What China Did With Rockets Sea Launch Shocked NASA, even Elon Musk SpaceX!
While most of the world has always launched rockets from inland sites or coastal land-based sites, China has taken a bold step that’s turning heads everywhere.
They’re launching rockets from the sea! And not just as a one-time experiment — it’s becoming a full-blown trend.
Meanwhile, SpaceX once had a similar idea, planning to launch its massive Starship from converted oil rigs out in the ocean. But here’s the twist — China’s already doing it, and doing it successfully.
So how did China pull this off so quickly?
What’s driving this trend?
And why is this making even SpaceX take notice?
Let’s break it all down in today’s Techmap episode.

You might’ve noticed something fascinating happening over in China — sea rocket launches are quickly becoming a major trend, and September was a huge month for it.
In early September, China pulled off not one, but two rocket launches in a single day, sending a total of 12 satellites into space.
First up, we had the Smart Dragon 3, launched from a special sea-based platform off the coast of Rizhao, Shandong province. This beast carried 11 multifunction satellites, placing them neatly into a low-Earth orbit about 600 kilometers above our planet. Even cooler, this marked the seventh sea launch for the Smart Dragon 3 series!
But China didn’t stop there. Just six hours later, they fired up a Long March 7A rocket from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center. Its mission? To deploy the Yaogan 45 remote sensing satellite, which will play a big role in scientific research and land resource management.

Fast forward to October — and China’s not slowing down one bit!
They launched yet another rocket, this time a Gravity-1 carrier rocket, from the waters off the coast of Haiyang in Shandong Province. The mission? To place three satellites right into their designated orbits — and it went off without a hitch.
At this point, China has pulled off at least 18 sea-based rocket launches, using four different rocket types — the Long March 11, Smart Dragon 3, Ceres 1, and, of course, Gravity 1.
Most of these launches happen off the Shandong coast and across nearby waters like the Yellow Sea and South China Sea, and that’s no coincidence. Shandong is becoming the heart of China’s sea launch operations.
Right there sits China’s fifth spaceport, the Oriental Maritime Space Port, also known as the Dongfang Spaceport.
