Dakar 2023 has some incredible machines… the fastest, the oldest, the most technologically advanced in the world. But the ones that catch your eye are the classics trying to complete the most gruelling rally in the world. How much does it cost to race this class?
They look cool, don't they? But how much do they cost?
This stunning classic Porsche 911 competed in 2022 and is back this year with a new owner,
Julien Texier. Porsche 911, it's a 3.2 and 250 horsepower. The weight is 1,600 kilos.
The car costs around 200,000 francs. To compete in this rally, it's got around 80,000 francs.
This car is a dream car. It's everybody's dream of a 911 and I usually race with this car on
asphalt in France and I want to race this car in the desert.
The oldest vehicle is this Peugeot 504.
So it's a 504 Peugeot V6 from 1975. It cost me about 40,000 euros.
Power is 225 horsepower. Our car is around 1.4 tons.
So to be at this Dakar this year, I think we spent about 60,000 euros.
This Citroen CX picked up nine punctures in 2022. So this year,
the team are running different tires and are desperate to see the finish line.
It weighs about 1,500 kilos and about 100 horsepower.
We got the car actually for free. It's a gift. It was standing in the garage somewhere and
somebody said, you can get it out. It's yours. For rebuilding it, we spent about,
I think about 10,000 euros altogether. For participating in a Dakar Classic,
it's altogether maybe 20,000 or something. We just love the history of this car. It
participated in the original also in 1981. And that's why we love the CX. I drove CX
all my whole life already. And that's why I love it to take this car to the Dakar.
And a Peugeot P4 also with a military background.
The car cost around 30,000 euros. The weight of the car is around two tons.
110 horsepower. 50,000 euros to be here. This car is special for me because it's a military car and
I'm also military. I was injured on the battle a couple of years ago and the race with this car
here is like to come back in the desert. And an extremely rare T3 VW Transporter
that has been completely restored.
And who can forget, of course, one of the stars of 2022, the classic Fiat Panda.
The cost to buy one of these cars used is actually not that great. It's like
4,000 euros. To modify it, to make it work for the Dakar is another 15 on top. So you got 20k
to race into the Dakar. On top of that, there's a lot of money, you know, maybe another 80, 70.
We don't want to do the calculation. But this is a special car for all Italians because you can find
one everywhere. But this one we actually found near Lake Como when we bought it used to transform.
And that's where I come from. So it's not part of my family, but it feels like.
One of the buggies that has made the start line has a 40 year history in rallying.
When I was seven years old, my father took me to see the Dakar vehicles that crossed France
on the National 7 in Moulins and Nevers. And I was enchanted by that, to see these very small
cars in the big newspapers in the middle of nowhere. It's true that it put a good sting in my veins.
And then after that, I always had the dream of doing that. It took a lot of time.
A child's dream, a kid's dream to get there.
It's a vehicle that we bought in January 2021. And then we camped for the preparations.
And it took us all that time, a little over 18 months, and almost 3,000 hours of repair,
of restarting, so that we can get there today and today.
It was a test, both in joy and in pleasure. But there were also difficult moments,
especially throughout this preparation. He was very alone to prepare the vehicle,
with all the difficulties that it entailed. And I was also very alone in everyday life,
and the accompaniment of the children, and without being able to support him on the mechanical part.
So it was indeed more difficult moments of this order than of Angola,
since we never complained about this effect. We always had this goal.
Yes, it's a vehicle that made Dakar in 1982. We bought it with the original stickers,
so it was a lot of emotion. It's really the dream.
And so he gave up the 6th stage at Dakar 82. So here, the goal is to take it to the end with us
and to enjoy it as much as possible with the vehicle, because it's a very playful vehicle,
and we really have fun with it.
We all have connections because we aim for the same goal, that is, to finish the test
and to be able to try to overcome the obstacles we face throughout this test,
which is far from easy and simple. So there are these rules,
to always be able to be attentive to help the other and support him when he needs it,
while also measuring his ability to be able to hold on in time
and not use all his cartridges from now on in support.
So there is this respect to be able to listen to the other while also respecting his posture to himself
to be able to go to the end. So that's really a point of anchor in the team, I think.
