Above the earth is a secret layer of purple, swirling stardust.
It looks like a blanket of blackcurrant juice that's full of small, sparkling lights
that dance and swirl like fairies. It only appears at night time on the full moon,
when everyone has gone to bed. It only lasts for a moment, then it disappears again.
But even though it isn't visible all the time, it's always there.
Inside this blanket of purple are all the bedtime wishes that children make
before they fall asleep. And every night they're collected by the moon rabbit.
He takes them to the moon to sort out the good wishes from the bad wishes.
Then he releases the good ones safely into the universe, like a big, gentle sigh.
He must do it before the night turns to day, because the wishes can't be granted in sunlight.
But one night, not so long ago, something strange happened.
In a small town, a special wish that glittered with pink light and green sparkles was floating
out of an open window. She drifted gently in the warm summer air. She was a good wish,
and she had come from a lovely little girl who was wishing for her grandmother to feel better.
As she drifted up and up, she tingled slightly with excitement.
She was looking forward to seeing the moon rabbit.
The wish kept floating upwards like a feather caught on a gentle breeze.
She breathed in the clean air and felt peaceful. Below her, the small town was moving further
and further away. The houses looked like square cakes from up there.
The trees looked like green cotton wool, and the roads looked like wriggling pieces of string.
Up and up the wish floated. She saw great flowing rivers running across the land.
She saw patchwork fields of crops. She even saw the gentle edge of the deep blue sea
as it lapped against the shore. The higher the wish floated, the more peaceful and safe she felt.
Eventually, the wish was so high that she could see almost all of the earth,
stretching and curving against space. The air up here was cool and peaceful.
The night sky was inky and deep. The wish kept on floating and felt the air change.
It became lighter and clearer. Gradually, it turned more and more purple.
Then, with a tiny pop, the wish broke out of the night sky and entered the secret blanket
of stardust. Everything was bathed in a deep purple color. The wish's sparkles began to twinkle
brighter and brighter. She looked around her to see other wishes popping into the secret blanket.
They drifted lazily and happily around, their own twinkles sparkling and dancing.
Soon, there were hundreds and hundreds of wishes, all swirling and sighing,
waiting to be taken to the moon. The wish gazed out ahead of her.
Beyond the blanket was the blackness of space. Stars were dotted everywhere,
like a great splatter of white paint. And right in the middle was the big, milky, full moon.
The wish took an extra deep breath in and felt herself tingle with happiness.
But the moon rabbit was nowhere to be seen. The wish wondered if she had arrived too early.
But no more wishes were arriving. All the wishes seemed to be wondering the same thing.
They began to whisper to their neighbors. Then, a thought drifted into the wish's mind.
Perhaps the moon rabbit had got lost. Maybe he needed help.
The wish looked back out into space and felt sure that her idea was right.
The wish wanted to be granted and knew that she only had until the end of the night to do it.
So, the wish took a deep breath. Then, she glided smoothly to the edge of the blanket
and passed through it. She hadn't expected space to feel so relaxing.
It was like sinking into a warm bath. The wish floated away from the special blanket
and further into space. By this time, the other wishes were all watching.
They twinkled and sparkled. Then, another wish with blue sparkles broke out of the blanket.
And another with yellow twinkles. The two new wishes joined the first one.
Together, they gently sparkled, telling each other that it was time to find the moon rabbit.
They drifted silently through space. They passed stars of every color that looked like
great sequins sewn into a dark piece of cloth. But they couldn't see the moon rabbit.
Then, they floated amongst a meteor shower. The meteors rained down, glowing orange and bright.
But they couldn't see the moon rabbit. They carried on towards the moon.
The bigness of space stretched out all around them, and they shivered in amazement.
Their twinkles sparkled and shone. Then, the chalky surface of the moon came closer.
They could see every crater and big rock. But they couldn't see the moon rabbit.
The wish had another thought. Perhaps the moon rabbit wasn't out here in space after all.
It seemed like the other wishes had the same thought.
Together, they turned and glided back to the blanket of stardust.
The wishes inside the secret blanket sparkled and twinkled excitedly.
They thought that the moon rabbit had been found. But when they realized that he was still missing,
their lights became dull and small. Back inside the blanket, the wish sighed.
She thought she would find the moon rabbit. But she hadn't.
Soon, the night would be over, and the wish would never be granted.
As she sighed again, she looked down towards the earth. And there was an amazing sight.
On a wide stretch of desert was a gigantic, pure silver rabbit. It was the moon rabbit.
The wish glowed very bright and rushed to the bottom of the blanket.
She popped out and began moving back down towards earth.
The other wishes saw what was happening and followed her.
As she drifted towards the desert, more and more wishes began to join her.
They could see the moon rabbit getting closer and closer.
Then, they saw the moon rabbit's great silver ear twitch.
He turned his beautiful head up to the sky. The sparkling wishes were reflected in his black,
shiny eyes. He smiled and laughed with joy.
Hello, wishes, he said. You came back for me.
The wish circled around the moon rabbit's head. She twinkled with happiness.
The moon rabbit cleaned his whiskers and explained what had happened.
You see, everyone who made bedtime wishes had forgotten to thank the moon rabbit for all his
hard work. Without their thanks, he couldn't perform his magic. So instead, he fell off the
And now, he couldn't get back up. The wish listened carefully.
Then, she looked up at the wishes still twinkling in the blanket above the earth
and all the wishes around her. Another idea came to her.
She began to twinkle to the other wishes, telling them what to do.
Then, she floated over to the moon rabbit. She stopped by his soft, fluffy tail.
The other wishes joined her. Above them, the wishes in the blanket broke through
and rushed down to the moon rabbit. They positioned themselves all around him.
Then, the wish thought with all her might,
Thank you. She began to glow blue and lilac. Then, the other wishes did the same.
They also began to glow blue and lilac. And as they touched the moon rabbit's fur,
he began to glow too. His ears quivered happily and he started to rise off of the desert floor.
The wish glowed brighter and brighter. Her plan was working.
The moon rabbit laughed a tinkling laugh. They were taking him back to the moon.
Soon, the moon rabbit was gliding through the night air, up towards space.
They climbed higher and higher, up through the clouds.
The moon rabbit used his front paws to help them swim through the air.
But the morning light began to spill over the earth.
The wishes and the moon rabbit moved faster and faster.
They passed straight through the secret blanket and into space.
The moon rabbit became light and bright. He pulled them towards the moon,
his whiskers wobbling with excitement. The wishes knew that their job was done.
And they held onto the moon rabbit as he landed.
On the moon, the moon rabbit thanked all the wishes for their help.
He told them it was time for the good wishes to be released into the universe.
And any bad wishes or sad wishes were transformed into moonstones.
They fell gently onto the surface of the moon, where they still live now.
They are peaceful and sleeping. The moon rabbit took a great breath
and breathed in all the good wishes. The wish went with them. She was happy and relieved.
Then the moon rabbit let out a huge sigh and the wish was released out into the universe.
Thank you, she thought, as she joined all the other good wishes ready to be granted.
They spread like glittering dust into the bigness of space.
Back on Earth, the morning was bright and light. The lovely little girl, who had made a bedtime
wish, looked out of her window at the pale blue sky. There was a gentle knock at the door.
It was her mother. She told the girl that her grandmother felt better today.
The girl looked back at the sky and smiled. Her wish had come true.
