Half a century before Marie Antoinette's time, another beautiful woman set the tone in Paris: the Marquise de Pompadour. Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson became the mistress of King Louis XV in 1745. Despite being a commoner — the daughter of a butcher and wife of a tax collector's nephew — she surpassed most of the noble ladies of France in terms of education and taste. As well as the paintings of Boucher, fashion and Rococo knick-knacks, it was above all music that enchanted her. Many composers of the time dedicated works to her, including the harpsichord and grand opera master Jean-Philippe Rameau.
Rameau wrote cheerful comédie-ballets for the Pompadour, including – how fitting – Les surprises de l’Amour (The Surprises of Love). Under her patronage, he published his Pièces de Clavecin en Concert. Originally published in 1741, he reprinted them twice during the Pompadour era because they reflected the spirit of the times so well.
The title might lead one to assume that these are harpsichord concertos. In reality, however, they are trios in which the harpsichord is accompanied by a violin and a viola da gamba. In our version of the fifth concert, the harp replaces the harpsichord and the cello replaces the viola da gamba.
