korean. 물은 self입니다.
Which means, oh, we don't know. We're not going to do that for you.
Just, you know, help yourself.
Okay? It's rude, by the way, but it's for your explanation.
So, 물은 self입니다.
물은 self입니다.
Okay? Or, okay, 네, please wait a moment.
Please wait a moment. Which means, okay, I will get you water.
Please wait a moment. Okay?
So, okay, 네, please wait a moment.
A moment is 잠시만, please wait. 기다리세요.
Okay? A moment, 잠시만, please wait. 기다리세요.
So, if the waitress say, 네, 잠시만 기다리세요.
If you heard this expression, you don't have to stand up. Just stay there.
However, if the waitress say, please help yourself, you have to stand up and get your water by yourself.
Okay? One more time. 물은 self입니다.
Or, 네, 잠시만 기다리세요.
Okay? Good.
Now, the third expression.
Can I get more side dishes?
Okay, now you're eating delicious Korean food and you just finally found, oh, we need more side dishes.
Okay, let's ask. Can I get more side dishes?
However, what's side dishes?
Side dishes are 반찬. 반찬.
One more time. 반찬. 반찬.
Okay? 반찬.
And more, 좀 더. 좀 더.
More, 좀 더. 좀 더.
And, can I get, which is same with please, right? 주세요. 주세요.
So, how can you say, can I get more side dishes? How can you say in Korean?
I think you got it, right? That's right.
반찬. Side dishes.
More, 좀 더. Can I get? 주세요.
반찬 좀 더 주세요.
Make sense? 반찬 좀 더 주세요.
Okay? Good.
So, when you feel like you need more side dishes, just say this expression to your waitress and she will give you more side dishes.
Okay? 반찬 좀 더 주세요.
However, likewise, there are two possible ways to say, to respond the request.
A. What do you need more?
Which means, okay, I will get you, but what do you need more?
There are several side dishes, so what do you need more?
Okay? 뭐, what, 더 드릴까요?
More, 더, do you need? 드릴까요?
So, okay, 뭐 더 드릴까요?
Make sense?
You just asked, 반찬 좀 더 주세요.
And if your waitress comes and says, 뭐 더 드릴까요?
It means, the waitress will get you side dishes.
Okay? 뭐 더 드릴까요?
Alright? But, here it is.
Help yourself. Again, help yourself.
What side dishes? Now you asked side dishes, so what side dishes?
반찬, 반찬은 셀프입니다.
Side dishes are self. 반찬은 셀프입니다.
Every restaurant has different atmosphere, so each restaurant is different.
If you just walk in like chicken, some chicken restaurant, or fried, not fried, it's a spiced chicken restaurant,
there are some buffet, side dish buffet, so you can just go there and pick some side dishes what you want,
and come to your table and eat it.
Which means, side dishes are self, help yourself.
Okay? Otherwise, you can just wait until the waitress gives you the side dishes.
Okay? Let's see one more time.
Oh, can I get more side dishes?
The first response you could get is, 뭐 더 드릴까요?
What do you need more?
뭐 더 드릴까요? or help yourself, side dishes are self.
반찬은 셀프입니다. 반찬은 셀프입니다.
Very good, and two and three conversation.
I'm hungry. What's that? 배고파요.
And what do you want to eat?
What's that? 뭐 먹고 싶어요?
Right? I'm hungry. 배고파요. 뭐 먹고 싶어요?
And how about 불고기?
How about 불고기? What's that? It's simple.
불고기, how about? 어때요?
불고기 어때요? Okay? 불고기 어때요?
And you like it. So sounds good.
How can you say? Sounds good. 좋아요.
And you walk into the restaurant, and there is a waitress.
Hello, let me help you order. What's hello?
So when you walk into the store, like a closed store, restaurant, or fast food, or movie theater,
hello is not 안녕하세요. What's that?
어서오세요. Right? Remember? 어서오세요.
And let me help you order. What's that?
주문 도와드릴게요.
Are you following me? Okay, good.
Then, please give us two 불고기.
It's simple, right? 불고기 두 개 주세요.
불고기 두 개 주세요.
And waitress says, 네.
And, oh, you're thirsty. Can you get some water?
Can you get some water? What's water? 물?
More? 좀 더? Can we get? 주세요.
물 좀 주세요. Okay? 물 좀 주세요.
Then, oh, maybe you don't like it, right?
Please help yourself. What's that?
Water is self. In Korean English, 물은 셀프입니다.
물은 셀프입니다.
Alright, good.
And you ask again, can I get more side dishes?
Oh, we need more side dishes. What's that?
Side dishes? 반찬, more, 좀 더, please. 주세요.
Can I get? 반찬 좀 더 주세요.
And he says, okay, 네.
Please wait a moment. What's that?
잠시만 기다리세요.
Oh, please hold on. I will be back in ten minutes.
I will be back in a second. Okay?
네, 잠시만 기다리세요.
Make sense? Okay, good.
And finally, the last expression, I am full.
And after eating all delicious Korean, you feel like,
I am so full. I am full. How can you say?
배불러요.
Or, I am full. I ate too much.
너무 많이.
먹었어요.
너무 많이 먹었어요.
So, I am full. 배불러요.
너무 많이 먹었어요.
Or, when you ate too much and you say,
I can't breathe.
I ate too much to breathe.
I can't breathe.
숨을 못 쉬겠어요.
It's a totally new expression.
Just follow me.
숨을 못 쉬겠어요.
Okay? So, three types of saying, I am full.
I am full. 배불러요.
And, I ate too much.
너무 많이 먹었어요.
And, I can't breathe.
숨을 못 쉬겠어요.
Okay? Three types.
배불러요. 너무 많이 먹었어요.
숨을 못 쉬겠어요.
Okay? Good.
And finally, review.
배고파요.
I am hungry.
What do you want to eat?
뭐 먹고 싶어요?
How about 불고기?
불고기 어때요?
And, sounds good. 좋아요.
And, at the restaurant, there is a waitress.
어서 오세요. 주문 도와드릴게요.
Can you see here? 주문 도와드릴게요.
Okay? So, one more time.
배고파요. What do you want to eat?
뭐 먹고 싶어요?
How about 불고기? 불고기 어때요?
And, sounds good. 좋아요.
And, waitress?
어서 오세요. 주문 도와드릴게요.
So far, so good.
And, next.
불고기 두 개 주세요.
And, waitress?
Oh, waitress is C. I am sorry. C is waitress.
네. 네.
And, A. 물 좀 주세요.
Can I get some water?
물 좀 주세요.
And, waitress says, help yourself.
물은 셀프입니다.
And, what about side dishes?
So, you ask again.
반찬 좀 더 주세요.
And, waitress says, 네.
Okay. Wait a moment.
잠시만 기다리세요.
All right?
And, after eating Korean food, A says,
배불러요. I am full.
배불러요. I ate too much.
너무 많이 먹었어요.
And, B says, me too.
저도요. It's a new expression.
Me too. 저도요. 저도요.
I can't breathe.
숨을 못 쉬겠어요.
And, do you remember this expression?
It's a Korean culture. I explained this again.
I explained this before.
So, I am not going to do this again.
제가 낼게요. It's on me.
제가 낼게요.
It's on me.
제가 낼게요.
One more time.
제가 낼게요.
And, B, I will buy the coffee then for dessert.
그럼, then,
그럼, 제가, I, 제가, coffee,
coffee, coffee, buy, will buy, 살게요.
그럼, 제가, coffee, 살게요.
All right?
So, I just prepared these two expressions
to show you what Korean culture is.
Okay?
So, it's on me.
제가 낼게요.
And, you can buy the dessert
if your friends paid for the lunch.
Okay?
그럼, 제가, coffee, 살게요.
Okay?
Okay.
So, that's it.
And, how was the class today?
It was good.
And, I think it's not that difficult
if you took basic Korean conversation.
All right.
You did a really good job.
And, remember, try to speak Korean loudly and slowly
and repeat speaking Korean.
Okay?
And, you did a really good job.
And, next time, I will come back with Lesson 7, Shopping.
Okay.
Have a nice day.
감사합니다.
