The Gnossiennes are a series of piano compositions by the late 19th-century French composer Erik Satie. The pieces are largely in free time, lacking time signatures or bar divisions, and are highly experimental in terms of form, rhythm, and chordal structure. Satie invented the form, but the term itself existed in French literature before his usage of it.

The etymology of the word 'Gnossienne' is contentious, but it existed in French literature prior to Satie's usage and is included in the 1865 Larousse dictionary. It refers to the ritual labyrinth dance created by Theseus to celebrate his victory over the Minotaur, as described in the 'Hymn to Delos' by Callimachus.

Another explanation is that the word appears to derive from gnosis. Satie was involved in Gnostic sects and movements when he began composing the Gnossiennes.

This tree leaf was filmed in the Swiss Alps, quite far from civilisation. However, the mountains were bleak and not interesting enough for filming, so it is sometimes difficult to see an opportunity to film something. Here, I found the movement of the tree branches and the water droplets on the leaf interesting. The video was shot by Simone Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
