King Charles VII of Naples commissioned the Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy in 1752 with the specific goal of creating a royal residence that would rival the grandeur of Versailles in France. It took 93 years to complete the Palace, from the laying of the first stone in 1752 until its final completion in 1845, during the reign of Ferdinand II of Bourbon. Work on the Throne Hall itself, a symbol of the grandeur and power, which was the last room to be finished, started much later, in 1811.
