In this Toccata in G minor – recorded here for All of Bach with Maud Gratton – the young Bach experiments with the stylus phantasticus: an imaginative and fanciful way of composing that was full of surprises, and popular with forerunners of Bach. The Toccata in G minor begins and ends with great flair, with an enormous gesture that embraces nearly the whole keyboard. In between, Bach places four varied movements: a sarabande-like Adagio, an Allegro with the annotations forte and piano, a slow lyrical movement, and a strict four-part fugue that still manages to surprise.
