It has been a lot in the USA New York has gotten a new mayor How much should one invest in this
No politically speaking you shouldn't put too much into this
I'm trying to come up with a Swedish analogy
A mayoral election in New York is as indicative of national political trends in the U S as a municipal election would be in Kiruna
It is possible to accurately predict who will win several months in advance
There were also a few other elections such as the governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey
It's clear that it was a clean slate so to speak for the Democrats
But then you have to look at this
New Jersey is a blue state and has been since the early 1990s
Virginia has also become increasingly blue
You can see it mainly in the political geography of Virginia what happened
I and with the bureaucracy in Washington D C constantly growing
Then both Virginia and Maryland which D C borders are affected
That's where all the bureaucrats move to live and then commute into Washington D C
This has made both Maryland and northern Virginia very blue
Looking at the election results the Democratic governor's candidate
It would have been hopeless in Virginia if it hadn't been for this blue ribbon
A detailed overview of Washington D C for Fairfax Alexandria and the London area
In addition the state remains deeply red in most places It
was very much anti-Trump effect
The Democrats continue to flow out in unusually large numbers
They vote as much for their own candidates as for assigning the best possible positions
until Trump and the Republicans when they get the chance
Sure it was a bad night for the Republicans but I wouldn't say that
It was a particularly good evening for the Democrats more than just nominally
Or depending on that They got the results everyone
could expect More or less Maybe a few percent extra
There was definitely nothing that stood out to many eyes
After Doge cut down the public administration it is also many
Runtomkring Washington DC bureaucrats who are very
critical of the Republicans when they lose their jobs
It's great that the voter turnout is so high
But Mamdani who has won in New York
The Democrats are portraying him as a new Obama
Republicans almost portray him as a threat to democracy
Who is this person
He is unique in many ways First of all he has not bee
American citizen in your teens He apparently became a citizen here
six to seven years ago He is an immigrant he is a Muslim and he is
A self-appointed socialist This is a combination
that would never win in the United States as a whole
We talked about these blue areas in northern Virginia and southern Maryland
The entire city of New York is super-blue deep blue
If you look at it I was actually surprised in a way
He got just over 50%
The other voices were split between two A Republican and a Cuomo
This was the Democrat who ran as an independent
If this had been a regular mayoral election in New York the
The Democratic frontrunner easily
got maybe 60- 65 or even 70% now Cuomo just took some of that
This was a narrow victory but not a significant one in that way
Even in New York a Muslim socialist whose parents are also so is
Anti-American views and dislike for their new homeland
It wouldn't go home Maybe in the blue areas of Illinois and
California Chicago or San Francisco He could also be elected
It's like a municipal election in Kiruna where people choose between
different shades of socialism more or less since decades back
You can't dream the rest of the head from New York
It is more non-American than Stockholm is non-Swedish
Ten times more
In a mayoral election in New York Democrats usually get more votes
What makes Democrats hesitant to cast their vote for Mandani
He is so far to the left that even many more traditional ones
The Democrats could not vote for him
What makes this more interesting to me as a political scientist is that this is
A natural development The Democrats have been slowly but surely in power for over a hundred years
It has been moving to the left and much faster in the last twenty years
So that's why these kinds of things started coming up After all he's not the first either
You have Alexandra and Taizé and Cortés You have Bernie Sanders
You have a majority of members in the house with this league led by AOC
Oh and several local politicians around the U S who are somewhere on the left side
I hate the Swedish left-wing party If one now tries to draw an ideological analogy
This is not a traditional democrat They are outspoken socialists
So this is a relatively new type of American politician
And they only go home in these deepest blue areas
Blue in the US is the color of the left So this is interesting
It was somewhat expected but at the same time one shouldn't draw entirely too many conclusions
Switching gears here Just a year ago Kamala Harris she's not at all
Like as far to the left as Mandami and AOC and Bernie Sanders
But she is closer to this new wing than the old one
She clearly lost the country as a whole
So you should just have this clear Those who think this is the beginning of the end
For the Trump era itself they are deceiving themselves For this is as stated one
This is like trying to judge Sweden's political development based on a local election
I Kiruna or something like that It's simply not possible
He advocates for high taxes on the absolutely wealthiest people in New York
The absolute richest in the world What could this have for consequences
The consequences have already begun People and companies have already started
Move it away It's even a saying I saw it online and it's eve
Is there talk about the New York Stock Exchange moving to Philadelphia
For they are unsure if they want to stay in New York with such a mayor
If it happens now I don't think it will but if it does then it would be
The most symbolic thing that can be imagined is that the stock market flees a pseudo-communist so to speak
It's just that one shouldn't forget that even though New York and Manhattan are among the mos
Liberal areas After all there are still 20-30% Republicans living in New York
Many of them had already started moving out during the pandemic because New York had gone completely crazy
I hate these kinds of strict shutdowns and stuff They moved here to Florida
It began moving to Texas and other Republican states
This has continued the taxes have become so many and the governments so harsh
These are the bluest states such as New York and California
It's already a mass exodus and for New York's
part this just added fuel to the fire so to speak
Tax increases in Norway led to a massive capital flight
Mandani has also been heavily criticized by people who don't think he is doing enough
Much distance from fundamentalist Muslims and Sharia laws
How do you view that criticism
Yes it's also very intricate and interesting for a large minority in New York
And they have been around for a very very long time you know the Jews
It's really strange that they have been some of the
democratic party's biggest supporters and donors
So how this will work out over time
again as a political scientist one just rubs one's hands together
This is going to be really interesting
How bad it will be for New York as a city and a place to live we'll just have to see
It usually can go
When people like these gain political power they usually
The results tend to show up quite quickly because they
are so convinced of their own ideological infallibility
so that when they start implementing it and it doesn't work
Instead of changing direction they tend to
just keep going the same way
So the breakdown usually comes quite soon
The first one we have seen in Cuba we have seen it in Venezuela
In practice all socialist countries
France even as late as the early 1980s
When François Mitterrand was elected to introduce some form of
democratic socialism which is what they are talking about here
It only lasted for a couple of years
Then he had to change direction as well
Mandamin has a four-year term
I wouldn't take it as completely as at the end that he doesn't put the period out
For this
I mean honestly if the Swede could just get rid of his prejudices
e Republican Party and the American right in
general and Trump in particular for a second
This could mean state-run food stores in practice
The world outside North Korea I think hasn't seen anything
like it since the days of the Soviet Union and we know how that ended
So this is going to be a mess that will go down in history
I'm completely convinced of that
You compare New York with Cuba and Venezuela
How radical is the policy and how bad can it get
Yes I can't swear exactly how radical a person Mandy is
It's a big difference here now because New York will remain
thank goodness for those who live there part of the USA
We have the American Constitution when it comes to property
rights and free competition and such things are obvious
So I think at the very least the entire Manhattan
administration will end up spending a lot of time in court
For private individuals and sole proprietors it will start to go to court
As soon as he begins to implement his more radical ideas
That could take years for things like that to get through
Now we'll see in a way this becomes interesting and ironic
Now the cutting is done in a way for the Democrats have used
Liberal judges and courts have done as much as they possibly could against
the Trump administration since January and did so during Trump's first term
So now I think this is going to be a repeat so to speak on the right side
Conservative judges and courts that actually have the American Constitutio
And its free rights will seriously enter into this
And as they say it will be a sensational mess for us
journalists and political scientists who will have a lot to talk about
When comparing Cuba and Venezuela
how far left does Mandana really want New York to go
He's not I mean I don't call him in
to Fidel Castro or Victor Chavez or something like that
At the very least even if he has such parts and opinions deep inside the iron bark
So New York is still part of the USA
So even if he tried to introduce or abolish things that are guaranteed
private ownership or something like that
He's talked about freezing rents and taking over housing and such
Oh that's exactly what I mean even if and
when he tries to do it it will end up in court
For the American Constitution it is clear when it comes to things like
private property rights freedom of speech free competition and such things
The U S Constitution is supreme over all state and local legislation
So if he starts enforcing rules and such in New York that go agains
Freedom and rights in the constitution will be abolished faster than quick
We'll just have to see how he reacts to it
Whether he accepts it or continues to push
You never really know with people like that He's
a radical He's a true radical We shouldn't forget that
So it remains to be seen in what respect he will have respect for the judicial system
They also come from a Middle Eastern culture which adds another layer to it
For them they usually don't have much cultural understanding of the West
Judicial process and legal tradition are on top of it
But we'll just have to see where it ends up
Washington has been in a shutdown for a long time It is finally over
What can be said about it What have they agreed on
This limited decision that reopened everything here
It was just a typical political compromise
The big losers are obviously the Democrats in general and Senate leader Chuck Schumer
I'm guilty It's even about me talking about him being called and resigning now
Everyone was talking about it It was just that the Democrats put everything on the line
To get the budget passed it was required that the Trump administration would reinstate
In practice free healthcare for millions of illegal immigrants
They didn't get it through They passed a few small things and a senseless vote at the end
These eight Democrats eventually gave up and realized that we cannot continue like this
The whole country is coming to a stop The economy has started to be affected and things like that
Eight Democratic senators ultimately stepped away from their own party
and passed the budget This is as stated a major victory for the Republicans
A parliamentary giant A table for the democrats
We talked earlier about the local regional elections that took place last week
The Democrats gained some momentum from their national-level victories
And another better image as we start to win elections again so the air largely left that balloon
A week later depending on this For this was a major defeat
Some say it could lead to a leadership change among the Democrats in the Senate
We have only seen the beginning of the outcome of this
The summer election is not far away It is next year
What direction do you think the Democrats are heading
If you're Danny you should see it as some kind of direction for the entire party
Or is it unique to New York What do the Democrats look like after losing the election to Trump
The question here is this: what happened last week and what is happening this week
It must be weighed in here In the hours following the mandate and other victory last week
So the Democrats have taken it out of the hole They win again and again
Such radical candidates in New York that they are not electable anywhere else
It was already a messy situation there Then came this political scandal
or whatever one might call it In practice the democratic party split
I saw eight members simply switch sides on this issue
The party has not fallen apart but it is currently stuck
Should they now appoint a new chairman for the Democrats in the Senate
It will take weeks and months Ahead of next year's mid-term election
So it is impossible to say where the democratic party is headed right now
The current strength and generational relationships suggest that it is
This more hardline left wing that will leave here with victory
They are the most They have many prominent faces
They are youthful They have these number of wins now that they can point to
and look we can win with these On the other hand the bulk of
From the Democratic Party in the rest of the country outside these deep
blue areas like New York and Northern Virginia They have realized that this
It's going too far They can't win in Illinois Kansas Florida Texas
Even large parts of California are not worth winning outside the major cities
This is now a power struggle between middle-aged to older more established individuals
Centrist democrats and young agitators far to the left as
They are skilled on social media and are visible Who will win this power struggle
It remains to be seen The numbers speak for the left wing On the other hand
Survival and popularity are what all politicians ultimately want
The more centrist faction has better arguments If you want to recycle
We cannot go this far if the House of Representatives and the majority in Congress are against it
Turn left Who will win remains to be seen
