Stumpjumper Evo
Stumpy Evo
Comp,Alloy,LTD,Team,Pro
Horselink
Horselink
Stumpy Evo
Stumpy Evo
Horselink
Ivis
Brian
Brian
Stumpy Evo

Stumpy Evo
Ok, proceed with caution
There's quite a few logs across the trail
Might, most likely, there's guaranteed logs
Yew!
That was a new line, I felt rat
Yew!
I will admit, when we do have the snow days and time off the bike
It does make me look even more forward to getting back onto whatever bike it might be that I am riding at the time
After this ride, I decided it was finally time to throw some volume reducers onto the Stumpy Evo
And we're not cutting that out with the little silky saw
Gonna see what I can do to get some more progression
And I think it's a pretty tiny little yellow volume reducer in here
So let's pop this guy off
So we're coming stock with a 0.2 volume reducer
Let's up the ante a little bit, something bigger
Put a 0.6 because this thing is bottoming pretty easily
Hopefully that helps this bike out a little on the high speed stuff
It's the only place I'm asking for a little bit more
Install these, it's pretty simple
Just slide it around the shaft
Well hello everyone, it's been about a couple weeks since we last checked in about this thing
One's gonna cruise by
Okay, it's been a few weeks since we last checked in
I've been trying to ride the Stumpy Evo
Mother Nature's had other intentions
We got saturated with a solid amount of snow
Enough that my little Subaru was having some tough times
But then it started pouring rain a few days after the single digit temperatures
And that melted all the snow which then soaks the trails horrendously
So things were actually a bit wet here for about a week or so
And I wasn't able to ride the Stumpy Evo
Which was frustrating but here we are
We've had some great rides on it since then
I really like this bike
And ironically when I first tried it
I was beyond stoked at how good it rode in the tight flat technical trails
This bike's rad, it feels way better than I expected
Since then I've gotten in a bigger variety of situations
And I really like a lot of things about this
And there's a few things I'm still struggling with
I got nervous
A little spooked?
Yeah, does not feel intuitive yet
Or riding it
The more I ride it
I am really enjoying it on tight technical slower trails
And when you need to do a lot of body English
It feels great when you're manipulating it
What I am actually kind of struggling with now
Is faster trails and more passive riding
And I think that's more of a geometry thing
I could blame it on suspension
Which lots of mountain bikers do
But in reality suspension on a small bike doesn't really do that much
So it's more geometry
I need to try some of the other setups on here
Like the longer back end, the slacker head angle
I might even try doing a little bit shorter fork
And go down to 160
I'm enjoying it
But I feel like I could enjoy it just a little bit more
Today we came out to one of my favorite local trails
That's more of a flow trail than anything else
There's a bunch of fun jumpy little sections
Kind of bermed out turns
Once in a while you get some roots
But not too many
There's a couple of fun hucker jumps on this trail
That you kind of got to like commit and yank for
Which is sweet
Landing from those bigger jumps
Like 20 feet long or so
I did bottom out front and rear multiple times
I've reset my O-rings a couple of times since then
Those volume reducers I threw in the other day
Made a very noticeable and positive difference
So I went to the 0.6 volume reducer in the rear shock
I really like it
I might even try going a little bit bigger than the 0.6
Which is pretty big already
For the fork I'm running two of those purple tokens
I might go to a third before I drop the travel down
I did have a thought
So I've always thought that geometry matters the most
And suspension matters more on like an e-bike
Or a motorcycle or a car
Than on a lightweight trail bike
But I did have a thought
That more high-speed compression damping
Front and rear would help
It would help keep things more composed at higher speeds
And keep me from bottoming and all that
So I think it's a balance between
Volume reducer, high-speed compression
Too much compression
It starts to feel like you're riding on a wet blanket
Getting pulled across the sand
Not enough
And it feels also really sketchy
So you got to play that balance
Flicks a rebound on the fork
I'm gonna add a little bit of rebound damping
Things feeling okay
But I could use a little more control at high speed
First time I've said that in a while
Probably try that
The stock rear shock
Does not have adjustable high-speed compression
I don't even think it has
Adjustable low-speed compression
I might try a different shock on here
I like the X2 shock
I think it's a great platform
But it'd be sweet to have
Just like 15% more high-speed compression damping
In back in particular
Up front
I love that grip damper on the Z1's
It's been totally fine
But for some reason on this bike
I'm kind of looking for more damping than normal
I've got it clocked at 50% right now
Which is way more than I did on the last Z1 Air
I was riding on my HD5 a few years ago
Minor details though
Out of the box
If this is my only bike for the rest of my life
I would have a lot of fun on it
So I really like the way the FSR feels
When you're pushing into the bike
When you're pumping through turns
When you're trying to bonk off of little roots
And do little manuals and stuff
For me it's pretty predictable
And it makes it easy to handle the bike in that
Now the downside is
Faster sections of trail
So I mentioned how
I'm kind of struggling a little
On the trails getting faster
I notice it's not
Absolutely blowing me away
On the faster bits of trail
I remember when I first started working at Ibis
Did my first ride on that Mojo
That through the stutter bumps
It felt noticeably quicker
Than my Enduro did
Now once again
I'm going the other direction
I'm noticing
That I'm getting a little more hung up in the rough
With the old FSR
So the solution
Is to be more active
Do more jumps
Do more
Use what it's good at
To your advantage
Because it's better
Getting off the ground
Than a DW link
So yeah
That's been interesting
To experiment with
I filmed a bunch of manuals
On this thing today
Because this bike
Is so fun to wheelie with
I really like that back end
It's not too short
It's predictable
The way I've got
The volume reducers in there
I feel like I can just
Jam that back end
Wherever I need it
And it responds really nicely
Other details
Torsional frame stiffness
Feels really good
And appropriate
It feels stiffer than my Ritmo AF
Torsionally
Which is cool
Small bump sensitivity
Is pretty good
Feels plusher than my Ritmo AF
A little bit
Not that much of a difference
Pedaling uphill
It doesn't feel quite as efficient
As the DW link
But it's not that big of a deal
You would notice
Three pounds more frame weight
Than you would notice
The pedaling performance
Between the two
It's just when things get bumpier
You notice the FSR
Doesn't pedal quite as good
In the bumps
So
It isn't a huge deal
No
There's one manual line here
That I've filmed a handful of times
It's one of my favorite
Manuals, wheelies of all time
Today we tried filming it
From a different vantage point
And we did this crazy manual
Which looks like no big deal
In the video
There's like a 200 foot cliff
To my side
And it's like a few inches
From the trail
So I just kind of lean left
And don't fall off of it
And that's the secret for that
And then you get a little jump
To slap down manual
And yeah, this thing's intuitive
I was able to nail it
Every single time
And it felt great
So I'm happy with the volume reduction
I did front and rear
I'm looking forward to trying
The different rear end positions
I'm looking forward to trying
Different head tube angles
I might try swapping tires
But if I go to shorter forks
Slacker head tube angle
It's going to drop it a little bit
So I might go to some 2.6 WTB tires
I know they're not the cool kid tires
But I really like those 2.6
Tough casing tires
Especially in places like the desert
Wherever it's loose
Almost over cleared my jump
Don't want to do that
Alright, with that
Big thanks to Riley
For cruising out and filming
Thanks to all of you for watching
I'll link to the Stumpy Evo
Over at Jensen USA
They're on close out sale right now
I don't know exactly how many
They have left
But when they're gone, they're gone
I did make sure to get
The common man color
I see these on almost every ride here
And now I blend in
I love it
You won't even recognize me
If you see me wheelie by
So yeah, it's been a super fun bike
I need to learn more of the details
You can learn them at that Jensen link down below
Anything you buy from those Jensen links
Will help support my channel
Big thanks to Jensen, Industry 9
And to all of you for tuning in
With that, it's time to do some wheelies
Get home, get my kiddo from school
I'll see you guys in the comments down below
Peace
