Having Ed Sheeran on the music game show was a moment we’ll never forget. He was one of the first major artists we had on the show, and it was a very special shoot for many reasons—from Ed’s unmatched talent and laid-back charisma to the cameo of Jack and Kieran’s mom! Ed Sheeran’s a songwriting genius, but how well does he know the hits he didn’t write?
This Episode's Track list:

Robbie Williams – Rock DJ
Van Morrison & The Chieftains – Irish Heartbeat

Welcome to the show.
Thanks for having me.
Before we start with the music, can you introduce yourself?
Hi, I'm Ed.
Ed.
Okay, the way the game works, I'm going to play a song, if you can name the artist, you
win five bucks.
Cool.
Oh, yeah, the Cranberries, right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It took a while, it took a while for me to, yeah.
I understand.
Five dollars.
Yeah, look at me.
Funny.
Do you want to go double or nothing?
Go for ten.
Yeah, double or nothing.
Yeah, yeah, let's go.
Alright.
It's from New York City.
He's from Queens.
Oh, is that right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There you go.
Has he sampled Sopranos on that?
That's great.
Yeah.
Well, I don't know which one happened first.
I guess he did sample it.
It's an English song.
Okay.
Oh, right, yeah, Robbie Williams, rock DJ, yeah.
Robbie Williams.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay, so they're getting easier.
I should have, like, probably changed the order a little bit.
Any thoughts on Robbie Williams?
He's the GOAT.
Have you guys worked together?
Yeah, we actually have worked together.
He's like, for me, my career mirrors his in such a way that, like, he's like one of the
only people I can speak to about how I'm feeling because he just totally gets it.
You guys have written music together?
We have, yeah, yeah.
We did a song for his 2017 album, a heavy entertainment show called Pretty Woman.
I should have just played songs that you wrote.
We could go on forever.
One, two, three.
That's 20.
You want to go for $40?
Yeah, let's go for 40.
Let's go for 40.
It just keeps accelerating.
I'm in.
Let's go.
Okay, heads in.
This one is a classic right here.
Yeah, it's Irish heartbeat Van Morrison.
Van Morrison and who?
Oh, The Chieftains.
The Chieftains?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Any thoughts on this song?
This is my favorite Van Morrison album.
Really?
Yeah, yeah.
I've been listening to this album a lot.
I just got a record player.
It's great, man.
And so I've been spending a lot of time with this specific album.
Do you have that on vinyl?
Yeah.
Man, that's rare to get on vinyl.
That's my dad's.
Wow.
He had it originally.
I can't find it on vinyl.
I've only got it on CD and cassette.
I was literally in a vinyl store about 10 minutes ago trying to find that on vinyl.
That specific album?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What are the odds that I played that song for you?
Next one's 80.
80, let's go.
This is a classic.
Okay.
I mean, maybe not a classic classic, but for you and me.
Oh, yeah.
European super group here.
I'm supposed to leave you now.
Westlife.
When you're looking like that.
I can't believe.
I think.
On my bachelor party, me and my security guard listened to Westlife Greatest Hits whilst
we were just flying without wings.
I think.
There we go.
Westlife.
How do you know about Westlife?
Because I.
You know.
Because you're the guy.
That's why.
He's the guy.
Westlife is so ******* good, man.
Alright.
Is that where we're at already?
That's where we're at.
Oh, my God.
That's where we're at.
We're going to Cashpoint, baby.
He's good at math, this guy.
ATM, baby.
It's Elvis.
No, he sounds like Elvis, inspired by Elvis, but he's a bit younger.
A bit younger?
He, at one point, was in a super group.
Bob Dylan was in the band.
Was it what?
Travelling Wilbur?
He was in a Travelling Wilbur.
Wow.
What's his name?
God, you stumped me here.
God.
I don't know, man.
I don't know.
You stumped me.
I'll give you one more song by the same artist.
Who sings Pretty Woman?
------- hell.
Who sings Pretty Woman?
You know?
Roy ******* Orbison.
God.
Roy Orbison.
I find, like, there's a certain generation of music that I only know the stuff that my
dad had on records, because that's the stuff I smashed.
He didn't have that.
No, he didn't have Roy Orbison.
What's it like writing a song?
How do you write a hit song?
It's easy, right?
I never know when a song's going to be a hit.
I find that...
I'll take these from you.
I find that the only ones I've been able to call have been songs like Perfect, and that's
because, like, they come out and you can see a buzz starting happening before you, like,
do a video and stuff like that, but you never know what a hit song's going to be.
It's so unpredictable.
Otherwise, like, every artist would just always have hit songs.
I've had so many misses that no one speaks about, but, yeah, I just write, I just write
because I like writing, and I release as much music as I, like, physically can, and sometimes
it goes and sometimes it doesn't, but it doesn't take away the joy of, like, writing the song.
I wanted to bring in a guest host.
I've never done this before.
Cool.
One of your biggest fans, my mom, over here, and I wanted to play her a song.
She's going to freak out.
Sure.
She's very camera shy.
But now you're going to listen to a song.
Shall I choose the songs?
Well, I have one, and then she's going to tell you why she likes this song.
Who sings this song?
I took the supermarket flowers from the soap.
It's Sharon.
Okay, what's the name of this song?
Perfect.
No, it is not Perfect.
Oh, oh, Supermarket Flowers.
She's nervous.
She knows the song.
She's just nervous.
Tell me about Supermarket Flowers.
Well, it's...
Here, I'll take this.
Okay, okay.
So, when my husband was sick just five years ago, Jack and Kieran's dad, he had a very
bad cancer of the brain, and we were going up to Columbia-Presbyterian for treatments,
and that's when your album, Divide, was out.
So we were listening to it in the car and everything, and we had our favorite songs
from that album.
And one day, we decided to take the subway back downtown, and the door opened, and somebody
came on and started singing and playing that song for the musicians.
So it was like, it's forever in my heart.
Thank you.
One more thing, I promise.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, thank you.
That's really sweet.
Really sweet.
Are you supposed to take the paper off or no?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's a technique, right?
And you go like that.
On your leg.
And then it, like, opens there, and then you rip it.
That's the technique.
People can't read my writing, so there's lots of luck.
Okay.
Thank you.
You'll like this new one, man.
It's definitely, like, it's the first album album.
So, yeah.
Nice one, guys.
Thank you, man.
Really appreciate it.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
Nice to meet you.
