China Made Itself a Joke with the New SpaceX Starship Raptor 3's Copycat…Elon Musk laugh!
It is a familiar story whenever we talk about China, not only in the aerospace industry but in many other fields as well.
And as we know, imitation does not always lead to success.
This has once again been made clear by the latest engine unveiled by a Chinese company, which appears to be a direct copy of SpaceX’s Raptor 3.
At first glance, it looks remarkably similar, but beneath the surface lie several major issues. One might even wonder if they are making a joke of themselves.
So, how exactly did China attempt to copy SpaceX’s Raptor 3 engine, and why is it being called a failure?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

It can be said that at this point, I have lost count of how many Chinese copies of SpaceX technology exist. The number is enormous, showing how deeply the imitation strategy has been applied. However, as we have seen many times before, not every clone is a success. The latest example is the new Raptor 3 copy engine from Jiuzhou Yunjian, or JZYJ for short.
Jiuzhou Yunjian, which translates to “China Cloud Arrow,” was founded in 2017. It is a private company, though not as well-known as competitors such as Landspace, Space Pioneer, or CAS Space, because it does not yet have an active launch vehicle. So far, the company has focused on the research and development of a single engine—and that engine happens to be the SpaceX imitation we are discussing today.

This new engine is called the FY-100. It is fueled by liquid methane and liquid oxygen and operates using a full-flow staged combustion cycle. These features are identical to SpaceX’s Raptor engines. The similarities do not end there. The engine’s appearance also follows the same design philosophy of simplicity that SpaceX adopted with Raptor 3. Instead of showing a maze of small external components like traditional rocket engines, the FY-100 has a cleaner, unified structure. According to SpaceX, this simplified form in Raptor 3 was achieved by eliminating smaller subsystems or integrating them into larger, more efficient assemblies.
Even the placement of the oxygen pump, methane pump, hot gas manifold, and preburners is nearly identical to the Raptor layout. Perhaps the only clear difference is in color: the FY-100 is a shiny silver-gray, while the Raptor 3 carries a sleek matte black finish.
