Fra Angelico, in the episode of the Marking of Christ, used a symbolic language coming
from the tradition of the Middle Ages.
In a plain-walled room, Christ sits on a dais in a luminous white robe and tunic.
He is blindfolded with a crown of thorns on his head and holds the reed and stone in place
Disembodied hands baffle and slap his head, a scornful soldier spits in his face and a
stick forces the crown of thorns down on his head.
On a lower step sit the Virgin and Saint Dominic, with their backs turned towards Christ in
pauses of intense meditation, indicating the depth of meditation that the frescoes
were to inspire in each friar.
Fra Angelico, the Marking of Christ, cell number 7 of the Monastery of Saint Mark, about 1439.
