I found out you were a little bit of a WWE fan.
Yeah.
Is John Cena still...
He is.
He's still your favorite?
He's so worth the hype.
He's the best.
I love him.
I really love him.
Even though we can't see him.
Yeah.
Even though you can't see him.
How do I get invited to a party like this?
Oh, man.
Stick in town, kid.
This is Hollywood.
That's all it takes?
No.
I mean, I...
Or come to a Damien Chazelle set.
Okay.
Because being at that party, like you see it on screen, I mean, that's kind of how it
felt.
It was the roaring 20s then.
It's the 20s now.
I know.
It doesn't feel as roaring, perhaps, though.
I don't know.
No.
Not quite the same.
No.
I love this idea in the movie that people may not last forever, but once it's on film,
your performance lasts forever.
I think that's a pretty magical thing.
Yeah.
I love that line.
Yeah.
Jean Smart has this beautiful scene at the end with Brad, and they talk about exactly
that, and she says, you know, you'll die and stuff, but you'll die and you'll go through
So it's so beautiful.
Do you remember what the moment was for you?
When you wanted to become an actor?
When I wanted to become an actor?
Honestly, I was doing Boom Operations, the boom operator, and an actor didn't show up,
and the director asked me, like, would you do this small role?
And I felt like, okay, this could be fun.
And I just kept doing it and doing it, and now I'm here, sitting with my son.
That's a very manly story.
Just like the movie.
Very argumentating life.
I mean that's crazy.
I love this other line in the film that the movie sets the most magical place on earth.
And I've had the great fortune of being on a few movie sets and it's true.
It is true.
What is it that's so magical about a movie set?
I don't know.
Maybe it's the fact that we're adults and we're all playing make-believe on such a huge scale
and it feels like we just have this system to be able to keep playing for the rest of our lives.
Yeah, like freedom.
You can breathe freedom there.
Everything can happen.
Yeah.
Anything's possible.
I love this scene where your character is crying on command.
Yeah.
Repeatedly?
Yeah.
How?
How do you do this?
I can cry on command.
Seriously you can?
Yeah, pretty much.
Wow.
And like Nellie says, oh I just think of home.
What is it that you think of?
I just think of something sad.
Damien asked me that too.
He was like, what do you think of when you think of something sad?
Like how sad are we talking about?
Family dying.
Oh, that's awful.
Yeah, but it works.
So these are actual tears you were crying?
Yeah.
I also, if I have to do a lot of crying, I kind of get, I try to not sleep a lot the days leading up to it.
The more tired I am, the easier it is to cry.
You know when you're really tired and you're just kind of on the brink of tears and you're really, really over-tired?
So yeah, I just get like two, three hours sleep for three days leading up to it and then I can drive to cry.
Oh, that's it.
It's just that easy.
Yeah.
Give it a try.
Think of something sad and don't sleep.
And don't sleep.
That is such a simple step.
I want to take notes.
I also worked on a soap for three years, so I practiced the crying thing.
What do you think is something you'll take from working with Damien that you'll bring with you to every other set that you work on now?
The concentration.
Like he's just the hardest worker on set sometimes and he puts you into the next level.
He makes me do or find things on me that I didn't know that I had.
So that kind of just hard worker kind of situation, I think that's something that I try to keep with me.
Yeah.
And that relentless pursuit of perfection.
It doesn't have to be perfection in that it's perfect.
It's that it's got to be better than you ever imagined.
And if it's not that, you haven't got the take yet.
But not on a Damien Chazelle set.
You will go again and again and again until you've gotten it better and better and more and exciting.
And yeah, you never know when it's going to be his version of perfection, but you give it your all until he says you've got it.
We did our one hour, which was like a two and a half minute one hour, 36 times.
And that's a record for me.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
Well, the film is incredible.
So good to see you guys.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
