Bustle’s November 2025 cover star, Hailee Steinfeld, puts her memory to the test as she tries to remember her most iconic lines, from ‘Sinners’ and ‘True Grit’ to ‘Pitch Perfect’ and beyond.
Wow, I'm gonna be thinking about that one at 2 a.m. for sure.
Oh god, I feel like I'm gonna say yes and then prove otherwise.
Hey, I'm Hailee Steinfeld and this is Bustle's Icons Only.
Look, I don't want to take up a ton of your time.
That's it? Can I say it again?
Is there a limit on how many times I can see it?
Look, I don't want to take up a ton of your time.
But I'm gonna kill myself.
Nailed it.
I didn't have a traditional high school experience.
I was homeschooled.
So I kept it together pretty well.
I really did feel like that movie though gave me the opportunity to,
if at any point in my life I was like holding back any angst or
wanting to overreact to the smallest of things in the most dramatic way,
this like movie gave me the opportunity to do that.
And like maybe I didn't know I needed it as much as I did.
All of them, given that I was at home in my kitchen.
Like wow, that's what it's like to be in a classroom.
She's all that.
It's a favorite, favorite high school movie, if you will.
I feel like The Breakfast Club is one that I still revisit.
It's timeless for many reasons and just, yeah, just doesn't get old.
Got you a rich white husband.
Got you a farm.
Now go home to him.
I ain't asked for none of that.
All that ---- was your idea.
I didn't want no white man.
I didn't want to be white.
I wanted to be with you.
I remember that day like it was yesterday.
I feel like I will forever remember.
Ryan had given Michael and I the opportunity to really just like play
and just kind of go and we improvised a little bit.
I remember there were things that Michael said
on the spot that like just broke my heart.
These are two characters that have a lot of history
and you can feel that and you can sense that, but you hear it here.
And in finding it in real time with Michael,
that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
Romeo, Romeo.
Wherefore art thou Romeo?
Oh Lord, don't stop it there.
I should know this.
Deny thy sheath?
No.
Deny thy father and refuse thy name.
Be sworn my love and I'll no longer be a Capulet.
Wow.
I'm going to be thinking about that one at 2am.
For sure.
Thank God for No Fear Shakespeare.
Because if it weren't for that, I would still be stuck on that balcony
trying to remember the next line.
Have you done any Shakespeare before this?
No.
No, and I admire and have so much respect for those who study it
and know it like the back of their hand.
Show us what you got.
Right now.
I don't know.
Right here.
Right here, right now.
Don't make me sing.
Okay.
I'd like to perform an original song that I've been working on.
I'm not quite finished with it though, so.
So let's not be dicks about it.
Let's not be dicks about it.
Yep.
Geez, I can remember that and I can't remember the Shakespeare.
I don't know that there were any days on this film where I felt like I was at work.
Sliding down staircases, to rolling around in mud,
to performing on a stage in front of a lot of people
feeling like it was real life and we were a sold-out show at some arena.
I was such a huge fan of the first movie
that I distinctly remember sitting in the theater watching it.
I was with a friend and my parents.
I said to them on the way home,
if there is ever another movie like that, I've got to do that.
Not even thinking that there could be a sequel.
And then, uh, Emily Junk was written and we had a shot.
What is it?
They tell me you're a man with true grit.
Oh lord, I thought that would have been the one.
What do you want, girl?
Speak up, it's supper time.
Let me do that.
No shot.
I don't know.
I want a clue, but I don't know.
Your makings are too dry.
For a man.
Named.
No, I'm looking for a man.
Called.
Named.
No, I'm looking for a man who shot my father.
The man's name is Tom Chaney.
Tell me that's it.
That's it?
Let's go.
All right.
Man's name is Tom Chaney.
They say he's over in Indian territory and I need somebody to go after him.
Man.
That was the first script I had ever read that I had a lot of lines.
Because that was all, that was, it was all I knew.
And so taking that on felt like that's what you do.
This is it.
And now if I read that script now, I'd be like,
I'm gonna need a minute.
They all in their own way at some point said to me,
have a good time, trust yourself, and don't take it too seriously.
Because the minute you start doing that, the minute you're not having fun,
you're not in the right place.
They were the most incredible castmates.
They became family.
And I'm just so lucky to have had the experience that I had on my first movie.
Because that shapes you and, and how you feel about what you're doing
and where you want to go with what your, your career.
And, and I was so inspired and fulfilled after, after that movie that I like,
I'm just so grateful.
Oh, that's cool.
What is that?
Stop making me like you.
Is that it?
Yes.
Stop making me like you.
Wow.
Okay.
Florence's.
Just the best.
She came in, fit right in, made her mark.
And we had the best time.
My, some of my favorite scenes in the whole show are my ones with, with Florence.
I'm so glad we're ending on a high note, everybody.
Love it.
